Introduction To Gis Using Open Source Software, 4th Ed, Frank Donnelly

Open Educational Resources

This tutorial was created to accompany the GIS Practicum, a day-long workshop offered by the Newman Library at Baruch College CUNY that introduces participants to geographic information systems (GIS) using the open source software QGIS. The practicum introduces GIS as a concept for envisioning information and as a tool for conducting geographic analyses and creating maps. Participants learn how to navigate a GIS interface, how to prepare layers and conduct a basic geographic analysis, and how to create thematic maps. This tutorial was written using QGIS version 1.8 "Lisboa", a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) desktop GIS software package.

Cobweb Theorems With Production Lags And Price Forecasting, Daniel Dufresne, Felisa Vázquez-Abad May 2013

Cobweb Theorems With Production Lags And Price Forecasting, Daniel Dufresne, Felisa Vázquez-Abad

Publications and Research

The classical cobweb theorem is extended to include production lags and price forecasts. Price forecasting based on a longer period has a stabilizing effect on prices. Longer production lags do not necessarily lead to unstable prices; very long lags lead to cycles of constant amplitude. The classical cobweb requires elasticity of demand to be greater than that of supply; this is not necessarily the case in a more general setting. Random shocks are also considered.

Adoption Of Short Message Service: Gender Difference, Chulsung Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, Chongwoo Park Jan 2013

Adoption Of Short Message Service: Gender Difference, Chulsung Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, Chongwoo Park

Publications and Research

While the adoption of mobile devices has recently received research attention, there has been little research focusing on a specific application or service running in mobile devices. In this study, we examine the adoption of short message service (SMS) with the technology acceptance model. The model has been assessed with the data collected from 225 SMS users. Results from the partial least squares analysis show that perceived ease of use of SMS positively affects perceived usefulness of SMS and intention to adopt SMS, and perceived usefulness of SMS also positively affects intention to adopt SMS. Comparing the two factors, perceived …

On The Nonsymmetric Longer Queue Model: Joint Distribution, Asymptotic Properties, And Heavy Traffic Limits, Charles Knessl, Haishen Yao Jan 2013

On The Nonsymmetric Longer Queue Model: Joint Distribution, Asymptotic Properties, And Heavy Traffic Limits, Charles Knessl, Haishen Yao

Publications and Research

We consider two parallel queues, each with independent Poisson arrival rates, that are tended by a single server. The exponential server devotes all of its capacity to the longer of the queues. If both queues are of equal length, the server devotes of its capacity to the first queue and the remaining to the second. We obtain exact integral representations for the joint probability distribution of the number of customers in this two-node network. Then we evaluate this distribution in various asymptotic limits, such as large numbers of customers in either/both of the queues, light traffic where arrivals are infrequent, …

Publications and Research

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Disease (NIDDK) Central Data Repository (CDR) is a web-enabled resource available to researchers and the general public. The CDR warehouses clinical data and study documentation from NIDDK funded research, including such landmark studies as The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT, 1983–93) and the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC, 1994–present) follow-up study which has been ongoing for more than 20 years. The CDR also houses data from over 7 million biospecimens representing 2 million subjects. To help users explore the vast amount of data stored in the NIDDK CDR, we developed …

Centerline Extraction For Image Segmentation Using Gradient And Direction Vector Flow Active Contours, Shuqun Zhang, Jianyang Zhou Jan 2013

Centerline Extraction For Image Segmentation Using Gradient And Direction Vector Flow Active Contours, Shuqun Zhang, Jianyang Zhou

Publications and Research

In this paper, we propose a fast centerline extraction method to be used for gradient and direction vector flow of active contours. The gradient and direction vector flow is a recently reported active contour model capable of significantly improving the image segmentation performance especially for complex object shape, by seamlessly integrating gradient vector flow and prior directional information. Since the prior directional information is provided by manual line drawing, it can be inconvenient for inexperienced users who might have difficulty in finding the best place to draw the directional lines to achieve the best segmentation performance. This paper describes a …
