Precipitation And Coacervation In Polyelectrolyte-Colloid Systems, Fatih Comert
Precipitation And Coacervation In Polyelectrolyte-Colloid Systems, Fatih Comert
Doctoral Dissertations
Complex coacervation between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (PEs) and colloids (i.e. micelles and proteins) has increasingly become popular due to the use of these materials in a range of applications including but not limited to personal care, biomaterials, protein purification, and food science. In taking advantage of complex coacervation, which is a liquid-liquid phase separation, precipitation has always represented a problem by introducing inhomogeneities, irreversibility and irreproducible kinetics. Therefore, understanding the dominant factors driving the formation of precipitates is important to control outcomes. In this work, we have performed comparative studies of coacervation and precipitation in model PE-colloid systems to investigate …
Patterning And Mechanical Analysis Of Fiber-Based Materials, Samuel A. Pendergraph
Patterning And Mechanical Analysis Of Fiber-Based Materials, Samuel A. Pendergraph
Doctoral Dissertations
The ability to define and control the topography of a surface has been studied extensively due to its importance in a wide variety of applications. The control of a non-planar topography would be very valuable since a number of structures that are pervasive in artificial applications (e.g. fibers, lenses) are curved interfaces. This potential of enabling applications that incorporate non-planar geometries was the motivation for this thesis. The first study of this thesis comprises the study of patterning the circumference of micrometer sized fibers. Specifically, a unique technique was described to pattern the fiber with a periodic array of colloids. …
Fabrication And Assembly Of Patchy Particles With Uniform Patches, Zhenping He
Fabrication And Assembly Of Patchy Particles With Uniform Patches, Zhenping He
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Patchy colloidal particles have been widely studied as the self-assembly building blocks to illustrate their potential for forming complex structures. The parameters affecting the final assembly structures include (i) patch size, shape, and number per particle, (ii) their relative positions, and (iii) the surface properties of the patch material. Recent computational studies have highlighted the impact of patch shape on assembly structure; however, there are only a limited number of methods that can provide control over patch shape and size. In this thesis, a template is introduced to the Glancing Angle Vapor Deposition method (GLAD) to create surface anisotropy on …
Chelating Compounds As Potential Flash Rust Inhibitors And Melamine & Aziridine Cure Of Acrylic Colloidal Unimolecular Polymers (Cups), Jigar K. Mistry
Chelating Compounds As Potential Flash Rust Inhibitors And Melamine & Aziridine Cure Of Acrylic Colloidal Unimolecular Polymers (Cups), Jigar K. Mistry
Doctoral Dissertations
Waterborne coatings on ferrous substrates usually show flash rusting which decreases the adhesion of the coating and the corrosion products can form a stain. Chelating compounds were investigated as potential flash rust inhibitors. Compounds being evaluated include amine alcohols, diamines and sulfur containing amines. A new corrosion inhibitor 2,5-bis(thioaceticacid)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (H2ADTZ) was synthesized and its performance characteristics were evaluated. It was noted that the observed structure of 1,3,4-thiadiazolidine-2,5-dithione (also known as 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD or DMcT)) has been previously reported in three different tautomeric forms including -dithiol and -dithione. The relative stability of each form as well as the synthesis and characterization …
The Development Of Colloid Chemistry, Oscar A. Bouise
The Development Of Colloid Chemistry, Oscar A. Bouise
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
At first, it was as a blur, that had shrouded a great mystery for ages and ages, until some seventy odd years ago. Then came Thomas Graham, who could not satisfy himself with merely viewing a blur as a blur. Being a scientist, he applied his mind experimentally, which the keen precision of any of the eminent astronomers using a telescope, and viewed more clearly this mist which hovered above the horizon.
