Magnetic Exploration Of The Crescent Formation, Washington: The Search For A Hidden Fault Near Dusk Point, Samuel G. Furmanski

Summer Research

The mafic rocks of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, are part of an accreted terrane known as Siletzia which experienced transpressional stresses as far as 50 Ma ago in the early Eocene. The Peninsula has an accretion-thrust marine sedimentary interior and a mafic volcanic periphery juxtaposed along the Hurricane Ridge fault; a terrane-scale thrust fault. The mafic Crescent Formation (CF) can be subdivided into two units: The Lower Crescent member (LC) and the Upper Crescent member (UC) as defined by Tabor and Cady (1978). The LC consists of submarine basalt flows that have composition similar to mid-oceanic ridges with zircon fission-track …

Assessing the potential for black carbon (BC) and dust deposition to reduce albedo and accelerate glacier melt is of interest in Washington because snow and glacier melt are an important source of water resources, and glaciers are retreating. In August 2012 on Snow Dome, Mount Olympus, Washington, we measured snow surface spectral albedo and collected surface snow samples and a 7 m ice core. The snow and ice samples were analyzed for iron (Fe, used as a dust proxy) via inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry, total impurity content gravimetrically, BC using a single-particle soot photometer (SP2), and charcoal …

Using Paleomagnetism To Unravel The Mysteries Of The Summit Creek Basalts, Glynis Bawden

Summer Research

The Summit Creek Basalts are a sequence of steeply dipping subaerial late Eocene basaltic flows located southeast of Washington’s Mount Rainier. Despite previous petrologic and paleomagnetic investigations, the origins of these basalts are poorly understood. It is uncertain whether they erupted in situ or were transported to their present location by tectonic processes. It is possible that these lavas were derived from the same magma source as a sequence of flows in the Crescent Formation on the Olympic Peninsula, as both erupted between 45 and 50 million years ago and have similar chemical compositions. Cypress Island, Washington is composed of three distinct rock units separated by two major faults with east-west trending surface traces. The rock units are from south to north; an ultramafic unit with varyingly serpentinized harzburgite, a volcanic/ sedimentary unit composed of basalt, numerous pelagic sediments and serpentine, and a greywacke unit. The orientations of the fault contacts at depth are not interpretable by surface data. This study compiled magnetic data from several sources to model subsurface geologic aspects of the island. Magnetic anomaly profiles were created from the data, then analyzed and modeled using the computer program GM-SYS. The primary …

Major volcanoes of the Southern Washington Cascades (SWC) include the large Quaternary stratovolcanoes of Mount St. Helens (MSH) and Mount Adams (MA) and the Indian Heaven (IH) and Simcoe Mountain (SIM) volcanic fields. There are significant differences among these volcanic centers in terms of their composition and evolutionary history. The stratovolcanoes consist largely of andesitic to dacitic lavas and pyroclastics with minor basalt flows. IH consists dominantly of basaltic with minor andesite lavas, all erupted from monogenetic rift and cinder cone vents. SIM has a poorly exposed andesite to rhyolite core but mainly consists of basaltic lavas erupted from numerous …
