Detecting Myocardial Infarctions Using Machine Learning Methods, Aniruddh Mathur Dec 2019

Detecting Myocardial Infarctions Using Machine Learning Methods, Aniruddh Mathur

Master's Projects

Myocardial Infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when one of the three major blood vessels carrying blood to the heart get blocked, causing the death of myocardial (heart) cells. If not treated immediately, MI may cause cardiac arrest, which can ultimately cause death. Risk factors for MI include diabetes, family history, unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Medical treatments include various types of drugs and surgeries which can prove very expensive for patients due to high healthcare costs. Therefore, it is imperative that MI is diagnosed at the right time. Electrocardiography (ECG) is commonly used to detect MI. ECG …

Scatter Reduction By Exploiting Behaviour Of Convolutional Neural Networks In Frequency Domain, Carlos Ivan Jerez Gonzalez Dec 2019

Scatter Reduction By Exploiting Behaviour Of Convolutional Neural Networks In Frequency Domain, Carlos Ivan Jerez Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

In X-ray imaging, scattered radiation can produce a number of artifacts that greatly

undermine the image quality. There are hardware solutions, such as anti-scatter grids.

However, they are costly. A software-based solution is a better option because it is

cheaper and can achieve a higher scatter reduction. Most of the current software-based

approaches are model-based. The main issues with them are the lack of flexibility, expressivity, and the requirement of a model. In consideration of this, we decided to apply

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), since they do not have any of the previously

mentioned issues.

In our approach we split …

Applied Deep Learning In Intelligent Transportation Systems And Embedding Exploration, Xiaoyuan Liang Aug 2019

Applied Deep Learning In Intelligent Transportation Systems And Embedding Exploration, Xiaoyuan Liang

Dissertations

Deep learning techniques have achieved tremendous success in many real applications in recent years and show their great potential in many areas including transportation. Even though transportation becomes increasingly indispensable in people’s daily life, its related problems, such as traffic congestion and energy waste, have not been completely solved, yet some problems have become even more critical. This dissertation focuses on solving the following fundamental problems: (1) passenger demand prediction, (2) transportation mode detection, (3) traffic light control, in the transportation field using deep learning. The dissertation also extends the application of deep learning to an embedding system for visualization …

Novel Use Of Neural Networks To Identify And Detect Electrical Infrastructure Performance, Evan Pierre Savaria Jul 2019

Novel Use Of Neural Networks To Identify And Detect Electrical Infrastructure Performance, Evan Pierre Savaria

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Electrical grid maintenance and repairs are crucial services that keep America’s lights on. Electrical service providers make it their priority to uphold minimal interruptions to this service. Electricity is essential for modern technology within the home, such as cooking, refrigeration, and hot water. Organizations, such as schools, hospitals, and military bases, cannot properly function or operate without power. When analyzing the current electrical infrastructure, it is evident that considerable components of the power grid are aging and in need of replacement. Additionally, threats and damage continue to occur. These damages occur not only due to simple, single power line failure …

Robust Lightweight Object Detection, Siddharth Kumar May 2019

Robust Lightweight Object Detection, Siddharth Kumar

Master's Projects

Object detection is a very challenging problem in computer vision and has been a prominent subject of research for nearly three decades. There has been a promising in- crease in the accuracy and performance of object detectors ever since deep convolutional networks (CNN) were introduced. CNNs can be trained on large datasets made of high resolution images without flattening them, thereby using the spatial information. Their superior learning ability also makes them ideal for image classification and object de- tection tasks. Unfortunately, this power comes at the big cost of compute and memory. For instance, the Faster R-CNN detector required …

Human Activity Recognition Based On Multimodal Body Sensing, Anish Hemant Narkhede May 2019

Human Activity Recognition Based On Multimodal Body Sensing, Anish Hemant Narkhede

Master's Projects

In the recent years, human activity recognition has been widely popularized by a lot of smartphone manufacturers and fitness tracking companies. It has allowed us to gain a deeper insight into our physical health on a daily basis. However, with the evolution of fitness tracking devices and smartphones, the amount of data that is being captured by these devices is growing exponentially. This paper aims at understanding the process of dimensionality reduction such as PCA so that the data can be used to make meaningful predictions along with novel techniques using autoencoders with different activation functions. The paper also looks …

Chatbots With Personality Using Deep Learning, Susmit Gaikwad May 2019

Chatbots With Personality Using Deep Learning, Susmit Gaikwad

Master's Projects

Natural Language Processing (NLP) requires the computational modelling of the complex relationships of the syntax and semantics of a language. While traditional machine learning methods are used to solve NLP problems, they cannot imitate the human ability for language comprehension. With the growth in deep learning, these complexities within NLP are easier to model, and be used to build many computer applications. A particular example of this is a chatbot, where a human user has a conversation with a computer program, that generates responses based on the user’s input. In this project, we study the methods used in building chatbots, …

Facial Re-Enactment, Speech Synthesis And The Rise Of The Deepfake, Nicholas Gardiner Jan 2019

Facial Re-Enactment, Speech Synthesis And The Rise Of The Deepfake, Nicholas Gardiner

Theses : Honours

Emergent technologies in the fields of audio speech synthesis and video facial manipulation have the potential to drastically impact our societal patterns of multimedia consumption. At a time when social media and internet culture is plagued by misinformation, propaganda and “fake news”, their latent misuse represents a possible looming threat to fragile systems of information sharing and social democratic discourse. It has thus become increasingly recognised in both academic and mainstream journalism that the ramifications of these tools must be examined to determine what they are and how their widespread availability can be managed.

This research project seeks to examine …
