The Investigation Of The Low Temperature Combustion Of Mesitylene And Tert-Amyl Methyl Ether By Synchrotron Photoionization Mass Spectrometry, Martin Yu-Hin Ng May 2015

The Investigation Of The Low Temperature Combustion Of Mesitylene And Tert-Amyl Methyl Ether By Synchrotron Photoionization Mass Spectrometry, Martin Yu-Hin Ng

Master's Theses

This thesis describes the combustion experiments performed at the Chemical Dynamics Beamline of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) located at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories (LBNL). The need for renewable fuel sources, the need for the study of their combustion in the contexts of homogenous charge combustion ignition (HCCI) engines can be found in Chapter 1. The components of the experimental set-up used throughout this thesis—time-of-flight mass spectrometer, Excimer laser, vacuum pumps and other components—and the components of ALS responsible in synchrotron radiation generation and processing—the linear accelerator, the booster ring, insertion devices, gas filters and monochromator are explained in …

Methodology Development In Green Chemistry: Oxoammonium Salt Oxidations And Fluoroform Incorporation, Rebecca J. Wiles May 2015

Methodology Development In Green Chemistry: Oxoammonium Salt Oxidations And Fluoroform Incorporation, Rebecca J. Wiles

University Scholar Projects

Central to the advancement of small molecule synthesis is the ability to develop methodologies that reimagine well known chemistry in a new, environmentally friendly manner. In this thesis two central themes emerge: oxoammonium salt oxidations and trifluoromethyl incorporation using fluoroform gas. Several projects have been developed surrounding oxoammonium salt chemistry, which are featured by their mild conditions, ease of use, and the metal-free, recyclable nature of the oxidant. Trifluoromethylation using fluoroform gas finds its utility in the use of a potent greenhouse gas waste product as a benchtop reagent.

Oxidation Of Dibenzothiophene To Dibenzothiophene-Sulfone Using Molybdenum (Vi) Oxide, Tungsten (Vi) Oxide, And Ratios Of Molybdenum (Vi) Oxide And Tungsten (Vi) Oxide At Atomspheric Pressure, Sean M. Pelfrey May 2015

Pelfrey

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This is a study of the catalytic oxidation of dibenzothiophene to dibenzothiophene sulfone using molybdenum (VI) oxide, tungsten (VI) oxide, and mixtures of molybdenum (VI) oxide and tungsten (VI) oxide at atmospheric pressure. The oxidative desulfurization reaction is studied with respect to the kinetics and thermodynamics of the process. Five catalysts were synthesized using a precipitation reaction. The five catalysts were 100% MoO3, 75/25% MoO3/WO3, 50/50% MoO3/WO3, 25/75% MoO3/WO3, and 100% WO3. Each catalyst was calcinated at three different temperatures 250oC, 500oC, 750oC and characterized using X-Ray Diffraction. Reactions of DBT-catalyst were held, under reflux, at temperatures from 140 oC …

Sulfur-Oxidation Enhances Nitrile Hydration In Bioinspired Ruthenium Complexes : Catalytic, Kinetic, And Dft Investigations., Davinder Kumar May 2015

Sulfur-Oxidation Enhances Nitrile Hydration In Bioinspired Ruthenium Complexes : Catalytic, Kinetic, And Dft Investigations., Davinder Kumar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current dissertation focuses on the effects of sulfur‒oxidation on nitrile hydration activity of a series of ruthenium(II) complexes inspired by nitrile hydratase (NHase). NHase catalytically hydrates nitriles to amides at a low spin non‒heme Fe(III) or non‒corrin Co(III) metal center. The active‒site employs a N2S3X type donor set using two carboxamido nitrogens and three cofacial cysteinic sulfurs that are present in distinct oxidation states as sulfinate (RSO2¯), sulfenate (RSO¯), and thiolate (RS¯). The apical site is occupied by substrate or solvent. A lack of sulfur‒oxidation renders the enzyme inactive. Three precatalysts, LnRuPPh3 (n = 1‒3), are employed to assess …

Synthetic And Mechanistic Studies Of Catalytic Oxidations By Manganese(Iii) Porphyrin And Iodobenzene Diacetate, Kawai Kwong Apr 2015

Synthetic And Mechanistic Studies Of Catalytic Oxidations By Manganese(Iii) Porphyrin And Iodobenzene Diacetate, Kawai Kwong

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

With iodobenzene diacetate [PhI(OAc)2] as the oxygen source, manganese(III) porphyrin complexes exhibit remarkable catalytic activity towards the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons. The readily soluble PhI(OAc)2 in the presence of small amount of water is more efficient oxygen source than the commonly used PhIO under the same conditions, leading to a potent catalytic system for the efficient oxidation of alkenes and activated hydrocarbons. When the reactions were carried out in the presence of a small amount of water at 50 oC, high selectivity for epoxides and excellent catalytic efficiency with up to 10,000 TON have been achieved in alkene epoxidations. In …

Naio4 Oxidation Of Mussel Adhesive Protein Film And Its Corrosion Protection For Mg-1.0ca Alloy, Rui-Qing Hou, Ping-Li Jiang, Shi-Gang Dong, Chang-Jian Lin Feb 2015

Naio4 Oxidation Of Mussel Adhesive Protein Film And Its Corrosion Protection For Mg-1.0ca Alloy, Rui-Qing Hou, Ping-Li Jiang, Shi-Gang Dong, Chang-Jian Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

The effect of oxidation of mussel adhesive protein (Mefp-1) film on the corrosive resistance for Mg-1.0Ca alloy was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atom force microscopy (AFM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and electrochemical methods. The results showed that the NaIO4 induced oxidation of the pre-formed Mefp-1 film with porous morphology involved structural change of the DOPA group in the protein and resulted in a more uniform film with net-like morphology. The protein film without oxidation had an increasing resistance for the corrosion of Mg-1.0Ca alloy up to 7 days exposure. After oxidation, Epit …

Burst Pressure Properties And Ex Vivo Analysis Of Alginate-Based Hydrogels For Tissue Sealant Applications, Patrick Nelson Charron Jan 2015

Burst Pressure Properties And Ex Vivo Analysis Of Alginate-Based Hydrogels For Tissue Sealant Applications, Patrick Nelson Charron

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Lung diseases, cancers, and trauma can result in injury to the connective tissue lining the lung, i.e., the pleura. Pleural injuries lead to pneumothoraxes or pleural effusions, i.e., air or fluid leaking out of the lung respectively, and potential lung collapse - an immediately life threatening condition. While several bioengineered soft tissue sealants exist on the market, there is only one sealant FDA-approved for use in pulmonary surgery. In addition, very limited techniques are presented in the literature for characterizing the burst properties of hydrogel tissue sealants. For my thesis, I proposed to develop a protocol for characterizing the burst …
