Structural Analysis Of [Ni(Dippe)] Fragment Using Computational Methods, Jennifer L. Sanchez

The structural analysis of the Nickel (Bisdiisopropylphospino)ethane, also known as [Ni(dippe)H]2, has been heavily studied in our group in collaboration with William D. Jones's group. A computational analysis of the [Ni(dippe)] fragment was performed to determine the structural relationship between the nickel center and its phosphine ligand, due to phosphines having both electronic and steric properties. The reactivity of the Nickel will be most dependent on the dippe ligand. A conformational search generated 244 conformers after a thorough minimization using Molecular Mechanic (MM) calculations where a thorough minimization was performed and then re-minimized using a SEED command until unique conformers …

Carbon-carbon bond activation has become a rapidly growing area of research due to its extensive range of applications. Despite the significant progress that has been made in this field, the cleavage of kinetically inert and thermodynamically stable CC σ-bonds under mild homogeneous conditions remains a challenge. The activation is primarily limited to systems in which either relief of strain or aromatization serves as a driving force. The Investigation of Nickel-Based Catalysts for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane Justin Lane ParkDepartment of Chemistry & Biochemistry, BYU Doctor of Philosophy Chemistry The advancement of creating ethylene from ethane via oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) rather than the traditional direct dehydrogenation is right on the cusp of commercialization. The oxidative pathway provides a novel route that reduces the operating temperature of this reaction by 400-500°C. A variety of metals including Mo, V, and Ni that have redox properties suitable for the partial oxidation of small chain alkanes have been investigated. In this work, we have addressed some of the issues surrounding catalytic crosscoupling reactions by using a nickel terpyridine catalyst, [Ni(tpy)(py)(CH3CN)2](PF6)2 in the Buchwald-Hartwig amination reaction and a functionalized variant, [(2,2':6',2''- terpyridine-4'-benzoic acid)Ni(II)]Cl2 on SiO2, in Suzuki coupling. These processes are unique in the approaches taken to achieve reactivity. In the Buchwald-Hartwig amination reaction, we used photoredox dual catalytic methods to achieve a sustainable approach to generate secondary and tertiary amines. Transition metal phosphide materials have found themselves at the forefront of research revolving around energy applications. Due to the vast range of properties possessed by marginally different phase compositions, binary and ternary metal phosphides are utilized as catalysts, semi-conductors and magnetocaloric materials along with many others. These attractive properties, which are highly phase dependent, call for a versatile and cost effective synthesis route for various phosphide materials without sacrificing properties important at the nanoscale such as particle size and morphology.
