Synthesis And Characterization Of Antimony Cyanoximates For Microbiological Studies, Seth Adu Amankrah Jan 2022

Synthesis And Characterization Of Antimony Cyanoximates For Microbiological Studies, Seth Adu Amankrah

MSU Graduate Theses

Antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms (such as MRSA and alike) represent a real and significant threat to the health and wellbeing of the general population. The search for new compounds of non-antibiotic nature that act as antimicrobial agents is an important task with obvious practical applications in the biomedical field. Metal-based coordination and organometallic compounds that demonstrate antimicrobial activity was found to exhibit a completely different mode of action compared to antibiotics. That suggests the absence of the mechanism of developing tolerance to these types of compounds at least for 30 - 40 years. Thus, there are numerous organotin (IV), silver (I), …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Pb(Ii) Cyanoximates, Patricia Mcdaniel Jan 2022

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Pb(Ii) Cyanoximates, Patricia Mcdaniel

MSU Graduate Theses

A new series of Pb(II) cyanoximates were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis (C, H, N, S), IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and X-ray crystallography. The goal was to synthesize compounds with a PbL2 (L= selected known chelating cyanoximes) composition for use as potential new non-linear optical (NLO) materials, specifically second harmonic generators (SHG), which must belong to non-centrosymmetric space groups. A desktop procedure using Pb2+ is chosen due to its typically active 6s2 lone pair of electrons, which are known to distort central polyhedra. A 1:2 ratio of Pb(II) to ligand were used to synthesize bulk products …

Mass Spectral And Chemometric Analysis For The Detection And Identification Of Forensically Relevant Materials, Meghan Grace Appley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Forensic science is the application of science to the law which in and of itself covers a substantial number of disciplines. Many of these involve the detection and identification of materials using analytical techniques. Traditional analysis methods include microscopy, spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The materials encountered by forensic practitioners are ever evolving, resulting in the need to develop new methods to complement conventional techniques to enhance the evidentiary value of the samples. The research presented here shows that novel methods including direct analysis in real time–high-resolution mass spectrometry (DART-HRMS), thermal desorption coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS), solid-phase microextraction (SPME) …

Novel Solid State Properties Of Drugs, Polymers And Various Chemicals By Thermal And Analytical Techniques, Dhruthiman R. Mantheni

ETD Archive

I have observed unique variations in AC electrical conductivity of solids by dielectric analysis (DEA or DETA) when studied with respect to temperature and frequency. A wide range of solids were examined for this study e.g. organics, polymers, carbohydrates, API's (active pharmacy ingredients) and amino acids. Experimental results clearly show novel dielectric behavior of a linear increase in a log ionic conductivity vs. temperature in the pre-melt (20 to 30oC below the melt temperature) and melt transition regions. We have differentiated the solids which show the conductivity variations in pre-melt from those which do not e.g. pre-melt conductivity variations observed …

Thermal Analysis As An Important Research Tool For Colleges And Universities, Jeffrey Allen Fruscella Jan 2011

Thermal Analysis As An Important Research Tool For Colleges And Universities, Jeffrey Allen Fruscella

ETD Archive

Three experiments were performed to demonstrate that thermal analysis is an important tool for use in colleges and universities for conducting scientific research. The first experiment used thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal mechanical analysis to compare polymer resins from two ResinKits®, one from 1994 and the other from 2010. Analysis was done to determine if resins from the 1994 kit were viable standards. The experiments showed significant thermal differences between select resins and it was concluded that resins form the 1994 ResinKit® are no longer acceptable as standards. The second experiment used thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry to determine the …

Novel Thermal Analytical Techniques To Characterize Drugs And Drug Delivery, Lakshmi Swetha Kaza Jan 2011

Novel Thermal Analytical Techniques To Characterize Drugs And Drug Delivery, Lakshmi Swetha Kaza

ETD Archive

This thesis encompasses three significant projects. The study includes the characterization and evaluation of the properties of a commercial contraceptive transdermal patch, Ortho Evra® by Dielectric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). This study helps in monitoring the mobility of the drug and transport properties by Isothermal and Scanning Dielectric Analysis as a function of temperature and frequency. The drugs in this product are norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol. DSC was used to detect any crystalline character of the drugs by their fusion properties. Having no melting endotherm and detecting a glass transition temperature suggested that the drugs in the patches …

Introduction To Pharmaceutical Thermal Analysis: A Teaching Tool, Shravan Singh Thakur

ETD Archive

Significant Thermal Analysis-physical chemical data needs to be acquired by the new analyst whether an entry level chemist or a new function for the experienced pharmaceutical scientist. This teaching tool describes the introductory use of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA) for characterizing pharmaceuticals. Optimum Experimental conditions for DSC, TGA and TMA will focus on collecting the best results and interpretations. Does the sample contain volatiles? Evaporation creates endothermic peaks, 2 water or solvent can lower the glass transition temperature (Tg) by up to 100°C and affect the crystallization temperature on cooling. The decomposition temperature …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Self-Healing Poly (Carbonate Urethane) Carbon-Nanotube Composites, Roger Wesley Bass

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Synthesis of high molar mass polycarbonate polyurethanes using a novel polyol is described. The resulting elastomers demonstrate excellent mechanical properties as well as the capability to re-heal after rupture without the addition of additives or imbedded healing agents. The self-healing functionality is shown to greatly improve with the addition of up to 1% single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The interface of the carbon nanotubes and self-healing polymer are probed using Raman techniques and provide an insight into how the self-healing actions are improved with the addition of carbon nanotubes.

Synthesis of polycarbonate polyurethanes and carbon nanotube composites using a novel …

Study Of Drug Delivery Behavior Through Biomembranes Using Thermal And Bioanalytical Techniques, Hareesha Reddy Venumuddala

ETD Archive

This Master of Science thesis encompasses two projects in chemical pharmaceuticals. The first is a study of excipients and the added new information collected beyond Thermal Gravimetric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry from Dielectric Analysis. These new properties enhance our global knowledge of excipients by thermal analytical methods. Excipients, the inactive ingredients in formulated drugs, aid different functions of the active pharmacy ingredient, the drugs. Low temperature transitions, by DEA including melting of frozen solvents, e.g. water, are more definitive than observed by low temperature DSC. Millions of dollars are expended annually on pharmaceutical testing to qualify excipients for fully …

Disintegration Of Tablets And Capsules Measured By Isothermal Thermal Mechanical Analysis And Macrophotography, Visweswararao Badipatla

ETD Archive

The current United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) test for tablet and encapsulated drug disintegration does not specify the initial disintegration time and provides limited information on the disintegration process itself. An isothermal Thermal Mechanical Analysis (IsoTMA) method is presented to measure the rate and initial time of drug disintegration, that is, the mechanical collapse of the gelatin capsule or the solid tablet. This method monitors changes in the dimensions of the formulated drugs during their disintegration in a liquid. Dimensional changes can be followed as a function of time, temperature, applied stress and pH. Some of the drugs studied were Olanzapine®, …

Thermal Characterization Of Carbon Monoxide Oxidation Catalysts Using Thermogravimetric Analysts And Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Rene A. Bartgis Oct 1991

Thermal Characterization Of Carbon Monoxide Oxidation Catalysts Using Thermogravimetric Analysts And Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Rene A. Bartgis

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Catalysts composed of platinum and/or palladium on tin (IV) oxide supports, with and without silica gel, as well as catalysts composed of gold on manganese oxide, have been developed for the recombination of carbon monoxide and oxygen to form carbon dioxide for use in carbon dioxide lasers. A thermogravimetric method and a differential scanning calorimetric method have been developed for the thermal characterization of these catalysts. The mass loss data and the enthalpy changes determined as the catalysts lost water were then related to existing activity data for these catalysts. No relationship was found between the thermal data and the …
