"Iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits are poorly understood mineral systems. For example, we do not know why Cu- and Co-rich IOCG deposits typically occur proximal to Fe ore deposits that are notably Cu and Co-poor, such as Iron Oxide Apatite (IOA) deposits. To better understand the formation of IOA and IOCG deposits in Missouri, USA, this PhD thesis examines the genesis of the Kratz Spring IOA and the Boss Central Dome IOCG deposits. This study presents the first constraints on formation conditions and fluid sources in the studied deposits using integrated petrographic, mineral composition, and Fe isotope analyses of oxide minerals. "Hydrofracturing (fracking), a common practice in the Petroleum Industry to induce or improve fluid flow in tight formations, creates chemical disequilibrium that further alters the porosity and permeability of host rocks and results in the production of saline and contaminated produced waters (PW). The PW of the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) are Na-Ca-Mg-K-Cl brines with mean concentrations of approximately 16% Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and circumneutral pH. Analysis of composition suggests the PW result from a 20 to 80% dilution of formation waters (relict brines of the Louann Salt) by fracking fluid. "The unique alignment of the Decaturville, Crooked Creek, and Weaubleau geological structures in central Missouri, three of nine known such structures along the 38th parallel in Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas, has puzzled geoscientists for decades. Research using palynology (palynomorphs and particulate organic matter) and radiometric dating of impact spherules were used to constrain age and a relationship between these enigmatic structures and infer their paleoenvironmental conditions. Novel melting damages, unique to impact, were documented in the palynomorphs in all the three structures. Early Ordovician acritarchs with melted processes correlate with 40Ar-39Ar stepwise heating age of impact spherules …

"Holocene hydroclimate reconstructions have contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms controlling precipitation in Central America. Recent hydroclimate proxy records from the region, however, have revealed considerable spatiotemporal complexity in precipitation variability. This complexity is hypothesized to result from the interaction between multiple oceanic-atmospheric processes that converge in the region. This project analyzed three sediment cores from Lake Izabal, eastern lowland Guatemala, with the goal of understanding changes in precipitation, lake productivity, and lake water chemistry during the Holocene. "Azimuthal anisotropy quantified by teleseismic SKS, SKKS, PKS (“XKS”) and local S wave splitting parameters is used to investigate lithospheric deformation and asthenospheric flow beneath the boundary zone of the North American and Caribbean plates and adjacent areas. A total of 4915 XKS and 1202 pairs of local S wave splitting parameters were obtained at 24 broad band seismic stations. The XKS observations can be divided into two groups based on the spatial distribution of the resulting fast polarization orientations. "The overall objective of this study is to interpret the depositional conditions of lacustrine carbonate deposits of the lower Permian Lucaogou low-order cycle in the greater Turpan-Junggar continental rift basin, NW China. The depositional environments of ten carbonate lithofacies in the Tarlong-Taodonggou half graben and the Zhaobishan section were interpreted. Allo- and autogenic factors were identified. They controlled characteristics and distribution pattern of carbonate deposits in regional and local scale, respectively. "Numerous geophysical studies suggest that seismic anisotropy is a nearly ubiquitous property of the Earth’s crust and upper mantle. In this study, we utilize the shear wave splitting technique to investigate the piercing-point-dependent azimuthal anisotropy beneath the northeastern edge of the Sichuan Basin in central China, and the spatial and temporal variations of anisotropy near the 2019 M7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake in California, respectively. “Previous studies have noted the relationship between shallow groundwater rich in sodium (Na) and bicarbonate (HCO3) and elevated levels of dissolved arsenic. However, most experimental work on arsenic adsorption in the presence of HCO3 and differing Na/Ca ratios has proven difficult to extrapolate to natural systems because of differences in tested mineral compositions and component concentrations. “The Southeast Missouri Iron Metallogenic Province in the Midwestern USA contains seven major and several minor IOA/IOCG-type deposits, all of which are spatially associated with the early Mesoproterozoic (1.50-1.44 Ga) magmatism in the St. Francois Mountains terrane. This Ph.D. project focuses on the Pilot Knob deposits, i.e., the deeper largely massive Pilot Knob Magnetite (PKM) and the shallower Pilot Knob Hematite (PKH) deposits, and the Shepherd Mountain deposit that are located less than 2.1 km distance from one another. "Paleolimnological evidence indicates the ancient Maya transformed lowland terrestrial ecosystems by felling forest vegetation to construct large civic-ceremonial centers and expand agriculture. The effects of prehistoric Maya land alterations on lake trophic status, however, remain poorly understood. We analyzed a 515-cm-long sediment core from Lake Petén Itzá, lowland Guatemala, to infer paleoenvironmental changes resulting from Maya occupation of the riparian archaeological site of Nixtun-Ch'ich'. "Marine palynomorphs, mainly dinoflagellate cysts and acritarchs, constitute excellent proxies for biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic studies in neritic sequences. Neogene marine palynological studies have mostly focused on the Northern Hemisphere, resulting in the scarcity of dinoflagellate cysts and acritarchs from tropical latitudes. Forty samples encompassing the late Chattian-late Burgidalian time interval (~24.1- 17.3 Ma) in the Southern Caribbean were analyzed for their marine palynological contents. “Alkaline Ultramafic Carbonatite (AUC) complexes, although rare, are valued for diamonds and REEs, and as windows into subcontinental and mantle processes as recorded by rock fabrics, mineral spatial relationships, and mineral compositions. We report specifically on olivine and phlogopite petrographic relationships and compositions from the Devonian alnoite diatreme-facies of the Avon Alkaline Igneous Province, Missouri. The diatreme alnoite is a mixture of domains of olivine magmaclasts (OM) set in a crystal-rich melilite matrix. OM are highly fractured, serpentinized olivine pseudomorphs with variable amounts of pristine olivine fragments. "In spite of numerous geophysical investigations have been conducted in southeastern United States, the structure and evolution of the crust and lithospheric mantle remain controversial due the thick sedimentary covers atop the crust of the coastal plains there. In this study, we use data from 186 broadband seismic stations belonging to the USArray Transportable Array to construct a 3-D shear wave velocity model for the southeastern United States for the top 180 km by a joint inversion of Rayleigh wave phase velocity dispersion and receiver functions. "To discern spatial and explore the possible existence of temporal variations of upper crustal anisotropy along an ~15 km section of the San Jacinto Fault Zone (SJFZ) in California, and in the Fairview, Oklahoma, region, we conduct systematic shear wave splitting (SWS) investigations using local S-wave data recorded by seismic stations. Strong spatial variations in crustal anisotropy are revealed by 1694 and 405 pairs of splitting parameters (including the fast polarization orientation and the splitting time), respectively. "Seismic attenuation is an important physical parameter for characterizing subsurface morphology and the thermal structure of the Earth’s crust and mantle. In this study, teleseismic P-wave amplitude spectra are used to examine the seismic attenuation beneath the southeastern United States and the Malawi and Luangwa rift zones in east African. The resulting seismic attenuation parameters (Δt*) reveal a systematic contrast between the Appalachian Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain exhibiting high and low attenuation, respectively. ”The Polochic-Motagua Fault System in Guatemala is the on-land segment of the sinistral transform plate boundary between the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate. Three major seismically active strike-slip faults in this fault system pose significant earthquake threats to surrounding populated cities. The assessment of seismic hazard requires a better understanding of the kinematics of the fault system. ”Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and satellite imagery have become the most utilized remote sensing technologies for compiling inventories of surficial geologic conditions. Point cloud data obtained from multi-spectral remote sensing methods provide a detailed characterization of the surface features, in particular, the detailed surface manifestations of underlying geologic structures. When combined, point clouds eliminate bias from visual inconsistencies and/or statistical values. “This research aims to mitigate eutrophication of freshwater habitats affected by urban stormwater runoff. Two highly impacted urban ponds near the Missouri S&T campus in Rolla were the focus of this research on the application of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs). An FTW consists of a man-made floating mat that is planted with emergent or floating macrophytes. The plants grow on the mat and their roots extend into the water column below the mat. “This study investigates the major, minor, and trace element compositions of minerals from a series of meteorites which represent different stages of planetary evolution including two sample from Mars (ALHA 77005 and NWA 7397), one sample from Vesta (NWA 5480), and one ordinary chondrite (Ausson). The goal of this study is to investigate if petrogenetic tracers commonly employed to understand terrestrial samples can also be applied to extraterrestrial samples.
