Development Of New Useful Methods For Aldehyde Synthesis And Its Application In Synthesis, He Huang May 2018

Development Of New Useful Methods For Aldehyde Synthesis And Its Application In Synthesis, He Huang

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Development of sustainable synthetic technologies for molecular construction is an important but formidably challenging task in modern organic synthesis. Aldehyde synthesis represents a long-standing interest in synthesis because of the synthetic utility. Classic methods for aldehyde synthesis have the drawbacks of the use of harsh reaction conditions, poor atom-economy and multi-step operation, and production of stoichiometric amount of chemical wastes. The state-of-the-art strategies employ transition metal complexes as catalysts to promote formylation reactions. The concerns of catalyst cost, operation complexity and poor functional group tolerance demands more efficient synthetic technologies. My Ph.D. study focuses on design of conceptually novel catalytic …

Computational Modeling Of Electronically Excited States In Cobalamin-Dependent Reactions., Brady D. Garabato May 2018

Computational Modeling Of Electronically Excited States In Cobalamin-Dependent Reactions., Brady D. Garabato

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current understanding of the photolytic properties of Vitamin B12 derivatives or cobalamins are summarized from a computational point of view. The focus is on two non-alkylcobalamins, cyanocobalamin (CNCbl) and hydroxocobalamin (HOCbl), two alkylcobalamins, methylcobalamin (MeCbl) and adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl), as well as the stable cob(II)alamin radical. Photolysis of alkylcobalamins involves low-lying singlet excited states where photo-dissociation of the Co-C bond forms singlet-born alkyl/cob(II)alamin radical pairs (RPs). Potential energy surfaces (PESs) of low-lying excited states as functions of both axial bonds provide the most reliable tool for analysis of photochemical and photophysical properties. Due to the size limitations associated with the …

Organic Photochemistry: Remote Delivery Of Reactive Oxygen Intermediates Via A Heterogeneous Approach, Niluksha Walalawela Abeykoon Feb 2018

Organic Photochemistry: Remote Delivery Of Reactive Oxygen Intermediates Via A Heterogeneous Approach, Niluksha Walalawela Abeykoon

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Photosensitized oxidation reactions produce a number of intermediates species, which are generated in varying amounts over time. This complexity presents major challenges in the study of oxidation processes. Mechanistic efforts to separate and deliver reactive oxygen intermediates enable their controlled use in processes such as bacterial inactivation. This thesis describes a heterogeneous reaction approach taken to control the generation and delivery of reactive oxygen intermediates. The mechanistic details of photosensitized reactions were elucidated via synthetic, materials, and physical organic techniques to optimize the delivery of reactive oxygen intermediates. This thesis contains six chapters as described below.

Chapter 1 gives a …

Photochemistry Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons With Environmentally Relevant Metals, John P. Haynes Jan 2018

Photochemistry Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons With Environmentally Relevant Metals, John P. Haynes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The details of the work presented in this dissertation focus on simulated reactions in the atmosphere and water systems between persistent aromatic compounds and varying species of metals with an emphasis on iron. Bulk water suspensions of a standard soil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were analyzed for soluble iron by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) following a 16 hour reaction period using simulated sunlight. Significant increases in soluble iron were only seen with 2-3 ring linear PAH and carboxylic acids.

A two-stage study was conducted to investigate the potential for and possible mechanisms involving the photo-oxidation of PAH into …
