Blockchain-Based Public Auditing And Secure Deduplication With Fair Arbitration, Haoran Yuan, Xiaofeng Chen, Jianfeng Wang, Jiaming Yuan, Hongyang Yan, Willy Susilo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data auditing enables data owners to verify the integrity of their sensitive data stored at an untrusted cloud without retrieving them. This feature has been widely adopted by commercial cloud storage. However, the existing approaches still have some drawbacks. On the one hand, the existing schemes have a defect of fair arbitration, i.e., existing auditing schemes lack an effective method to punish the malicious cloud service provider (CSP) and compensate users whose data integrity is destroyed. On the other hand, a CSP may store redundant and repetitive data. These redundant data inevitably increase management overhead and computational cost during the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vehicular social networks (VSNs) have emerged as the promising paradigm of vehicular networks that can improve traffic safety, relieve traffic congestion and even provide comprehensive social services by sharing vehicular sensory data. To selectively share the sensory data with other vehicles in the vicinity and reduce the local storage burden of vehicles, the vehicular sensory data are usually outsourced to vehicle cloud server for sharing and searching. However, existing data sharing systems for VSNs can neither provide secure selective one-to-many data sharing and verifiable data retrieval over encrypted data nor ensure that the integrity of retrieved data. In this paper, …

Crowdsourcing Atop Blockchains, Yuan Lu Aug 2020

Crowdsourcing Atop Blockchains, Yuan Lu

Dissertations

Traditional crowdsourcing systems, such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk), though once acquiring great economic successes, have to fully rely on third-party platforms to serve between the requesters and the workers for basic utilities. These third-parties have to be fully trusted to assist payments, resolve disputes, protect data privacy, manage user authentications, maintain service online, etc. Nevertheless, tremendous real-world incidents indicate how elusive it is to completely trust these platforms in reality, and the reduction of such over-reliance becomes desirable.

In contrast to the arguably vulnerable centralized approaches, a public blockchain is a distributed and transparent global "consensus computer" that is …

Attribute Proxy Re-Encryption For Ciphertext Storage Sharing Scheme On Blockchain, Xiaohong Zhang, Lanlan Sun

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to implement the information storage sharing service safely and efficiently, a blockchain storage sharing scheme supporting the attribute proxy re-encryption and keyword retrieval is proposed. By the nodes classification and ciphertext storage separation, the anti-collusion attack is better implemented. The smart contract design of the information transaction is introduced and the information sharing parties can communicate spontaneously without the participation of the central organization. By the attribute-based proxy re-encryption algorithm, the information owner can share the information with other users without re-encrypting, uploading, and downloading information, and relieves the burden of the high-frequency access of the cloud …

Privacy-Preserving Protocol For Atomic Swap Between Blockchains, Kiran Gurung

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Atomic swap facilitates fair exchange of cryptocurrencies without the need for a trusted authority. It is regarded as one of the prominent technologies for the cryptocurrency ecosystem, helping to realize the idea of a decentralized blockchain introduced by Bitcoin. However, due to the heterogeneity of the cryptocurrency systems, developing efficient and privacy-preserving atomic swap protocols has proven challenging. In this thesis, we propose a generic framework for atomic swap, called PolySwap, that enables fair ex-change of assets between two heterogeneous sets of blockchains. Our construction 1) does not require a trusted third party, 2) preserves the anonymity of the swap …

A Generalized Formal Semantic Framework For Smart Contracts, Jiao Jiao, Shang-Wei Lin, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts can be regarded as one of the most popular blockchain-based applications. The decentralized nature of the blockchain introduces vulnerabilities absent in other programs. Furthermore, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to patch a smart contract after it has been deployed. Therefore, smart contracts must be formally verified before they are deployed on the blockchain to avoid attacks exploiting these vulnerabilities. There is a recent surge of interest in analyzing and verifying smart contracts. While most of the existing works either focus on EVM bytecode or translate Solidity contracts into programs in intermediate languages for analysis and verification, …

Blockchain promises to provide a distributed and decentralized means of trust among untrusted users. However, in recent years, a shift from decentrality to centrality has been observed in the most accepted Blockchain system, i.e., Bitcoin. This shift has motivated researchers to identify the cause of decentrality, quantify decentrality and analyze the impact of decentrality. In this work, we take a holistic approach to identify and quantify decentrality in Blockchain based systems. First, we identify the emergence of centrality in three layers of Blockchain based systems, namely governance layer, network layer and storage layer. Then, we quantify decentrality in these layers …

Transactional Scripts In Contract Stacks, Shaanan Cohney, David A. Hoffman Jan 2020

Transactional Scripts In Contract Stacks, Shaanan Cohney, David A. Hoffman

All Faculty Scholarship

Deals accomplished through software persistently residing on computer networks—sometimes called smart contracts, but better termed transactional scripts—embody a potentially revolutionary contracting innovation. Ours is the first precise account in the legal literature of how such scripts are created, and when they produce errors of legal significance.

Scripts’ most celebrated use case is for transactions operating exclusively on public, permissionless, blockchains: such exchanges eliminate the need for trusted intermediaries and seem to permit parties to commit ex ante to automated performance. But public transactional scripts are costly both to develop and execute, with significant fees imposed for data storage. Worse, bugs …

Secure Blockchains For Cyber-Physical Systems, Matthew Edward Wagner Jan 2020

Secure Blockchains For Cyber-Physical Systems, Matthew Edward Wagner

Doctoral Dissertations

“Blockchains are a data structure used to perform state agreement in a distributed system across an entire network. One unique trait of blockchains is the lack of a centralized trusted third-party to control the system. This prevents a corrupted trusted third party from being able to control the entire blockchain. All nodes can reach agreement in an untrusted network where nodes do not need to trust one another to believe the accuracy of the information stored. Two main issues occur when trying to apply this technology to other applications: verifiability and scalability. In previous blockchain architectures, there is no way …
