Late Eocene To Early Oligocene Palynostratigraphy Of The Western Black Sea, Easternparatethys, Recep Hayretti̇n Sancay, Zühtü Bati

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Eastern Thrace and Western Black Sea basins provide unique perspectives on the palaeogeographic reconstructions of the Paratethys. Although very thick and extensive Oligocene outcrops and well sections exist in the Thrace Basin, only a few comparable sections are available in the Black Sea onshore areas. In this study, five measured stratigraphic sections of Eocene to Oligocene age from the margins of the Western Black Sea were studied and palynomorph assemblages were identified quantitatively. Index dinoflagellate cyst events and a palynological biozonation as established in the Mediterranean were applied successfully. Priabonian units contain the Aal biozone, whereas Rupelian successions were …

The sedimentary basins in SW Turkey (e.g., Kale-Tavas, Yatağan, and Ören basins) that developed after the closure of the Neotethys Ocean allow the reconstruction of the tectonic and paleogeographic history of the region. Due to the rich coal reserves, the Yatağan Basin provides a substantial amount of data to infer the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate during the middle Miocene to Pleistocene. Our work provides new paleontological and radiometric data to constrain the age, paleoclimate, and depositional environment of terrestrial deposits of this basin. We present fossil findings such as mammal bones, gastropods, and palynomorph assemblages from the base of the Turgut …

Palaeontological Evidence And Sedimentary Facies In A Lower Miocene (Aquitanian) Succession From The Bingöl Minibasin (Sivas Basin), Central Anatolia, Mehmet Serkan Akki̇raz, Özgen Kangal, Nazi̇re Özgen Erdem, Yeşi̇m Büyükmeri̇ç, Ci̇han Doğruöz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The results of palaeontological (palynological and mollusc) and sedimentological analyses of the lower Miocene deposits from the Bingöl minibasin, a part of the Sivas Basin, are exhibited to define the vertical shifts in sedimentation environments and plant covers, linking to eustasy. The presence of index species Corbulomya (Lentidium) aquitanica suggests an Aquitanian age for the studied succession, which can be divided into three informal units: a lower unit, a middle unit, and an upper unit. Fine-grained sediments of the lower unit were deposited in a low sea-level setting due to high quantities of terrestrial palynomorphs. This unit is overlain by …

Petrography And Palynology Of Late Oligocene And Middle Miocene Coals In The Gelibolu Peninsula, Nw Turkey, Ferdi̇ Demi̇rtaş, Mustafa Bozcu, Erdal Koşun, Mehmet Serkan Akki̇raz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this study, coal samples from two different coal zones located close to each other were examined. They occur in the Late Oligocene Osmancık and Miocene Gazhanedere formations in the Gelibolu peninsula, in the SW part of the Thrace Basin (NW Turkey). This paper focuses on the organic-petrographic composition and depositional conditions of the two coal zones by using coal petrography, including maceral ratios, and palynology. The maceral composition of the Oligocene coal samples is similar to that of the Miocene coal samples. The coal samples from both locations are characterized by a high content of huminite group macerals, ranging …

Miocene Palynoflora Of The Kocaçay And Cumaovası Basins: A Contribution To The Synthesis Of Miocene Palynology, Palaeoclimate, And Palaeovegetation In Western Turkey, Mi̇ne Sezgül Kayseri̇ Özer, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r, Funda Akgün Jan 2014

Miocene Palynoflora Of The Kocaçay And Cumaovası Basins: A Contribution To The Synthesis Of Miocene Palynology, Palaeoclimate, And Palaeovegetation In Western Turkey, Mi̇ne Sezgül Kayseri̇ Özer, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r, Funda Akgün

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Palynofloras of the Kocaçay and Cumaovası basins in western Turkey that belong to a time-span from the late Early to late Middle Miocene (the late Burdigalian-Serravallian) are studied and compared with published palynofloras of Europe and Turkey. Palynological data and numerical climatic results obtained by the coexistence approach indicate palaeoclimate changed from warm subtropical to temperate during the late Burdigalian-Serravallian. Moreover, the palaeoclimates of the Kocaçay and Cumaovası basins are compared with continental palaeoclimatic records of coal-bearing sediments in western Turkey and current temperatures in the İzmir region. According to this comparison, palaeoclimatic results of these basins and other localities …

Palaeoflora And Climate Of Lignite-Bearing Lower−Middle Miocene Sediments In The Seyitömer And Tunçbilek Sub-Basins, Kütahya Province, Northwest Turkey, Mehmet Serkan Akki̇raz, Funda Akgün, Torsten Utescher, Volker Wilde, Angela Anneliese Bruch, Volker Mosbrugger, Sari̇ye Duygu Üçbaş Jan 2012

Palaeoflora And Climate Of Lignite-Bearing Lower−Middle Miocene Sediments In The Seyitömer And Tunçbilek Sub-Basins, Kütahya Province, Northwest Turkey, Mehmet Serkan Akki̇raz, Funda Akgün, Torsten Utescher, Volker Wilde, Angela Anneliese Bruch, Volker Mosbrugger, Sari̇ye Duygu Üçbaş

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Lower-Middle Miocene successions from Kütahya province (Seyitömer and Tunçbilek sub-basins) were analyzed to reconstruct the palaeoclimate and vegetation of the period. A rich coniferous forest formed the dominant components among sporomorphs and consisted mainly of undeterminable Pinaceae, Pinus haploxylon type, Pinus diploxylon type, Picea, Cedrus, Cathaya, Keteleeria and Podocarpus. Pollen data also indicate the presence of some fern taxa (Osmunda, Polypodiaceae, Schizeaceae) Selaginella and Lycopodium. Cupressaceae frequently occur in all samples from both sub-basins, and form part of the mixed forest assemblage. Two woody plants Castanea-Castanopsis and evergreen Quercus predominate in the assemblages as well. The reconstruction of palaeoclimate is …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The integration of sedimentological, palynological and palaeontological data in three different outcrops in SW Turkey provides a clearer understanding of the palaeoenvironments in an area between the Çardak-Dazkırı Basin and the Isparta region during the Middle-Late Eocene. In this study, the Çardak-Dazkırı (Başçeşme Formation), Burdur (Varsakyayla Formation) and Isparta (Kayıköy Formation) areas have been studied for facies and facies associations. These formations contain alluvial fan, fan delta, shelf and related marine deposits. Detailed field observations allowed 34 lithofacies and 10 facies associations to be identified. The palynomorph assemblages in the Başçeşme and Varsakyayla formations contain biostratigraphically important taxa such as …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

A profile 63 m thick in the Late Miocene in the Gotse-Dechev Basin (SW Bulgaria) was sampled for pollen analysis in the Kanina opencast mine. The exposed sequence comprises a basal unit with brown coal-clay cycles and clayey/siliciclastic cover layers partly representing a lacustrine facies. A total of 60 pollen samples were analysed, but quantitative data are confined to 30 polleniferous samples. The palynological analysis carried out provides data about the composition and structure of the fossil vegetation. The main vegetation type was a mixed mesophytic forest dominated by Carya, Fagus, Betula, Quercus, and Ulmus. Accessory elements included Magnolia, Corylopsis, …

Sporomorph association B is described from the Çorum region and Sivas Basin and is of early-middle Serravalian age. Sporomorph association C is described from the Sivas-Vasıltepe region and is of earliest Tortonian age. Sporomorph association A indicates warm subtropical climatic conditions and the Coexistence Approach (CA) results are: mean annual temperature (MAT) 19 °C, mean annual coldest month (CMT) 9.75 °C, mean …

Biostratigraphic Data (Mammalia And Palynology) From The Upper Miocene İncesu Formation At Düzyayla (Hafik-Sivas, Central Anatolia), Funda Akgün, Tanju Kaya, Ann Forsten, Zeki̇ Atalay Jan 2000

Biostratigraphic Data (Mammalia And Palynology) From The Upper Miocene İncesu Formation At Düzyayla (Hafik-Sivas, Central Anatolia), Funda Akgün, Tanju Kaya, Ann Forsten, Zeki̇ Atalay

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Upper Miocene İncesu formation, widely exposed in Düzyayla (Hafik-Sivas), consists of mudstones, conglomerates, lacustrine limestones and lignite. The İncesu formation overlies the gypsiferous Hafik formation of controversial Middle Miocene or Oligocene ages. The mammalian fauna of the lignite horizon includes Hipparion sp., Ceratotherium neumayri (Osborn), Deinotherium giganteum Kaup, Choerolophodon pentelici (Gaudry & Lartet), Adcrocuta cf. eximia (Roth & Wagner), Oioceros wegneri Andree, Helladotherium duvernoyi Gaudry & Lartet and Microstonyx erymanthius (Roth & Wagner), which indicate a Turolian (Late Miocene) age. The palynological assemblage of the lignite is apparently represented by 27 genera and 39 species. Four genera and four …
