Modification Of 2d Materials Utilizing Functional Polymer Interfacial Layers, Ryan Selhorst
Modification Of 2d Materials Utilizing Functional Polymer Interfacial Layers, Ryan Selhorst
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes the modification of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). These materials exhibit unique electronic properties, ranging from metallic to insulating, and can transport either electrons (n-type) or holes (p-type). Polymers containing electronically-active moieties offer a path to control the electronic properties of a 2D material without altering the inherent structure of the semiconductor. This dissertation focuses on the synthesis of polymers bearing chalcogen-rich or zwitterionic moieties to alter the electronic and solution properties of 2D materials. Chapter 2 describes polymers containing sulfur-rich tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and their effects as electroactive coatings on the TMDC molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). …
Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Nano-Assemblies Based On Amphiphilic Macromolecules, Hui Wang
Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Nano-Assemblies Based On Amphiphilic Macromolecules, Hui Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
Recent progress in nanotechnology has been significantly impacting a variety of areas such as utilization in microelectronics, multiphase catalysis, sensing and therapeutics. Our interests are to develop new nanomaterials to understand their structure-property relationships and to utilize them for various applications. In this thesis, we discuss our findings on the design, synthesis and applications of nanomaterials formed by self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules. Micelles are self-assembled nanostructures formed by amphiphilic molecules. They are capable of sequestering hydrophobic guest molecules in an aqueous environment. Other than surfactants, micelles can also be formed by amphiphilic polymers or dendrimers, which are macromolecular surfactants in …
Mass Spectrometric Characterization And Imaging Of Nanoparticles In Biological Samples, Bo Yan
Mass Spectrometric Characterization And Imaging Of Nanoparticles In Biological Samples, Bo Yan
Doctoral Dissertations
Nanoparticles (NPs) are being investigated widely for use in biomedical applications such as imaging, drug delivery, and cancer therapy due to their small size and readily tunable properties. The ability to accurately characterize NPs and monitor their spatial distributions is highly desirable for effective use of NPs and evaluation of their potential adverse environmental, health, and safety effects. In this dissertation, a simple, fast, and sensitive method based on laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) to characterize and track NPs in biological systems has been developed. This method is especially well suited for characterizing core-shell structured NPs, such as quantum dots …
Charge, Bonding, And Magneto-Elastic Coupling In Nanomaterials, Qi Sun
Charge, Bonding, And Magneto-Elastic Coupling In Nanomaterials, Qi Sun
Doctoral Dissertations
Phonons are exquisitely sensitive to finite length scale effects in a wide variety of materials because they are intimately connected to charge, structure, and magnetism, and a quantitative analysis of their behavior can reveal microscopic aspects of chemical bonding and spin-phonon coupling. To investigate these effects, we measured infrared vibrational properties of bulk and nanoscale MoS2 [molybdenum disulfide], MnO [manganese(II) oxide], and CoFe2O4 [cobalt iron oxide]. From an analysis of frequencies, oscillator strengths, and high-frequency dielectric constants, we extracted Born and local effective charges, and polarizability for MoS2 and MnO. For MoS2 nanoparticles, in …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Functionalized Nanomaterials: Heterogeneous Palladium Catalyst And Lithium-Doped Graphene Oxide, Benjamin E Estes
Synthesis And Characterization Of Functionalized Nanomaterials: Heterogeneous Palladium Catalyst And Lithium-Doped Graphene Oxide, Benjamin E Estes
Doctoral Dissertations
As the Earth's population increases and natural resources decrease in supply, the development of new methods for energy storage and the efficient production of industrial chemicals becomes ever more important to humanity. The development of new nanomaterials may offer technological advances in the fields of sustainable energy production and storage, chemical production, medicine, and many others. The emerging field of nanoscience blends chemistry, physics, and engineering to create new materials that take advantage of properties found only on the nanoscale.
In this work, mesoporous silica spheres are used as a support for nanoparticles of palladium. This nanomaterial is shown to …
