Development Of An Effective Au:Pd Bimetallic Heterogeneous Catalyst For Oxidative Lignin Depolymerization To Low Molecular Weight Aromatics, Gayan P. Karunasinghe Jan 2023

Development Of An Effective Au:Pd Bimetallic Heterogeneous Catalyst For Oxidative Lignin Depolymerization To Low Molecular Weight Aromatics, Gayan P. Karunasinghe

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

The principal concept behind biorefining involves the transformation of lignocellulosic biomass into valuable products and energy resources. Historically, biorefinery strategies for lignocellulosic biomass have primarily focused on improving the conversion of cellulose into ethanol, often neglecting the underutilized lignin component. Lignin consists of phenolic subunits, from which it follows that value-added products can be obtained from lignin depolymerization. Unfortunately, lignin utilization is particularly challenging due to its high structural irregularity and recalcitrance. The goal of this study was to develop an AuPd/Li-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) bimetallic catalyst for efficient lignin depolymerization, resulting in the production of high-value aromatic compounds. …

Oxidative Depolymerization Of Lignin To Low Molecular Weight Aromatics, Yang Song Jan 2019

Oxidative Depolymerization Of Lignin To Low Molecular Weight Aromatics, Yang Song

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

To date, most lignocellulosic biorefinery strategies have focused on optimizing conversion of cellulose to ethanol, leaving lignin as an underutilized biomass constituent. Lignin is engineered by nature with the intent to protect plants from chemical and biological attack; this leaves lignin with high structural irregularity and recalcitrance, rendering conversion of the lignin macromolecule to valuable products particularly challenging. Nevertheless, given that the economics of cellulosic ethanol production are strongly dependent on the value that can be obtained for the lignin co-product, the successful valorization of lignin is a crucial step in the transition towards a bio-based economy.

Application Of Pyrolysis-Gc/Ms To The Study Of Biomass And Biomass Constituents, Anne E. Ware Jan 2013

Application Of Pyrolysis-Gc/Ms To The Study Of Biomass And Biomass Constituents, Anne E. Ware

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Fast pyrolysis, the rapid thermal decomposition of organic material in the absence of oxygen, is a process that can be used to convert biomass into liquid fuels and chemicals. When performed at the micro-scale, pyrolysis is useful for characterizing biomass structure, as well as determining the pyrolysis products that can be generated from specific biomass feedstocks. Indeed, microscale pyrolysis coupled with on-line analysis of the pyrolysis vapors by GC/MS, so-called pyrolysis-GC/MS (Py-GC/MS), is a technique that can be used to characterize the structure and composition of the various components of lignocellulosic and microalgal biomass based on their pyrolysate distributions. Pyrolysates …
