The Kinetic Control Of Polymer Micelles; Chemical Functionality, Material Interactions, And Equilibration, Taylor Larison Apr 2023

The Kinetic Control Of Polymer Micelles; Chemical Functionality, Material Interactions, And Equilibration, Taylor Larison

Theses and Dissertations

Polymer micelles have found significant uses in areas such as, energy storage devices, catalysis, opto-electronics, drug-delivery, oil additives, and nanoreactors. In many of these applications the overall micelle size (aggregation number) and chemical functionalization determines performance. To progress towards more advanced materials synthesized from the facile bottom-up approach with polymeric micelles the implementation and study of thermodynamic handles were investigated. Here the kinetic control of micelles was studied across a range of applications; independent control over micelle functionality, the spatial orientation of multiple metal oxide nanoparticles in mesoporous materials via self-assembly, and the use of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to …

Traffic Lights For Catalysis: Stimuli-Responsive Molecular And Extended Catalytic Systems, Grace C. Thaggard, Johanna Haimeri, Roland A. Fischer Prof. Dr., Kyoung Chul Park, Natalia B. Shustova Prof. Dr.

Faculty Publications

The advances made in the field of stimuli-responsive catalysis during the last five years with a focus on the novel recently-emerged directions and applications have been surveyed. Metal-free catalysts and organometallic complexes, as well as biomimetic systems and extended structures, which display switchable catalytic activity for a variety of organic transformations, are discussed. Light-activated systems comprised of photochromic molecules capable of modulating reaction rate, yield, or enantioselectivity based on geometric and electronic changes associated with photoisomerization are the focus of the detailed discussion. Alternative stimuli, including pH and temperature, which could be applied either alone or in combination with light, …

A Comparative Study Of Two Nickel-Based Suzuki-Miyaura Hybrid Molecular Catalysts, Mollie Morrow Apr 2022

A Comparative Study Of Two Nickel-Based Suzuki-Miyaura Hybrid Molecular Catalysts, Mollie Morrow

Senior Theses

Two molecular nickel-based catalysts, (2,2’bipyridine-4,4’-carboxylic acid)nickel(II) chloride and (2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-diamidopropylsilatrane)nickel(II) chloride, were synthesized and subsequently attached to a solid support in the form of amorphous silicon dioxide to create two hybrid molecular/heterogeneous catalysts. Characterization using ICP-MS and ATR-FTIR confirms that both catalysts are bonded to the SiO2 support. The catalysts were both able to catalyze a Suzuki-Miyarua cross-coupling which their molecular counterparts were unable to; the carboxylate catalyst was able to achieve yields of 10% and the silatrane catalyst achieved yields of up to 50%. Post-reaction analysis indicated that while some catalyst desorption occurred in both complexes, active catalytic species …

Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts Addition Of Indoles To Tertiary Allylic Alcohols, Bryan H. Wakefield, Romie Barnes, Traeannah Brown, Ashley M. Jones, Victoria A. Knotts, Christina Martinetti Feb 2022

Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts Addition Of Indoles To Tertiary Allylic Alcohols, Bryan H. Wakefield, Romie Barnes, Traeannah Brown, Ashley M. Jones, Victoria A. Knotts, Christina Martinetti

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

An intermolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indole and tertiary allylic alcohols has been developed. The allylic alcohols were synthesized using a two-step procedure, then exposure of these alcohols to diphenyl phosphate facilitated the desired annulation reaction. This reaction tolerated a variety of indole substitutions to yield 1H,2H,3H,4H-pyrido[1,2-a]indoles.

In Situ Monitoring Of Catalytic Molecular Transformations On Noble Metal Nanocatalysts Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Hui Wang, Qingfeng Zhang, Esteban Villarreal, Hao Jing, Kexun Chen Jan 2020

In Situ Monitoring Of Catalytic Molecular Transformations On Noble Metal Nanocatalysts Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Hui Wang, Qingfeng Zhang, Esteban Villarreal, Hao Jing, Kexun Chen

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Noble metal nanoparticles have long been of tremendous interest in the nanophotonics and nanocatalysis communities owing to their intriguing size- and shape-dependent plasmonic and catalytic properties. The combination of tunable plasmon resonances with superior catalytic activities on the same noble metal nanoparticle, however, has long been challenging because the research on nanoplasmonics and nanocatalysis deals with nanoparticles in two drastically different size regimes. While tunable plasmon resonances are a unique feature of metallic nanoparticles in the sub-wavelength size regime, heterogeneous catalysis requires the use of substrate-supported sub-5 nm nanoparticulate catalysts. In this mini-review article, we share with the readers several …

Shaping Metallic Nanoparticles Toward Integrated Plasmonics And Catalysis, Qingfeng Zhang May 2017

Shaping Metallic Nanoparticles Toward Integrated Plasmonics And Catalysis, Qingfeng Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Noble metal nanoparticles have been of tremendous interest because of their intriguing size- and shape-dependent plasmonic and catalytic properties. The combination of tunable plasmon resonances with superior catalytic activities on the same nanoparticle, however, has long been challenging because plasmonics and catalysis require nanoparticles in two drastically different size regimes. Tunable plasmon resonances is a unique feature of sub-wavelength metallic nanoparticles, whereas heterogeneous catalysis requires the use of sub-5 nm nanoparticles as the catalysts. In this dissertation, I firstly found a unique way to bridge this size gap between nanoplasmonics and nanocatalysis. I demonstrated that desired plasmonic and catalytic properties …

New Bimetallic Iridium Cluster Carbonyl Complexes, Mingwei Chen Jan 2013

New Bimetallic Iridium Cluster Carbonyl Complexes, Mingwei Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Platinum group metal derived bimetallic clusters have been used as precursors to nanoscale catalysts which have been proven to be more effective than their monometallic counterparts. Iridium is a platinum group metal and its applications in catalysis continue to grow. To take advantages of synergies between mixed-metals, we modified iridium clusters with other metal ligands like tin, germanium, and group IB (gold, silver, copper) etc. and obtained a fairly large amount of new iridium derived bimetallic clusters which could be precursors to catalysts with superior properties than that available nowadays. The reaction of Ir4(CO)12 with Ph3SnOH in the presence of …

Distributions Of Nobel Metal Pd And Pt In Mesoporous Silica, J. Arbiol, A. Cabot, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Mesoporous silicananostructures have been synthesized and loaded with Pd and Pt catalytic noble metals. It is found that Pd forms small nanoclusters (3–5 nm) on the surface of the mesoporous structure whereas Pt impregnation results in the inclusion of Pt nanostructures within the silica hexagonal pores (from nanoclusters to nanowires). It is observed that these materials have high catalyticproperties for CO–CH4CO–CH4CO–CH4 combustion, even in a thick film form. In particular, results indicate that the Pt and Pd dispersed in mesoporous silica are catalytically active as a selective filter for gas sensors.
