Studies In The Behavior Of Certain Cyclic Olefins Toward Divalent Platinum And Palladium, Ernest Sam Juljian Jan 1964

Studies In The Behavior Of Certain Cyclic Olefins Toward Divalent Platinum And Palladium, Ernest Sam Juljian

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The initial program of study for consideration was the extension of cyclooctatetraene complexation to other metals of the transition group. Compounds of (COT) with iron, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten which have been reported in the literature involve carbonyl ligands simultaneously as (COT)M(CO)x with x = 2,3----; only Ag(I) as AgN03 adducts are known. Rhodium (I) is said to form an unstable dimer while ruthenium (I) forms a polymer. (COT)Pt(II) chloride, bromide and iodide have been reported but only the iodide has been studied; only (COT)PdCl2 has been reported recently. It was further conceived that substituted (COT) would …

A Study Of The Platinum (Ii), Palladium (Ii), And Rhodium (Iii) Chelates Of Aspartic And Glutamic Acid, Cecilia Elizabeth Luschak Jan 1964

A Study Of The Platinum (Ii), Palladium (Ii), And Rhodium (Iii) Chelates Of Aspartic And Glutamic Acid, Cecilia Elizabeth Luschak

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is fairly well known that alpha-amino dicarboxylic acids combine quite readily with basic metal ions such as the alkaline earths. The nature of the problem includes the synthesis and characterization of six platinum metal chelates of two alpha-animo dicarboxylic acids, namely aspartic and glutamic acids. The metal ion upon which the investigation is focused are platinum (II), palladium (II), and rhodium (III). Several of these are reported as having been repaired. The series is incomplete, however, and little study has been done correlating the abilities and trends of the complexes as a function of the metal ion and carbon …

The Transition Metal Complexes Of Anthranilic Acid And Its Derivatives, Jesse Smith Decker Jan 1964

The Transition Metal Complexes Of Anthranilic Acid And Its Derivatives, Jesse Smith Decker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Part of this investigation was undertaken to determine the effects of functional group substitution on the ring - as well as on the -NH2 radical - on the formation of metal complexes with the first transition series in the periodic classification of the elements.

The outline of the investigation in this report is as follows: (1) To mind methods for the preparation of the complexes.; (2) To examine the relative ease of formation, and the relative solubility of such chelates in common laboratory reagents.; (3) To determine the relative stabilities by relative molar conductance measurements.; (4) To discover relative …

Controlled-Potential Polarography In Liquid Ammonia: Inorganic Half-Wavepotentials, Ronald Alan Head Jan 1964

Controlled-Potential Polarography In Liquid Ammonia: Inorganic Half-Wavepotentials, Ronald Alan Head

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The literature of polarography is so vast that any new publication in the field is likely to have an impact comparable to that of a raindrop falling on an ocean. If, however, through some alchemy of the imagination, the raindrop transformed to quicksilver and accompanied by discharge of "lightning"; and the "ocean" be a solution under carefully controlled conditions, then the effect may be measurable--even reproducible--and thus subject to rational interpretation. Since Jaroslav Heyrovsky's pioneer work in the early nineteen twenties, many such drops have fallen, bringing the science and art of polarography to its present highly developed state. Though …

The Protein Of Phleum Pratense, Clifford A. Dean Jan 1964

The Protein Of Phleum Pratense, Clifford A. Dean

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As the chemist increases his knowledge and understanding of the complex and delicate nature of the proteins, many of the methods which are used in the handling and treatment of protein systems need to be reviewed and reexamined in the light of the new information which is now available.

This study has endeavored to take the biologically active protein system from the pollen or timothy grass (Phleum pratense) and examine its stability under currently used methods of extraction, purification, and storage.

New chemical agents were studied in connection with the above mentioned protein tor their possible use in the place …

Chalcone Derivatives From Pyrrole-2-Aldehyde, Ahmad Hamidi Jan 1964

Chalcone Derivatives From Pyrrole-2-Aldehyde, Ahmad Hamidi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Claisen first synthesized Chalcone in 1881 by condensing acetophenone with benzaldehyde using sodium methoxide as a condensing agent. Chalcone and its derivatives have been prepared primarily as intermediates for the synthesis of anthocyanins and other related pigments.

In recent years extensive preparation and study of chalcones has been carried out utilizing chalcones for their biological effects in medical and pharmaceutical fields. It has been shown that certain highly substituted compounds present in the flower pigments as additives to adhesive absorb ultraviolet radiation. Carboxylic acid chalcones have become known for their therapeutic action in the treatment of chronic kidney diseases, diseases …
