Geomorphology And Land Use Of A Tropical Wet-Dry Environment Santander, Columbia, Joseph Ray Dec 1975

Geomorphology And Land Use Of A Tropical Wet-Dry Environment Santander, Columbia, Joseph Ray

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study deals with the Holocene environmental dynamics experienced by a seasonally wet-dry landscape of tropical Columbia. In light of a high ecological sensitivity, the study area is also analyzed as the resource of man. This is done by intensive study area reconnaissance, mapping, altimeter survey, and radiocarbon dating of fluvial landforms. Also, samples of soil, pasture, and water were collected for later study, and several interviews were completed with local residents.

The study area is a tropical lowland of northcentral Columbia at about 7 ½° north latitude. A maximum local relief about 600 m is maintained by a rather …

Analysis Of The Sediment Filtering Action Of Grassed Media, Billy J. Barfield, David T. Y. Kao, E. W. Tollner Dec 1975

Analysis Of The Sediment Filtering Action Of Grassed Media, Billy J. Barfield, David T. Y. Kao, E. W. Tollner

KWRRI Research Reports

The movement of sediment in non-submerged flow through a rigid grass media was studied experimentally by simulating the media with cylindrical nails. Models of sediment movement were developed from probablistic reasoning and from the use of existing parameters describing total bed material in open channel flow. In the probability analysis, the percent sediment trapped was found to be a power function of the number of potential fall paths, Nf,a particle could make from the surface to the bed while traveling through the filter media. The percent trapped was also found to be an inverse power function of the …

Chemical Components And Diffusion, John B. Brady Nov 1975

Chemical Components And Diffusion, John B. Brady

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Chemical components for use in the description of a system involved in a diffusion process may be selected according to the same criteria followed in the selection of components for an equilibrium system. The various possible sets of components are not independent and may be interrelated through a component transformation. Actual components are preferred over nonvariable components, since they simplify descriptions and avoid theoretically nonmeasureable quantities. Two systems involved in an interdiffusion process may always be described using components that are actual components of both systems. For example, ternary reciprocal exchange of alkalis be tween alkali feldspars and dioctahedral alkali …

Trace Metals And Major Elements In Water-Soluble Rocks Of Northwest Arkansas, George H. Wagner, Kenneth F. Steele, Doy L. Zachry Jr. Oct 1975

Trace Metals And Major Elements In Water-Soluble Rocks Of Northwest Arkansas, George H. Wagner, Kenneth F. Steele, Doy L. Zachry Jr.

Technical Reports

Trace metals in limestone are potential water contaminants because they can enter the ground water when the limestone is dissolved by carbonic acid and other naturally occurring acids. Four local limestones, the St. Joe and Pitkin Formations (Mississippian) and the Brentwood and Kessler Members of the Bloyd Formation (Pennsylvanian) were sampled in a five county area in Northwest Arkansas. Atomic absorption analyses were made for Na, K, Mg, Ca, Zh, Cu, Ba, Fe, Co, Cr, Ni, Mn, Li and Sr on the acid soluble material of the samples. All the limestones are relatively pure CaCO3 with Pitkin the purest, 93.4%. …

Response Of Saturated Sands To Cyclic Shear At Earthquake Amplitudes, Vincent P. Drnevich, John P. Jent Oct 1975

Response Of Saturated Sands To Cyclic Shear At Earthquake Amplitudes, Vincent P. Drnevich, John P. Jent

KWRRI Research Reports

Both quasi-static and resonant cyclic shear tests were performed on hollow cylindrical specimens of saturated sands at various densities and confining stresses. Shear moduli measured at nondestructive amplitudes were shown to be independent of frequency for the range of 0.1Hz to 50Hz. Application of cyclic shear at larger amplitudes caused effective stresses to decrease and failure. The number of cycles to failure was related to ratio of cyclic shear stress to maximum drained shear stress. Effective confining stress reduces approximately linearly with number of cycles. Shear modulus and shear damping.can be described by the Hardin-Drnevich equations if change in effective …

Geochemistry Of The Cenozoic Volcanic Rocks Of Ross Island And Vicinity, Antarctica, S. S. Goldich, S. B. Treves, N. H. Suhr, J. S. Stuckless Jul 1975

Geochemistry Of The Cenozoic Volcanic Rocks Of Ross Island And Vicinity, Antarctica, S. S. Goldich, S. B. Treves, N. H. Suhr, J. S. Stuckless

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Cenozoic volcanic rocks of Ross Island and vicinity, Antarctica, are surface flows, tuffs, breccias, and small intrusives. The prominent rock is basanitoid. Alkali-basalt magma reached the surface over an appreciable length of time and was differentiated to produce a rock series: basanitoid → trachybasalt → phonolite. The alkalic, silica-undersaturated rocks are part of a larger petrologic province composed of volcanic centers in a belt nearly 2,000 km long roughly parallel to the Transantarctic Mountains. Two trends of magmatic differentiation are apparent. At depth the fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, and opaque oxide minerals, all of which are abundant as …

Glacial Geologic Investigation Of Upper Rennick Glacier Region, Northern Victoria Land, Paul Andrew Mayewski

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

The 1974-1975 field season was spent investigating the upper Rennick Glacier area (figure) for (1) the relationship between the glacial history of the study area and the glacial histories already defined for more southerly sectors of the Transantarctic Mountains, (2) the history and dimensions of former fluctuations of the east antarctic ice sheet, Rennick Glacier, and its tributaries, as recorded in glacial deposits, and (3) the significance of this area in paleoclimatic reconstructions of Antarctica and the world.

The inexperienced gemstone collector may sometimes think of Nebraska as being a place Mother Natural forgot. Mother Nature, however, may be enjoying a little chuckle at the many gem collectors who drive right through Nebraska on their way to more exotic gem fields.

Climatic factors, feedlot runoff, and organic material in the runoff were evaluated in experimental and commercial feedlots. The effects of slope, stocking rates, terraces, basins, and holding ponds were evaluated to obtain the best controls for containing runoff. In eastern Nebraska, 70 cm annual precipitation produces 23 cm of runoff; whereas, in northeastern Colorado, 37 cm annual precipitation gives only 5.5 cm of runoff. Large applications of runoff liquid, up to 91 cmon grass-Ladino and 76 cm on corn, in Nebraska did not decrease yields; however, in northeastern Colorado, the concentrated high-salt runoff required dilution before direct application to crops. …

Microfossils From The Big Springs Limestone (Pennsylvanian) In Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Sand-sized residues from partial acetic acid digestion of three samples of the Big Springs Limestone Member of the Lecompton Limestone (Pennsylvanian) from two localities in Cass County, Nebraska, have yielded sixteen genera of microfossils from five major groups of organisms and numerous other whole and partial fossils from seven other groups not identified to the genus level. These fossils include: Protozoa (fusulinids*); Porifera (one spicule type); Bryozoa (two undetermined genera); Brachiopoda (fragments); Gastropoda (two undetermined forms); Ostracoda (Bairdia*, Hollinella*, Moorites*, and one undetermined genus); Crinoidea (whole and partial ossicles*); Echinoidea (whole and partial spines and spine bases*); Holothuroidea (Achistrum …
