Understanding Biomass Upgrading Through Hydrogenolysis Reactions: Kinetics And Mechanism, Jalal Tavana Dec 2020

Understanding Biomass Upgrading Through Hydrogenolysis Reactions: Kinetics And Mechanism, Jalal Tavana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation involves several hydrogenolysis reactions but is mainly focused on hydrodechlorination (HDC) of chlorobenzene (PhCl) and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 2-furancarboxylic acid (FCA). Hydrodechlorination of PhCl has been the subject of research for some time. Here, we used a Pd/C catalyst to study this reaction though rigorous kinetics and mechanistic analyses in a CSTR reactor. The H2/D2 kinetic isotope effect (KIE) experiment revealed that H2 is not involved in a rate controlling step. The kinetics data are in agreement with similar systems reported before and follow a first-order dependence on chlorobenzene, half order for hydrogen and …

Kinetics And Activation Energy Parameters For Hydrolysis Of Acetic Anhydride In A Water-Acetone Cosolvent System, Samson Olowoyo May 2018

Kinetics And Activation Energy Parameters For Hydrolysis Of Acetic Anhydride In A Water-Acetone Cosolvent System, Samson Olowoyo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The hydrolysis of acetic anhydride is a widely-studied liquid phase reaction studied since 1906. Different approaches have been used to study the kinetics of this reaction. Approaches used by researchers have involved the use of sophisticated experimental set-ups. In this work, the pH technique has been adopted which involves the use of a pH meter to monitor the hydrolysis reaction. Analysis of the hydrolysis reaction has been performed for water/acetone cosolvent systems over a range of temperatures and mole fractions. Eyring analysis was performed under isomole fraction conditions and activation enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy for hydrolysis of acetic …

Kinetics Of Formation And Oxidation Of 8-Oxo-7,8-Dihydroguanine (8oxog), Derrick Ampadu Boateng May 2014

Kinetics Of Formation And Oxidation Of 8-Oxo-7,8-Dihydroguanine (8oxog), Derrick Ampadu Boateng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8oxoG) is one of the most important base lesions formed during oxidative damage of DNA. The aim of the present research was to investigate the effects of DNA concentration, G content, and the nature of oxidizing species on the kinetics of 8oxoG in model DNA solutions by using HPLC. The experimentally obtained yields of 8oxoG were typically in the range of 2-2.5% of total concentration of guanine. The ratios of the rate constant of hole diffusion in DNA to the rate constant of conversion of the hole into 8oxoG (kd/kr) were calculated from the experimental …
