Fuzzy Reasoning Procedure For Ontologies Based On Rough Membership Approximation, Armand Florentin Donfack Kana, Babatunde Opeoluwa Akinkunmi

Future Computing and Informatics Journal

One of the major challenges in modeling a real-world domain is how to effectively represent uncertain and incomplete knowledge of that domain. Several techniques for representing uncertainty in ontologies have been proposed with some of the techniques lacking provision for vague inference. The classical tableaux-based algorithm does not provide the flexibility for reasoning over such vague ontologies. However, several extensions of the tableaux-based algorithm have been proposed to cope with fuzzy reasoning. Similarly, several alternative reasoning methods for incomplete, inconsistent, and uncertain ontologies have been proposed. One of the major limitations of most of those techniques is that they require …

Ontologies For Geospatial Information: Progress And Challenges Ahead, Christophe Claramunt

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Over the past 50 years or so the representation of spatial information within computerized systems has been widely addressed and developed in order to provide suitable data manipulation, analysis, and visualisation mechanisms. The range of applications is unlimited and nowadays impacts almost all sciences and practices. However, current conceptualisations and numerical representations of geospatial information still require the development of richer abstract models that match the complexity of spatial and temporal information. Geospatial ontologies are promising modelling alternatives that might favour the implementation and sharing of geographical information. The objective of this vision paper is to provide a short introduction …

Spatial Knowledge Representation Model Of Simulation Scenario Based On Ontology, Zhu Jie, Hongjun Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Military simulation scenario has abundant spatial knowledge and is closely related to various models of combat simulation. In view of the lack of uniform specification for the description of simulation scenario knowledge, it is necessary to construct a spatial knowledge representation model in line with spatial thinking to effectively analyze the spatial entities and their interrelationships in simulation scenario. The ontology method is used to establish spatial knowledge domain ontology and form the formal description specification of spatial knowledge concept; the spatial knowledge structure is described hierarchically by using the method of concept knowledge tree, clarifying the semantic logic …

Agent-Based Semantic Role Mining For Intelligent Access Control In Multi-Domain Collaborative Applications Of Smart Cities, Rubina Ghazal, Ahmad Kamran Malik, Basit Raza, Nauman Qadeer, Nafees Qamar, Sajal Bhatia

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Significance and popularity of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is inevitable; however, its application is highly challenging in multi-domain collaborative smart city environments. The reason is its limitations in adapting the dynamically changing information of users, tasks, access policies and resources in such applications. It also does not incorporate semantically meaningful business roles, which could have a diverse impact upon access decisions in such multi-domain collaborative business environments. We propose an Intelligent Role-based Access Control (I-RBAC) model that uses intelligent software agents for achieving intelligent access control in such highly dynamic multi-domain environments. The novelty of this model lies in using …

Ontology Based Devs Modeling Method, Rong Gang, Xiao Jun, Yunping Hu, Yiping Feng

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In the field of modeling and simulation, it’s difficult to reuse the models because the models and simulation system are coupled seriously. The Ontology-driven modeling theory is a simulation modeling methodology for model reuse. A new DEVS modeling method was proposed based on this theory. The DEVS modeling ontology DEVSMO was built and the DEVS model could be described as the instance of the DEVSMO. This form of DEVS model was independent of the DEVS simulation environment, which improved the model reusability. A tool was developed to translate the DEVSMO instance to DEVS executable models to verify the …

Abstract: In the view of problem in lack of information sharing mechanisms at the semantic level among processes, a business process modeling algorithm based on ontology language using concept hierarchy as background knowledge was proposed. The business process modeling by traditional business process languages can be transferred to ontology language (OWL) description so as to realize the semantic sharing of business process. The approach has two main advantages compared with traditional methods: (1) accelerating the building process, minimizing the conversion cost; (2) background knowledge guides the extraction of knowledge resided in database. As a way of validating the approach, part …

About One Approach To Implementing Semantic Search, Murtadha Rasol, Jamal Challab, Adnan Al-Saeedi Mar 2019

About One Approach To Implementing Semantic Search, Murtadha Rasol, Jamal Challab, Adnan Al-Saeedi

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Traditional search mechanisms are based on the keyword search, which does not consider the semantic links between different concepts. This leads to the loss of relevant documents due to inaccurate query formulation or using contextually close words and concepts in the query. To solve the problems of formulating user queries and interdisciplinarity of concepts, it is suggested to use semantic search. The proposed method for implementing semantic search is applicable to large scopes of text data and is based on using a genetic algorithm. Unlike standard methods for information search, the suggested method allows us to consider the semantics of …

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Area and volume values of buildings and building parts have been used in many applications including taxation, valuation and land use planning. Many countries maintain a national standard for representing the measurements of floor areas in buildings. The national standards generally use similar basis for measuring building floor areas, in fact, areas specified in national standards often have semantic differences. Therefore, a number of international standards have been developed for harmonizing floor area measurements; however, they also have differences. This study aims at harmonizing the floor areas defined in the international property measurement standards by revealing the semantic relations between …

While researchers have attempted to use ontologies to classify the digital forensics domain on various dimensions, no ontology of digital forensic tools …

Semantic Data Storage In Information Systems, Jean Vincent Fonou Dombeu, Raoul Kwuimi May 2018

Semantic Data Storage In Information Systems, Jean Vincent Fonou Dombeu, Raoul Kwuimi

The African Journal of Information Systems

The storage and retrieval of information are important functions of information systems (IS). These IS functions have been realized for decades, due to the maturity of the relational database technology. In recent years, the concept of Semantic Information System (SIS) has emerged as IS in which information is represented with explicit semantic based on its meaning rather than its syntax to enable its automatic and intelligent processing by computers. At present, there is a shortage of discussions on the topic of semantic data storage in IS as compared to the relational database storage counterpart. This study uses a combination of …

Development And Semantic Exploitation Of A Relational Data Model For Service Delivery In South African Municipalities, Kgotatso Desmond Mogotlane, Jean Vincent Fonou Dombeu

The African Journal of Information Systems

Relational databases (RDB) are the main sources of structured data for government institutions and businesses. Since these databases are dependent on autonomous hardware and software they create problems of data integration and interoperability. Solutions have been proposed to convert RDB into ontology to enable their sharing, reuse and integration on the Semantic Web. However, the proposed methods and techniques remain highly technical and there is lack of research that focuses on the empirical application of these methods and techniques in information systems (IS) domains. This study develops and semantically exploits a relational data model of the South African Municipalities Information …

A Context-Sensitive Conceptual Framework For Activity Modeling, Rahul Deb Das, Stephan Winter Jun 2016

A Context-Sensitive Conceptual Framework For Activity Modeling, Rahul Deb Das, Stephan Winter

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Human motion trajectories, however captured, provide a rich spatiotemporal data source for human activity recognition, and the rich literature in motion trajectory analysis provides the tools to bridge the gap between this data and its semantic interpretation. But activity is an ambiguous term across research communities. For example, in urban transport research activities are generally characterized around certain locations assuming the opportunities and resources are present in that location, and traveling happens between these locations for activity participation, i.e., travel is not an activity, rather a mean to overcome spatial constraints. In contrast, in human-computer interaction (HCI) research and in …

Intelligent Text Classification System Based On Self-Administered Ontology, Manoj Manuja, Deepak Garg Jan 2015

Intelligent Text Classification System Based On Self-Administered Ontology, Manoj Manuja, Deepak Garg

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Over the last couple of decades, web classification has gradually transitioned from a syntax- to semantic-centered approach that classifies the text based on domain ontologies. These ontologies are either built manually or populated automatically using machine learning techniques. A prerequisite condition to build such systems is the availability of ontology, which may be either full-fledged domain ontology or a seed ontology that can be enriched automatically. This is a dependency condition for any given semantics-based text classification system. We share the details of a proof of concept of a web classification system that is self-governed in terms of ontology population …

There are many methods having different approaches for assessing similarity and relatedness and they are used in many application areas, including web service discovery, invocation and composition, word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, ontology alignment and merging, document clustering, and short answer grading. These methods can be categorized as path-based, information content-based, feature-based, geometric model-based, and hybrid approaches. These approaches use resources such as concept hierarchy, conceptual graph, and corpus for computing similarity and relatedness. With the rise of the semantic web, ontologies have attracted the attention of several researchers. Ontologies represented in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) are also valuable …

The Semantics Of Similarity In Geographic Information Retrieval, Krzysztof Janowicz, Martin Raubal, Werner Kuhn Oct 2012

The Semantics Of Similarity In Geographic Information Retrieval, Krzysztof Janowicz, Martin Raubal, Werner Kuhn

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Similarity measures have a long tradition in fields such as information retrieval artificial intelligence and cognitive science. Within the last years these measures have been extended and reused to measure semantic similarity; i.e. for comparing meanings rather than syntactic differences. Various measures for spatial applications have been developed but a solid foundation for answering what they measure; how they are best applied in information retrieval; which role contextual information plays; and how similarity values or rankings should be interpreted is still missing. It is therefore difficult to decide which measure should be used for a particular application or to compare …
