A Study Of The Mechanism Of The Reaction Between Styrene And Tung Oil, Rowan Joseph Coyle Jun 1951

A Study Of The Mechanism Of The Reaction Between Styrene And Tung Oil, Rowan Joseph Coyle

Honors Theses

It is the purpose of this thesis to study the possible mechanisms by which styrene may react with tung oil. To this end, styrene is reacted with tung oil, using a peroxide catalyst, the reaction product is separated into its components, and a preliminary analysis of these components is made, in an attempt to determine whether the reaction occurs through a Diels-Alder or a co-polymerization type mechanism.

Studies On Some Reactions Of Portland Cement, Edward Shannon Clark Jun 1951

Studies On Some Reactions Of Portland Cement, Edward Shannon Clark

Honors Theses

Studies are made on 1. The mechanism of cement setting, 2. Cement – sawdust mixtures, 3. The effect of soluble compounds on cement, 4. Cement – latex mixtures and 5. Cement – plastic compositions.

Electrodeposition Apparatus Employing A Controlled Cathode Potential, Carl Arthur Hirt Jun 1951

Electrodeposition Apparatus Employing A Controlled Cathode Potential, Carl Arthur Hirt

Honors Theses

The present work was undertaken with the idea of building a simple electrodeposition apparatus employing a controlled cathode potential so that quantitative separations and determinations of various cations could be made. When finished the apparatus was to be employed in the investigation of electrochemical problems. However, so many difficulties arose in the construction of the apparatus that there was not time available for this latter work.

Catalytic Vapor Phase Ethylation Of Phenol, George Wendell Putman Jun 1951

Catalytic Vapor Phase Ethylation Of Phenol, George Wendell Putman

Honors Theses

The object of this research was to study the reaction between ethyl alcohol and phenol and to try to identify some of the products. Further study of the effect of catalyst on the reaction was also undertaken.

Inhibition Of The Thermal Polymerization Of Styrene, Herman Ernst Opitz Jun 1951

Inhibition Of The Thermal Polymerization Of Styrene, Herman Ernst Opitz

Honors Theses

It is the purpose of this thesis to further study the inhibition of the thermal polymerization of styrene along the same lines as Cohen, and wherever necessary to improve and correct his work.

The Effect Of Electrolytes On The Viscosity Of Protein Solutions, Thomas Anthony White Jun 1951

The Effect Of Electrolytes On The Viscosity Of Protein Solutions, Thomas Anthony White

Honors Theses

This project was undertaken to study the Hofmeister series and Loeb's contention that it is incorrect. The protein chosen for study was gelatin. The three salts used were: sodium chloride, sodium acetate and sodium nitrate.

The Ultraviolet Absorption Of Some Nitrogen Heterocycles, Benzotriazole, Benzimidazole, Indazole, Indole, John Edward Fagel Jr. Jun 1951

The Ultraviolet Absorption Of Some Nitrogen Heterocycles, Benzotriazole, Benzimidazole, Indazole, Indole, John Edward Fagel Jr.

Honors Theses

The ultraviolet absorption spectra of benzotriazole, 5, (6)-chloro-benzotriazole, benzimidazole, indazole, and indole have been determined in aqueous solutions of varying acidity in the region 210-300 mmu. An attempt has been made to correlate the absorption spectra of these compounds with their molecular structure. The acidic dissociation constants of several of the compounds have been determined graphically from the absorption data.

The Reliquefaction Of Zirconia Gels, Hubert Joseph Keily Jun 1951

The Reliquefaction Of Zirconia Gels, Hubert Joseph Keily

Honors Theses

The initial reliquefaction of zirconia gels at room temperatures seems to be unique. The following study was made to provide a further description of this phenomenon and to attempt to suggest the nature of it.

Investigations Into The Synthesis Of Indazole, Albin Joseph Rzeszotarski May 1951

Investigations Into The Synthesis Of Indazole, Albin Joseph Rzeszotarski

Honors Theses

These investigations were undertaken in order to prepare a suitable quantity of pure indazole for further research by other student. A secondary and equally important purpose of the work was to study the products of the reaction carried out and their relative abundance under varying conditions of pH. A suitable electronic mechanism for the reaction was to be proposed.

Indazole, at present, has no commercial applications, and is not produced (to the author's knowledge) by any large chemical concern. The interest in this compound is chiefly due to the several structural formulae which have been assigned to it and which …

A Study Of The Structures Of Some Compounds Of The Symmetrical Triazine Series By Means Of Their Ultraviolet Spectra, Robert William Schaefer May 1951

A Study Of The Structures Of Some Compounds Of The Symmetrical Triazine Series By Means Of Their Ultraviolet Spectra, Robert William Schaefer

Honors Theses

The purpose of this work is to investigate the ultraviolet absorption spectra of symmetrical triazines with the outlook of correlating, on a theoretical basis, the date obtained with molecular structure.
