Polymeric Porphyrins As Solar Photocatalysts, Nicholas Upton Day Nov 2015

Polymeric Porphyrins As Solar Photocatalysts, Nicholas Upton Day

Dissertations and Theses

Research concentrated on the absorption, transformation, and storage of light energy is useful for the energy challenges faced by humanity. In particular, photocatalysis using solar energy to generate useful fuels has become a primary research goal in the drive to replace fossil fuels for the future. In this dissertation it is shown that poly-tetra(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin (pTAPP) can be oxidatively polymerized using a variety of methods, including electropolymerization, chemical oxidation, and interfacial polymerization and that pTAPP has photocatalytic ability to reduce O2 to H2O2 for a storable fuel.

Organic conductive polymers such as pTAPP are attractive catalysts because …

Analysis And Comparison Of The Photodecomposition Reaction Of Methanol On Ceo2 Impregnated Tio2 Surfaces Versus Bare Tio2 Surfaces, Christopher A. Estes May 2015

Analysis And Comparison Of The Photodecomposition Reaction Of Methanol On Ceo2 Impregnated Tio2 Surfaces Versus Bare Tio2 Surfaces, Christopher A. Estes

Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been well-studied primarily due to its unique photocatalytic activity. Different preparation techniques have been developed to increase its photocatalytic activity by various means, including simply increasing the surface area, changing the makeup of the framework, and modifying the surface with a dopant. This study focuses on the effect cerium oxide (CeO2) has on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 by depositing CeO2 on the TiO2 surface. Methanol is used as a probe reactant for these experiments due to its wide use in heterogeneous catalysis research and the limited products that …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Polyacetal & Design And Preparation Of Superhydrophobic Photocatalytic Surfaces, Yuanyuan Zhao Feb 2015

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Polyacetal & Design And Preparation Of Superhydrophobic Photocatalytic Surfaces, Yuanyuan Zhao

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Polyacetal polymers are thermoplastic resins that play an important role in industry because of numerous industrial applications including automobile; household appliance; etc. The first part of this thesis (Chapter 2) is about the synthesis of a new acetal copolymer that exhibits superior thermal stability. The second part of this thesis (Chapter 3) is about the preparation and applications of TiO2-based polymer nanocomposite films, where the reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated on the solid surface. Catalytic nanocomposite films are an active area of research because of their potential uses for environmental remediation and chemical synthesis. Furthermore, to …

Synthesis Of Fluorene-Based Derivatives, Characterization Of Optical Properties And Their Applications In Two-Photon Fluorescence Imaging And Photocatalysis, Grace Githaiga Jan 2015

Synthesis Of Fluorene-Based Derivatives, Characterization Of Optical Properties And Their Applications In Two-Photon Fluorescence Imaging And Photocatalysis, Grace Githaiga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The two-photon absorption (2PA) phenomenon has attracted attention from various fields ranging from chemistry and biology to optics and engineering. Two of the common NLO applications in which organic materials have been used are three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence imaging and optical power limiting. Two-photon absorbing materials are, therefore, in great demand to meet the needs of emerging technologies. Organic molecules show great promise to meet this need as they can be customized through molecular engineering, and as the development of two-photon materials that suit practical application intensifies, so does research to meet this need. However, there remains some uncertainty in the …

Efficient Utilization Of Solar Energy In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells And In The Photocatalytic Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide, Aron Joel Huckaba Jan 2015

Efficient Utilization Of Solar Energy In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells And In The Photocatalytic Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide, Aron Joel Huckaba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most important questions humanity will face in the next 100 years is going to be "What will happen when oil runs out?" This dissertation describes efforts to utilize solar energy to improve renewable energy technology in two ways: First, through the improvement of dye sensitized solar cells by theimprovement of D-π-A dye subunits, the development of practical sensitizers, and progress towards stable, tunable redox shuttles. A novel indolizine donor subunit was synthesized that was shown to be the strongest reported donor. Dyes made from this novel donor and devices using the Γ-/I 3- reached up to 5.4% …

I. Synthesis Of Ascarosides For Chemical Biology Studies In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Ii. A Photochemical Approach To Delavayine, And Iii. Remote Hydroxylation By Radical Translocation And Polar Crossover, Kyle Allen Hollister Jan 2015

I. Synthesis Of Ascarosides For Chemical Biology Studies In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Ii. A Photochemical Approach To Delavayine, And Iii. Remote Hydroxylation By Radical Translocation And Polar Crossover, Kyle Allen Hollister

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The foci of this dissertation are the synthesis of analogs for chemical biology studies, synthetic chemistry method development (with an emphasis on photochemistry), and the application of these methods toward total synthesis. Chapter 1 outlines the synthesis of an array of pheromone analogs that are derivatives of the dideoxy sugar ascarylose. Referred to as ascarosides, such compounds have recently been shown to influence important biological processes in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. C. elegans secretes ascarosides into its environment, where the compounds then act as signaling molecules by providing information on factors like population density. Chapter 2 describes the biological …
