Before 1973, movement of the Ross Ice Shelf had been measured near the Transantarctic Mountains (Swithinbank, 1963), near Ross Island (Stuart and Heine, 1961) and near the ice front and to the south of Roosevelt Island (Dorrer et at., 1969). Robin (1975), assuming steady state, extrapolated these data across the ice shelf by applying volume conservation principles to measured ice thickness profiles of the ice shelf.

Weathering Stages Of A Tholeiitic Basalt (Dolerite), Queen Maud Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski
Earth Science Faculty Scholarship
The sparsity of datable material and key horizons throughout most of the Transantarctic Mountains requires that much of the mapping and correlation of glacial deposits, especially moraines, be based primarily on qualitative techniques. One qualitative method is to characterize the degree of weathering of clasts covering these deposits (Behling, 1971; Calkin, 1971; Nichols, 1971; and Mayewski, 1975). Lacking, however, is a detailed understanding of the role and method of weathering. To help solve this problem, soil studies have been made by Claridge and Campbell (1968) in the Shackleton Glacier region and Everett and Behling (1968), Linkletter (1972), Behling (1971), and …

Geophysical Approaches To Coal Exploration, Gerald B. Rupert
Geophysical Approaches To Coal Exploration, Gerald B. Rupert
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
The exploration for minerals by geophysical means has been confined largely to the search for hydrocarbons and metallics while applications to coal exploration are somewhat limited. However, the surface reflection seismic technique has been successfully applied not only to delineating coal deposits but also as a tool in mine exploitation. Furthermore, channel waves generated underground have demonstrated potential in detecting the presence of faults in advance of the coal face and Vibroisis* experiments have been conducted whereby abandoned underground workings have been detected by surface seismic arrays. Examples of all of the preceeding are presented and discussed.

Properties Of Soils In The Solid Set Irrigation Area Of The Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory, David T. Lewis
Properties Of Soils In The Solid Set Irrigation Area Of The Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory, David T. Lewis
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
The introduction of irrigated agriculture and the attendant increase in intensity of land use for agricultural purposes in the Sandhills region of Nebraska requires additional data regarding soils in the area. This work investigated landscape relationships and some of the morphological, physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of the soil in one irrigated valley. The soils in this valley contain greater amounts of silt and clay than do the soils on the nearby dunes. In addition, some of the valley soils contain layers of much higher clay content and corresponding cation exchange and water holding capacity than the dunal soils and …

"On behalf of the Oombulgurri Community, we invite assistance in developing the grain and pasture cropping at Oombulgurri. We have experimented with peanuts, sorghum, and many varieties of vegetables. This has tested the reality of hopes to expand acreage and varieties to become self-sufficient in stock feed. The Farm and Garden Guild now needs the expertise of your services to plan a four-year programme. vie need assistance in choosing from the many options, opinions and advices available from Australia and elsewhere, for grain production, pastures, methods appropriate to …
Statistical Models For Precipitation, Z. Govindarajulu, Peter Purdue, Frank Cioch
Statistical Models For Precipitation, Z. Govindarajulu, Peter Purdue, Frank Cioch
KWRRI Research Reports
The available data consists of daily rainfall for the past 24 years (1948-1972) for Lexington, Louisville and Paducah. However, for Ashland, the data is available for the period of 40 years (1932-1972). The problem is to find an appropriate family of distributions indexed by a suitable number of parameters that fits the maximum daily rainfall. Further, there might be seasonal variations. The following seasons were considered: (i) Dry Convective season: August 1-0ctober 30; (ii) Early Convective season: May 1-July 31; (iii) Late Convective season: November 1- April 30. After extracting the yearly maximums for each of these seasons (see Appendix …

Final Report - Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon
Final Report - Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon
Publications (WR)
The Lake Mead monitoring program has developed a substantial body of information on the physical, chemical and biological limnology of Lake Mead since 1972. This report summarizes pertinent aspects of that data, with emphasis on studies completed in 1975 -76. It is our continuing hope that the data developed by us will be useful to an ever broader group of users of the water resource represented by Lake Mead. We have been privileged to see our data have a significant influence in some very important water resource decisions over the past four years. There is every reason to expect that …

Hydrodynamic Separation Of Solids From Solid-Liquid Mixtures, Harry J. Sterling Jr., Don J. Wood
Hydrodynamic Separation Of Solids From Solid-Liquid Mixtures, Harry J. Sterling Jr., Don J. Wood
KWRRI Research Reports
Several schemes for separating solid pollutants from water flowing in a closed conduit were examined. Separation based on the momentum differential between the solids and liquids and the centrifugal movement of a conveying liquid were both examined under turbulent flow conditions. The study indicated these processes to have limited applications, primarily due to the difficulties in withdrawing a significant fraction of separated flow and the deleterious effects of turbulent mixing. However, utilization of the differential momentum of solid particles and water when flowing laminarly through a pipe was found to be a viable separation scheme. Significant experimental separations (greater than …
The Lower Reaches Of Long Creek, Kentucky: A Karst Anomaly In Allen County, Doral Conner
The Lower Reaches Of Long Creek, Kentucky: A Karst Anomaly In Allen County, Doral Conner
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A field study of the lower reaches of the Long Creek drainage area in southeastern Allen County, Kentucky, established the karst character of that area. The area heretofore had been described as a non-karst area. Four swallow holes, which individually or collectively totally pirate Long Creek, were identified. Two major resurgences of the pirated flow were located and described. A detailed study of a portion of the Long Creek drainage area revealed thirty-four springs, all of which were pirated at least once, and no flow from these springs reached Long Creek by surficial routes. The field survey also revealed dolines …

Laws, Rules, And Regulations Pertaining To Groundwater In Nebraska, Gerald R. Svoboda
Conservation and Survey Division
This publication contains (1) Nebraska laws pertaining to groundwater, and (2) the duties assigned to or the rules and regulations developed by various Nebraska agencies charged with the regulation of groundwater use. Following public hearings, rules and regulations can be changed at any time by state agencies. Each state agency with responsibility for groundwater regulation is able to supply, upon request, its rules and regulations pertaining to groundwater use. Water legislation varies from state to state because of differences in climate, availability and utilization of water, and fundamental legal concepts inherited at the time of statehood. Some states have laws …
Distribution Of Carbonate In Surface Sediments Of The Pacific Ocean, W. H. Berger, Charles Adelseck, Larry A. Mayer
Distribution Of Carbonate In Surface Sediments Of The Pacific Ocean, W. H. Berger, Charles Adelseck, Larry A. Mayer
Affiliate Scholarship
The distribution of carbonate on the floor of the Pacific has been remapped on the basis of 1313 points from 80 references stored in the World Ocean Sediment Data Bank of Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Percent distribution maps and carbonate versus depth diagrams generally agree with previously published information and reflect the major controlling factors of carbonate sedimentation (depth, hydrography, fertility, and sedimentary processes). While carbonate distributions are of limited use in attempting to construct dissolution profiles, major trends are identifiable. In particular, the degree of lowering of the equatorial calcite compensation depth (CCD) together with an estimate of the …

Real Estate Agents And Geographical Information, Risa Palm
Real Estate Agents And Geographical Information, Risa Palm
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Real estate agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, were surveyed to ascertain the nature and degree of any geographical bias in their evaluations of urban neighborhoods. Three hypotheses were confirmed: first, that realty companies cover limited portions of the housing market; second, that overall evaluations by realtors correspond to the vacancy pattern; and third, that individual real estate agents have highly localized views of which areas are appropriate for certain types of home buyers. These empirical findings have implications for the viewpoint that the metropolitan area acts as the information frame or 'whole' in which intra-urban migration can be analyzed.
