Synthesis, Characterization, And Functionalization Of 2-Vinyl-4,4-Dimethylazlactone Brushes To Create Bio-Inspired Materials, Camille Marie Kite

Masters Theses

Functional materials built from polymer scaffolds inspire many potential uses, including as biomaterial surfaces or sensors. In situ functionalization using well-defined polymer “brushes” made by tethering polymer chains to a surface by one of their ends is explored. Specifically, poly(2-vinyl-4,4-dimethylazlactone) (PVDMA) chains, which contain a reactive azlactone ring at each repeat unit, are tethered to a surface to create brushes and these films are functionalized using a variety of small molecules, primarily amines or peptides. Relationships between polymer brush thickness, size of the functionalizing molecule, solution concentration, reaction time, and extent of functionalization were determined through measurements of brush thickness …

Synthesis Of 1,1-Dialkyhydrazines And Their Hydroxyl Radical Degradation In Aqueous Environments, Benjamin F. Strong Aug 2012

Synthesis Of 1,1-Dialkyhydrazines And Their Hydroxyl Radical Degradation In Aqueous Environments, Benjamin F. Strong

Masters Theses

Determination of hydroxyl radical rate constants are essential to ensure adequate degradation of contaminants in wastewater. Hydrazines are an important class of organic contaminants and are the focus of this research. Ten 1,1-dialkylhydrazines are synthesized by the zinc reduction of the corresponding N-nitrosamines. Their hydroxyl radical rate constants are determined using the linear accelerator at the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory at pH 4, 7, and 10.

Their rate constants are found to depend on the protonation state of the molecule. At pH 4 the molecules are fully protonated and hydrogen atom abstraction is favored from the alkyl chains. At …

Utility Of 1,2,4-Triazoles As Catalysts For Orr In Fuel Cells, Chinmay Nagesh Dabke Aug 2012

Utility Of 1,2,4-Triazoles As Catalysts For Orr In Fuel Cells, Chinmay Nagesh Dabke

Masters Theses

The Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) taking place at the cathode of a fuel cell is catalyzed by Platinum due to its high activity and good stability in the acidic polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) environment. Due to its prohibitive cost and limited reserves, it is not practical to use Pt as the catalyst for mass commercialization. By taking inspiration from nature, we have devised a series of catalysts which will help in replacing Platinum at the cathode in commercial fuel cells. To gauge the activity of various ligands, metal salts and carbon surfaces, adsorbed experiments were carried out and …

Design And Synthesis Of Boronic Acid-Based Sensors For Microarray Analysis And Fret-Detection To Study Carbohydrates, Yilin Wang

Masters Theses

Carbohydrates play significant roles in various biological and pathological processes such as cancer metastasis and inflammation. They participate in various signaling pathways and are able to bind to a litany of biological receptors such as proteins and viruses. Biologists have known for decades that the structure of glycans changes with the onset of cancer and inflammation. Due to these important activities, carbohydrate sensing has long been a focus of research. One example of such a carbohydrate sensor is boronic acid-based sensors. Boronic acid-based sensors are of particular interest due to their selectivity for 1,2- or 1,3-diols. A variety of techniques …

Electrochemical Characterization Of Thin-Film Perovskite-Type La1-Xsrxmno3 Electrodes Obtained By Pulsed Laser Deposition (Pld), Keerthi Chandra

Masters Theses

The implementation of fuel cells into commercial usage is prenominally dependent on the activity of cathode at which oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) takes place. Fuel cells currently use noble metals like platinum, palladium etc as cathode for the reduction reaction. These metals showed poor performance during changes in red ox environment. Perovskite oxides which were proven to be efficient as cathodes in solid oxide fuel cells operating at high temperature was studied to understand its ability to carry out ORR in alkaline fuel cells operating at room temperature.

La1-XSrxMnO3 (LSMO), thin film perovskite oxide, a …

Exploring Phenyl Embrace Interactions In Trityloxy And Tritylamino Aromatic Compounds, Premnath Basa Jan 2012

Exploring Phenyl Embrace Interactions In Trityloxy And Tritylamino Aromatic Compounds, Premnath Basa

Masters Theses

The area of supramolecular chemistry seeks to understand the organization of molecular structures and the interactions that hold such assemblies together by non-covalent interactions such as electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking interactions, and hydrophobic or solvatophobic effects. One such example that comes under supramolecular chemistry is the phenyl embrace interaction. These interactions occur due to the cooperative participation of at least three or more neighboring phenyl groups arranged as an interlocking propeller configuration to give complementary edge-to-face or offset face-to-face interactions. In order to understand the effect of functional groups on the tendencies of organic compounds to form phenyl embrace …

Dibenzimidazolium Salts And Their Interactions With 1,5-Dinaphtho-38-Crown-10, David B. Bernthal Jan 2012

Dibenzimidazolium Salts And Their Interactions With 1,5-Dinaphtho-38-Crown-10, David B. Bernthal

Masters Theses

The use of imidazolium salts in mechanically interlocked molecules, like pseudorotaxanes, is of interest because they can be functionalized with side arms that allow for coordination chemistry. It has been previously shown that tetraakylbenzobisimidazolium salts successfully thread through crown ethers, such as 15DN38C10 or BPP34C10, to form pseudorotaxanes. As an extension of the results that were gathered about this novel template, it was our goal to explore the degree to which larger imidazolium salts interact with such crown ethers. This research focused on the interactions between 15DN38C10 and dibenzimidazolium cations that were tetra-substituted with methyl groups, butyl groups, and benzyl …
