Co Adsorption On Supported Gold Nanoparticle Catalysts: Application Of The Temkin Model, Christopher J. Pursell, Bert D. Chandler, M. Manzoli, F. Boccuzzi

Chemistry Faculty Research

The adsorption of CO on the supported gold nanoparticle catalysts Au/TiO2, Au/Fe2O3, and Au/ZrO2 was examined using infrared transmission spectroscopy to quantify the isobaric CO coverage as a function of temperature. The Temkin adsorbate interaction model was then applied to account for the adsorption behavior. To test the general applicability of the Temkin model, this treatment was also applied to three data sets from the literature. This included another real-world catalyst and two model catalysts. All data sets were accurately represented by the Temkin adsorbate interaction model. The resulting thermodynamic metrics are consistent with previous determinations and reflect a particle …

Recent Applications Of The Simple Hydrocarbon Cyclooctatetrene As A Starting Material For Complex Molecule Synthesis, Kevin W. Glaeske, William Donaldson Jan 2012

Recent Applications Of The Simple Hydrocarbon Cyclooctatetrene As A Starting Material For Complex Molecule Synthesis, Kevin W. Glaeske, William Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Cyclooctatetraene [COT], a simple non-aromatic cyclic polyene, is capable of undergoing a variety of oxidation and cycloaddition reactions to afford polycyclic structures. In addition, complexation of COT or the cycloaddition products with transition metals facilitates bond formation. Recent developments in the reactivity of COT and application to the synthesis of naturally occurring and non-naturally occurring compounds is reviewed.

Effects Of Activated Carbon Surface Chemistry Modification On The Adsorption Of Mercury From Aqueous Solution, Emily K. Faulconer Jan 2012

Effects Of Activated Carbon Surface Chemistry Modification On The Adsorption Of Mercury From Aqueous Solution, Emily K. Faulconer

Publications

Mercury (Hg), a naturally occurring element, is toxic and can lead to negative health impacts for humans and ecosystems. Activated carbon adsorption is effective in treating Hg-laden aqueous effluent for safe discharge. Two modifications of commercially available activated carbon were investigated: iron impregnation to allow for magnetic sorbent recapture and wet chemical oxidation to enhance aqueous Hg capture. The modified carbons were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, XRD, pHpzc, vibrating sample magnetometry, elemental analysis, and total acidity titration. The 3:1 C:Fe magnetic powdered activated carbon (MPAC) retained a high surface area of 790 m2 /g and was 95% magnetically recoverable, with …

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, And Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation Activity Of Mononuclear Manganese(Ii) Complex With 2,2'-Bipyridine: [Mn(Bipy)_2(Clo_4)_2], İbrahi̇m Kani̇, Mehmet Kurtça Jan 2012

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, And Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation Activity Of Mononuclear Manganese(Ii) Complex With 2,2'-Bipyridine: [Mn(Bipy)_2(Clo_4)_2], İbrahi̇m Kani̇, Mehmet Kurtça

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A manganese(II) complex of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The activity of the complex was tested for oxidation of benzyl alcohols using t-BuOOH as an oxidant in organic solvents and in an organic/water biphasic system (hexane/H_2O, toluene/H_2O). The effect of solvent, temperature, oxidant, and some additives (KBr, N(C_4H_9)Br, and N-bromosuccinimide) on the oxidation of benzyl alcohol is reported. The results show that benzyl alcohol was selectively converted to benzaldehyde in 71.9% yield within 4 h in acetonitrile. Control experiments performed without catalyst and the corresponding metal salt as catalyst produced no benzaldehyde …

Synthesis Of Novel Ionic Liquid Tagged Porphryin Media Designed For The Oxidation Of Lignin, Joseph Hugh Franklin Baker Jan 2012

Synthesis Of Novel Ionic Liquid Tagged Porphryin Media Designed For The Oxidation Of Lignin, Joseph Hugh Franklin Baker

Online Theses and Dissertations

The ever growing need for a viable renewable fuel source has led to this thesis project; the biomimetic lignin degradation by means of a homogeneous oxidative catalyst in corresponding ionic liquids. Lignin comprises nearly a third of lignocellulosic biomass and is cross-linked to both cellulose and hemicellulose. Current utilization methods of lignin do not generate the full value of the polymer, because they do not yield many of the valuable feed stock chemicals it is comprised of. To improve the value of the biomass as a whole and create a viable economy for the US's transition to biofuels, better utilization …
