Cancer Risk Prediction With Whole Exome Sequencing And Machine Learning, Abdulrhman Fahad M Aljouie Dec 2019

Cancer Risk Prediction With Whole Exome Sequencing And Machine Learning, Abdulrhman Fahad M Aljouie

Dissertations

Accurate cancer risk and survival time prediction are important problems in personalized medicine, where disease diagnosis and prognosis are tuned to individuals based on their genetic material. Cancer risk prediction provides an informed decision about making regular screening that helps to detect disease at the early stage and therefore increases the probability of successful treatments. Cancer risk prediction is a challenging problem. Lifestyle, environment, family history, and genetic predisposition are some factors that influence the disease onset. Cancer risk prediction based on predisposing genetic variants has been studied extensively. Most studies have examined the predictive ability of variants in known …

Machine Learning Classification Of Primary Tissue Origin Of Cancer From Dna Methylation Markers, Sravani Gannavarapu Surya Naga

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally and was responsible for approximately 9.6 million deaths in 2018. One of the main reason for deaths from cancer is late-stage presentation and inaccessible diagnosis and treatment. Cancer often spreads from the part of the body where it started (primary site) to a different part of the body (metastatic site). Identifying the primary site of cancer plays a key role as it directs the appropriate treatment. Cancer which spreads needs the same treatment as its origin. Having this knowledge can help doctors to decide the type of treatment.

All cancers …

Simulating An Immune Response With A Combined Agent-Based Model Of A Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Tumor And Vascular Network, Michael J. Ventoso Jan 2019

Simulating An Immune Response With A Combined Agent-Based Model Of A Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Tumor And Vascular Network, Michael J. Ventoso

Senior Projects Fall 2019

Cytotoxic T-cells (CTLs) are one mechanism the immune system employs to eliminate cancer cells. In this study, I expand upon a previous 3-dimmensional agent-based model of triple-negative breast cancer to include a therapy simulating an immune response in the form of a CTL insertion into the tumor. The model consists of the tumor, comprised of progenitor cells, cancer stem cells, and tumor-associated macrophages, as well as an expanding vascular network. I investigate the effects of inserting different amounts of CTLs into the space, and their effect on tumor size in the short and longer terms. The results show that while …

Microarray Data Analysis And Classification Of Cancers, Grant Gates Jan 2019

Microarray Data Analysis And Classification Of Cancers, Grant Gates

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

When it comes to cancer, there is no standardized approach for identifying new cancer classes nor is there a standardized approach for assigning cancer tumors to existing classes. These two ideas are known as class discovery and class prediction. For a cancer patient to receive proper treatment, it is important that the type of cancer be accurately identified. For my Senior Honors Project, I would like to use this opportunity to research a topic in bioinformatics. Bioinformatics incorporates a few different subjects into one including biology, computer science and statistics. An intricate method for class discovery and class prediction is …
