The design of bioinspired polymers has long been an area of intense study, however, applications to the design of concrete admixtures for improved materials performance have been relatively unexplored. In this work, we functionalized poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), a simple analogue to polycarboxylate ether admixtures in concrete, with dopamine to form a catechol-bearing polymer (PAA-g-DA). Synthetic routes using hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt) as an activating agent were examined for their ability in grafting dopamine to the PAA backbone. Previous literature using the traditional coupling reagent 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDC) to graft dopamine to PAA were found to be inconsistent and the sensitivity of EDC coupling …

Primary aliphatic amines which are ubiquitous in natural products, traditionally considered as inert to substitution reactions. Recent studies clearly demonstrated that the aliphatic deaminative coupling chemistry can be used to make valuable scaffolds through C–N bond activation on transition metal complexes. The catalytic system generated in situ from the tetranuclear Ru–H complex with a catechol ligand (2-9/2-16) and independently synthesized ruthenium catecholate complex 2-11 was found to be effective for the direct deaminative coupling of primary amines. The catalytic system formed in-situ from the reaction of cationic Ru–H complex 2-10 with 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone 2-12 was found to mediate a regioselective deaminative …

A simple two-step, shaking-assisted polydopamine (PDA) coating technique was used to impart polypropylene (PP) mesh with antimicrobial properties. In this modified method, a relatively large concentration of dopamine (20 mg ml−1) was first used to create a stable PDA primer layer, while the second step utilized a significantly lower concentration of dopamine (2 mg ml−1) to promote the formation and deposition of large aggregates of PDA nanoparticles. A catechol-based benzoxazine copolymer is reported via a new approach using an oxazine-thiol reaction. The main chain benzoxazine precursor was obtained via the classic benzoxazine synthesis methodology using the raw chemicals catechol, formaldehyde, and 4,7,10-trioxa-1,13-tridecanediamine. The countercomponent was synthesized from poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether via the Fischer esterification reaction. The obtained reactive catechol-based benzoxazine was then reacted in mild conditions with polymeric thiol precursor to obtain a copolymer structure. The precursors and the resulting structure were characterized by thermal and spectral analyses using DSC, TGA, FT-IR,$^{\, 1}$H NMR, and GPC. Hydroxytyrosol, 3,4-dihydroxyphenolethanol, a naturally occurring polyphenol most common in olive tree (Olea europaea), is one of the most effective member of the polyphenols family, because of its remarkable antioxidant activity, its ability to inhibit oxidation of low density lipids (LDL), and its protection against DNA oxidative damage. Current dental restoration materials fall short in adhesion and often pull away from the surface of the tooth upon curing. This project seeks to design polymers that can adhere to wet, heterogeneous surfaces as potential materials for dental restoration applications. The goal of this project is to mimic the structure and adhesive properties of natural adhesives containing 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (DOPA). Abstract: Photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) can be used to harvest light from the oxidation of dissolved organic matter. Similar to fuel cells but requiring light to operate, PECs contain a light assisted electrode that oxidises electron rich materials (anode); these electrons then flow to a typically Pt cathode where O2 is normally the electron acceptor. In this work a PEC cell containing inexpensive materials was shown to (a) mineralise typical organic compounds present in waste water and (b) produce electricity from their decomposition. Inhibitors of melanin formation are sought after for a range of applications. Boronophenylalanine is known to inhibit melanogenesis via boronic acid-catechol interactions. A spectroscopic assay was developed to study the polymerization of L-dopa to synthetic melanin in the presence of para-substituted aryl boronic acids. The best inhibition was observed for aryl boronic acids with electron-withdrawing substituents. The IC50 values exhibit a correlation with the Hammett sigma(p) parameter (rho = 0.97, r(2) = 0.92).

The toxicity of tobacco has been attributed to the ability of catechol and hydroquinone to undergo endogenous or exogenous redox cycling to form semiquinone type radicals responsible of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) formation. Biologically damaging semiquinone-type radicals have been reported in cigarette smoke, their likely origin being hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT) molecular precursors contained by the tobacco. Since other biomass contains HQ and CT-type species, it is likely that combustion of other biomass will also form semiquinone-type radicals. All hydrocarbon fuels will form phenol and substituted phenol that can form substituted phenoxyl radicals. A study of the anodic polarography of catechol in 0.100 F sodium perchlorate is presented. A new wave is observed in alkaline solutions which is different from the simple oxidation wave of catechol to ortho-quinone observed by previous workers. The importance of buffer materials is discussed and a possible explanation of the new wave is suggested.

The effectiveness of catechol, an aromatic vic-diol, in dissolving silicate minerals was studied. A synthetic amorphous magnesium trisilicate, Mg₂Si₃O₈∙5H₂O, as well as the minerals olivine, sepiolite, diopside, augite, and enstatite were used to react with catechol in slightly acidic, basic, and neutral solutions. It was found, depending on the solvent used, that 33-52, 8-17, 14-30, 5-11, 3-6, and 0.5-1 % of the minerals dissolved, respectively.

The reaction with Mg₂Si₃0₈·5H₂0 resulted in the formation of crystals of magnesium tris (catecholato) siliconate nonahydrate Mg[Si(Cat)₃]∙9H₂0. Dehydration of the crystals at room temperature resulted in the loss of 6 moles of water to form …
