The northern part of the South Virgin Mountains is within the transition zone between the Basin and Range Province and the High Plateaus of the Colorado Plateau. Sedimentary formations in the Paleozoic are represented by more than 6,800 feet of carbonate and elastic sediments. Ordovician rocks are thought to be present, but are not confirmed. Rocks of Silurian age are absent from the area. Triassic and Jurassic units, the Moenkopi Formation, Chinle Formation and the Aztec Sandstone, have a composite thickness of more than 3,700 feet. There are elastic and minor carbonate rocks, all of continental origin, that are of …

Criteria For The Determination Of Flow Direction In Volcanic Rocks, Eugene Irwin Smith Oct 1967

Criteria For The Determination Of Flow Direction In Volcanic Rocks, Eugene Irwin Smith

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A statistical method employing the Tukey Chi-square test and the vector method was used for determining the direction of primary flow lineation in volcanic rocks. Oriented samples were collected from the McCartys Basalt, the porphyritic andesite of Mount Taylor and the Bandelier and Battleship Rock Rhyolite Tuffs of the Jemez Mountains. All these localities are in New Mexico. Measurements were taken of the elongate particles in each horizontal thin section. The flow lineation direction in each slide was determined statistically by computing values of vector mean or chi-square orientation. The McCartys flow samples showed the lowest reliability. This was probably …

A Pre- And Post-Improvement Study On Six Southeast Kansas Strip-Mine Lakes, William Thomas Waller

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

During the last sixty years extensive experimental research has been conducted in an attempt to establish methods of controlling the acid conditions resulting from coal mine operations.

It was the purpose of this research to determine the feasibility of reclaiming acid strip-mine lakes for use as potential fisheries management areas. To accomplish the objectives outlined above a two-phase program was initiated. The first phase involved the physical alteration of the drainage areas of the experimental lakes included in this study in an attempt to divert all visible signs of acid drainage to areas other than those incorporated into the drainage …

Experiments On The Inactivation Of Zinc By The Mineral Fractions Of The Soil, John J. Hassett May 1967

Experiments On The Inactivation Of Zinc By The Mineral Fractions Of The Soil, John J. Hassett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Zinc deficiency, in many cases, is closely related to organic matter decomposition. DeRemer and Smith (1964) studied the effects of decomposing sugar beet tops on the reactions of Zn65 in a Portneuf soil. They found that with time the Zn65 associated with lime minerals, exchangeable, and water soluble fractions of the soil decreased, while that found with the organic and mineral fractions increased. This increase in the mineral fraction is of particular interest, since the majority of the Zn65 was found to be with this fraction after a period of time. They also showed that the increase …

Movement Of Atrazine In Soil Under Furrow Irrigation, Jyothi Veerabhadrappa May 1967

Movement Of Atrazine In Soil Under Furrow Irrigation, Jyothi Veerabhadrappa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Movement of atrazine in response to furrow irrigations was studied using the samples of Timpanogos silt loam soil. Distribution in soil profile of surface applied herbicide was determined by drawing samples of water extracts through porous cylinders. Atrazine quantity was determined by spectrophotometer.

It was observed that the herbicide found in the water extracts was an indication of the quantity present in the soil. The herbicide moved readily with the applied water. Irreversible thermodynamic model could not be applied because of the initial and final boundary conditions. The pattern of movement was in conformity with the chromatographic theory.

Doctoral Dissertations

"Current terminology in the field of lineaments and linears (lineations) analysis was reviewed and quantitative definitions of the common terms offered. A general classification of lineations is herein proposed. Characteristics of drainage and airphoto lineations were reviewed and the procedure used in their analysis discussed.

An area about 1880 square miles was analyzed for lineations based on drainage networks and the resulting patterns showed preferred orientation. These drainage lineations were later compared with the airphoto lineations of the same area and a limited degree of similarity was observed.

The airphoto lineations of an area approximately 7000 sq. mi. covering the …

Relationship Of Pleochroism And Specific Refractivity Of Cupric Compounds To Cupric Ion Coordination., Pilsum Phiroze Master Jan 1967

Relationship Of Pleochroism And Specific Refractivity Of Cupric Compounds To Cupric Ion Coordination., Pilsum Phiroze Master

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The ion has a 6-fold coordination. The CU-polyhedron is distorted due to the Jahn-Teller effect. There is, hence, varying polarizability in each Cu-polyhedron. Also since the nature (and size) of the ligands in each Cu-polyhedron varies, the polarizability varies from one Cu-polyhedron to the next.

Light waves passing through the Cu-polyhedra cause electron polarization. Conversely the polarizing action of light waves upon the atoms is accompanied by a reaction of the atom upon the light waves. Hence, absorption of light energy is directly proportional to polarizability. This thesis demonstrates this relationship by:

l) Showing that the projection of the square-planar …

Estimation Of Regional Trends In Gravity Using Gram Orthogonal Polynomials, Stanley Dean Thompson Jan 1967

Estimation Of Regional Trends In Gravity Using Gram Orthogonal Polynomials, Stanley Dean Thompson

Masters Theses

"A computer program is presented which estimates the trend in a rectangular array of gravity measurements. It is assumed that the regional trend of gravity may be estimated by a low-order polynomial. The method of least-squares is applied to solve for the low-order polynomial which best approximates this trend. Gram orthogonal polynomials are used in the solution of this least-squares surface fit. The program is tested on a known polynomial and on some hypothetical Bouguer gravity data and found to approximate the ʺregional trend of gravity in these cases. The importance of eliminating any significant noise in the observations before …

A Subsurface Geologic Study Of Petroleum Possibilities In The Pennsylvanian Rocks Of Concho County, Texas, Gregory Paul Kraus Jan 1967

A Subsurface Geologic Study Of Petroleum Possibilities In The Pennsylvanian Rocks Of Concho County, Texas, Gregory Paul Kraus

Masters Theses

"During early Pennsylvanian time the area now occupied by Concho County was a portion of the Texas peninsula, a broad, low arch with a karst topography developing on its exposed Ellenburger surface. A mid-Pennsylvanian marine transgression inundated the arch and it became an area of clear, shallow water deposition favorable to limestone development. Local sedimentation during Strawn time was largely controlled by its position relative to the Llano uplift and surrounding basins. A variety of subsurface maps were constructed for this study essentially utilizing electric log data. The results indicate that limestones of the Strawn platform facies rapidly change in …

Recent Fluvial Geology In Western North Dakota, Thomas M. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Lee Clayton and approved by Walter L. Moore -and John R. Reid as members of the examining connnittee, of which Mr. Clayton was chairman.

In western North Dakota many drainage channels that are incised into valley fill are characterized by steep, unvegetated sides. Many such channels contain actively eroding scarps. The origin of these scarps is most frequently related to increased water velocity causing accelerated erosion on a steepened reach of the valley flat.

The principal mechanism of scarp migration is soilfall which is initiated by undercutting of the scarp …
