Separation Of Optical Isomers By Solvent Extraction, George Truett Mccloud Dec 1964

Separation Of Optical Isomers By Solvent Extraction, George Truett Mccloud

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research was to develop a solvent extraction method to resolve optical isomers. Earlier work25 done in this laboratory has indicated that partial resolution had been obtained by using D(+)-diisopropyl tartrate and water as the immiscible solvent system. Further work done by the author indicates that this method can be used to partially resolve racemic modifications. Before this method is discussed in detail, a summary of the known methods of resolution should be presented.

The Reaction To Ketoacylhydrazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Lavern M. Weisenberger Jul 1964

The Reaction To Ketoacylhydrazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Lavern M. Weisenberger

Masters Theses

Introduction

It has been shown that ketohydrazones react with lead tetraacetate to give azoacetates in good yields (11) according to the following equation:

R2C=N-NH-R + Pb(OAc)4 → R2C(OAc)-N=N-R + Pb(OAe)2 + HOAc

The reaction of the structurally related 4,4- disubstituted ketosemicarbazones with lead tetraacetate quite unexpectedly gave carbamates in good yields (10) presumably according to the following equation:

R2C=N-NH-Co-NR2 + Pb(OAc)4 → R2C-O-CO-NR2 + N2 + Pb(OAc)2 + HOAc

The Reaction Of Ketosemicarbazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Thomas M. Davies Jan 1964

The Reaction Of Ketosemicarbazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Thomas M. Davies

Masters Theses

Introduction

It has been demonstrated that lead tetraacetate will oxidize ketohydrazones to azoacetates in good yields (11).

R2C=N-NH-R + Pb(OAc)4 ------> R2C(OAc)-N=N-R + Pb(OAc)2 + HOAc

Since ketosemicarbazones are structurally equivalent to ketohydrazones, it was thought that the reaction of ketosemicarbazones with lead tetraacetate would proceed in a similar manner. Originally the object of this research was to prepare a series of new azo compounds related to semicarbazones by lead tetraacetate oxidation.

Solubility And Structure Studies Of Nickel (Ii) Acetate, Richard J. Baird Jan 1964

Solubility And Structure Studies Of Nickel (Ii) Acetate, Richard J. Baird

Masters Theses

"The effects of ammonium acetate on the solubility of anhydrous nickel (II) acetate in anhydrous acetic acid was investigated and was found to behave similar to the zinc (II), copper (II), and cobalt (II) systems. Problems with equilibrium, encountered by previous investigators, were overcome. The determination of the structure of nickel (II) acetate hemiacetate was atacked by infrared studies, preparation of adducts, cryoscopic studies, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and absorption spectra. It was found that nickel (II) acetate hemiacetate is octahedrally coordinated with two coordination sites vacant. It was shown that the binuclear cage structure common to copper (II), chromium (II), …

Distribution Of Sodium Perchlorate Between Tributyl Phosphate And Water, John A. Tengler Jan 1964

Distribution Of Sodium Perchlorate Between Tributyl Phosphate And Water, John A. Tengler

Masters Theses

"The questions posed by Carroll (23) concerning a TBP-H2O system and an alkali salt -which is appreciably soluble in TBP have been partially answered by the experiments described in this thesis"--Conclusions, page 38.

Correlation Between Drying Times Of A Vinyl Copolymer Solution And Properties Of Dried Films., Abd El-Rahman M. Naser Jan 1964

Correlation Between Drying Times Of A Vinyl Copolymer Solution And Properties Of Dried Films., Abd El-Rahman M. Naser

Masters Theses

"One of the common methods used in film formation is the solvent evaporation method. As the evaporation starts the viscosity increases due to the inability of the solvent to keep the chains apart, which leads to a drag between molecules.

The rate of evaporation of the solvent (loss of solvent) cannot be equated with the rate of drying, since the latter depends on the results of the loss of solvents in terms of viscosity and plastic properties. The drying time can be defined as the rate at which a film increases its viscosity and thus changes the properties of a …

Pachycereus Marginatus Alkaloids, John M. Brewer Jan 1964

Pachycereus Marginatus Alkaloids, John M. Brewer

Masters Theses

Introduction

Serturner's paper, 1817, "Morphis, a New Salt-forming Substance, and Meconic Acid, as the Chief Constituents of Opium", opened a new era of discovery in organic plant chemistry. His isolation of the first alkaloid was soon followed by the isolation or narcotine by Robiquet and strychnine by Pelletier and Caventou. These basic compounds were at first called vegetable alkalies, but were later renamed alkaloids, meaning alkali-like11.
