Photodynamic Killing Of Human Cancer Cells With Smart Photosensitizer Materials And An Endoscopic Implement For Singlet Oxygen Delivery, Mihaela N. Minnis Sep 2016

Photodynamic Killing Of Human Cancer Cells With Smart Photosensitizer Materials And An Endoscopic Implement For Singlet Oxygen Delivery, Mihaela N. Minnis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The thesis describes progress on probe tips for a microoptic device for the precise delivery of the components necessary for photodynamic therapy (PDT) in a highly localized and controllable fashion. The thesis also summarizes results of a photosensitized oxidation study. The work focused on i) developing a photoactive fluoropolymer surface that will release sensitizer drug molecule for use in PDT, ii) designing new probe tips surfaces for use as sensitizer support for a microoptic PDT device, iii) exploring strategies for covalent attachment of sensitizers and model compounds to Teflon/PVA surfaces with the aim of being coupled with our microoptic device, …

Preparation And Characterization Of Singlet-Oxygen Generating Thiol-Ene Networks Containing Fullerene And Metallofullerene Derivatives, Emily Matthews Barker Aug 2016

Preparation And Characterization Of Singlet-Oxygen Generating Thiol-Ene Networks Containing Fullerene And Metallofullerene Derivatives, Emily Matthews Barker

Dissertations

This work explores the derivatization of C60 and Sc3N@C80 with S-, P-, and C- centered radicals, and is the first exploration into the functionalization of Sc3N@C80 with sulfur and phosphorous. The number of addends bound to C60, as a function of reaction time and molar ratios, as well as, structure-property relationships including thermal stability, solubility, and singlet oxygen generation were explored. Fullerene derivatives exhibiting enhanced solubility were incorporated into two different thiol-ene polymer matrices at varying thiol-ene monomer concentrations (1:1 or 1:0.75 molar equivalents) and at different C60 loadings (0, …

Photooxidation Chemistry And Photodynamic Therapy: Pointsource Delivery Of Singlet Oxygen, Sensitizer And Nitrosamine Drugs, Ashwini Anil Ghogare Jun 2016

Photooxidation Chemistry And Photodynamic Therapy: Pointsource Delivery Of Singlet Oxygen, Sensitizer And Nitrosamine Drugs, Ashwini Anil Ghogare

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Eradication of residual tumor cells that are directly adjacent to vital tissue is a daunting challenge to surgeons. Because the field needs advances in intraoperative settings and a means for high-precision delivery of singlet oxygen for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancers, this dissertation outlines the development and application of a “pointsource” fiber optic device. The device offers highly localized and simultaneous delivery of sensitizer drug, light, and oxygen (components necessary for PDT) for cancer cell eradication in-vitro and in-vivo. The following chapters describe (a) the photokilling activity and precision of pointsource PDT in monolayer ovarian and brain cancer cells …

Epoxy Siloxane Self-Cleaning Coating Using F64pczn/Tio2 Photocatalyst Composite, James F. Sullivan May 2016

Epoxy Siloxane Self-Cleaning Coating Using F64pczn/Tio2 Photocatalyst Composite, James F. Sullivan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

A new photocatalytic composite powder incorporated into a siloxane epoxy polymer has been shown to yield a highly efficient self-cleaning coating. The composite, which makes greater use of light in the visible/near-infrared (NIR) region, was prepared by coating a nano-particle photocatalytic TiO2 with 3% w/w of F64PcZn photosensitizer resulting in a dark green powder. The F64PcZn/P25 TiO2 composite exhibited a greater photo-induced degradation of methyl red, a model surface contaminant, compared to traditional nano-particle photocatalytic TiO2. Singlet oxygen (1Δg 1O2), generated form the F64PcZn, …

Mechanistic Studies Of The Structure-Photostability Relationship Of Organic Conjugated Polymers, Logan Paul Sanow Jan 2016

Mechanistic Studies Of The Structure-Photostability Relationship Of Organic Conjugated Polymers, Logan Paul Sanow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organic Conjugated polymers (CPs) are a subject of intense research for their application in organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), solid-state dye lasing, biological imaging and sensing, chemical sensing and remote sensing. CPs are key materials in the quest for more sustainable forms of renewable energy, making electronics more versatile and light weight, and increasing the functionality of everyday materials. For these applications and others that use CPs as the photoactive material, one of their main drawbacks is their susceptibility to photodegradation. Photodegradation occurs when the material is exposed to light leading to irreversible changes in the materials, …
