Synthesis Of Novel Dienes And Cyclic Compounds Via Olefin Metathesis Reactions Catalyzed By The Second Generation Grubbs Catalyst, Patrick Joseph Carey May 2015

Synthesis Of Novel Dienes And Cyclic Compounds Via Olefin Metathesis Reactions Catalyzed By The Second Generation Grubbs Catalyst, Patrick Joseph Carey

Honors Theses

Transition metal-catalyzed olefin metathesis reactions play a significant role in chemical synthesis. These reactions are currently applied across several disciplines, and their full potential has not yet been reached. This project details the synthesis of spiro[3-cyclopentene-1,9’-[9H]fluorene], 1-(1-amino-2-methylpropyl)-3-cyclopentenol, and the eugenol dimer via olefin metathesis reactions catalyzed by the second generation Grubbs catalyst. The unique structural properties of each compound help demonstrate the widespread abilities of these reactions. Also reported are the novel three-dimensional crystal structures of both spiro[3-cyclopentene-1,9’-[9H]fluorene] and the eugenol dimer. These structures were determined via X-ray diffraction crystallography methods using a Bruker SMART X2S Single Crystal Diffractometer. Both …

Synthetic And Mechanistic Studies On The Cross-Coupling Reactions Catalyzed By Ruthenium Complexes, Ruili Gao Apr 2011

Synthetic And Mechanistic Studies On The Cross-Coupling Reactions Catalyzed By Ruthenium Complexes, Ruili Gao

Dissertations (1934 -)

Transition metal catalyzed C-H bond activation reaction is a powerful synthetic method for forming functionalized products directly from unreactive hydrocarbons, and has enormous synthetic potentials for developing chemical processes ranging from petroleum products to pharmaceutical agents. In an attempt to mimic the high stereo selectivity and region selectivity of catalytic reactions by transition metal catalysts, recent research has focused on design and synthesis of transition metal complex and the application on the coupling reactions involving C-H bond activation.

Herein, we wish to report the highly effective coupling reactions involving C-H bond activation by using well-defined ruthenium catalysts. Ruthenium hydride complex …

Characterization Of Black Deposit Associated With Rock Paintings In Little Lost River Cave, Idaho Using Pyrolysis Gc, Sarah Therese Fezzey Jan 2005

Characterization Of Black Deposit Associated With Rock Paintings In Little Lost River Cave, Idaho Using Pyrolysis Gc, Sarah Therese Fezzey

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A black, shiny coating overlies rock paintings in Little Lost River Cave no. 1, located in southeastern Idaho. If this coating is the result of human activity within the cave – a condensate from cooking fires, for example – then a radiocarbon date on the coating would provide a minimum age for the underlying paintings. The work reported here was undertaken to test the assumption that the coating has an anthropomorphic origin. Using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (py-GC-MS) and thermally-assisted hydrolysis/methylation-GC-MS, we have compared samples of the black coating from Idaho to humic acid, a geologic material; an experimental cooking residue; …

A Study Of The Reactions Of P-Dipiperidino Benzene And Its Synthesis From 1,4-Dicyano-1,4-Dipiperidinocyclohexane, Ilias Konstantinos Dorziotis Apr 1991

A Study Of The Reactions Of P-Dipiperidino Benzene And Its Synthesis From 1,4-Dicyano-1,4-Dipiperidinocyclohexane, Ilias Konstantinos Dorziotis

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Following a classical synthesis of PCP2 Williams attempted to prepare l,4-diphenyl-1,4-dipiperidino cyclohexane 41 . This approach involved the preparation of 1,4- dicyano-1,4-dipiperidinocyclohexane 7 and the subsequent decyanation of the compound with phenylmagnesium bromide to produce 4. This attempt failed, however, as only the monophenylated product, 8, was thought to be obtained. This product had unique reactivity, producing a blue intermediate upon treatment with halogen in both aqueous and non aqueous media. The same intermediate was produced upon irradiation of a chloroform solution of this product with sunlight or UV light in a UV chamber, with the …

The Reaction Of 2-Arylprop-1-En-3-Yltrimethylammonium Iodides With Sulfur Nucleophiles And Useful Synthetic Applications Of These Adducts, Steven J. Duranceau Jan 1987

The Reaction Of 2-Arylprop-1-En-3-Yltrimethylammonium Iodides With Sulfur Nucleophiles And Useful Synthetic Applications Of These Adducts, Steven J. Duranceau

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses research involving the reactions of 2-arylprop-1-en-3-yltrimethyl ammonium iodides with sulfur nucleophiles and the useful synthetic applications of the adducts formed. The present work may be subdivided into four sections: 1) reactions of several 2-arylprop-1-en-3-yltrimethylammonium iodides with benzenethiol; 2) reactions of several 2-arylprop-1-en-3-yltrimethylammonium iodides with the sodium salt of benzenesulfinic acid; 3) reactions of several 2-arylprop-1-en-3-yltrimethylammonium iodides with 2-mercapto-1-methyl imidazole; and 4) oxidation of 2-aryl-3-phenylthio-1-propenes and 2-aryl-3-phenylsulfonyl-1-propenes using sodium perborate. This report outlines the experimental conditions and procedures responsible for the synthesis of these products; in addition, this report describes the physical properties, NMR and IR spectra of …

Dilithiation Reactions Of N-Substituted Benzylamines, Richard Patrick Franks Jan 1985

Dilithiation Reactions Of N-Substituted Benzylamines, Richard Patrick Franks

Theses & Honors Papers

N-Cyclohexyl -2-methylbenzylamine was metalated with two equivalents of n-butyllithium activated with one equivalent of tetramethylethylenediamine (T.M.E.D.A.) , and the solvent system, time, and temperature were varied to establish a maximum yield . It was experimentally found that a thirty minute ice-water bath metalation in diethyl ether, followed by a fifteen minute condensation with benzophenone in refluxing diethyl ether gave the best yield with the benzophenone electrophile. The product was characterized by N.M.R. and found · to be 2- ( cyclohexylamino)-2-(2-toluyl ) -1 ,1-diphenylethanol (the benzylic adduct) in a 29% yield.

When N-cyclohexyl -2-methylbenzylamine was metalated for three hours in an …

The Effects Of Various Chemical Treatments On The Surface Area Of Coals, Maria Margaret Ludvig Mar 1983

The Effects Of Various Chemical Treatments On The Surface Area Of Coals, Maria Margaret Ludvig

Dissertations and Theses

Surface areas of most American coals are small when measured by N2 adsorption at 77 K and large when measured by CO2 adsorption at 298 K, implying that the majority of the pores are less than 5 Å in diameter. This small pore size would restrict many gaseous and liquid reactants from entering the internal pore system of the coal, and hence, reduces the efficiency of coal conversion. Therefore, if the surface area, as measured by N2 (77 K), could be increased, that is, to increase the pore size, the conversion of coal into useful products should …

The Addition Of Sf5br To Unsaturated Systems, Qui-Chee Wendy Wang Jun 1976

The Addition Of Sf5br To Unsaturated Systems, Qui-Chee Wendy Wang

Dissertations and Theses

Addition reactions of pentafluorosulfur bromide with unsaturated substrates were studied and four new compounds containing the pentafluorosulfur group have been prepared.

The mechanism for these reactions seems to involve a radical addition pathway. In reaction with CH2=CFC1, CF3C≡CH and CH3C≡CH the SF5 radical attacks the carbon atoms carrying the most hydrogens. The reaction with CF2=CHCl is interesting, as by analogy with other fluoroolefins, the SF5 primary attack should occur.at the CHCl group, however, SF5CF2CHC1Br was found as the only product for this reaction. The reaction of …
