Nanostructured Cerium Oxide Based Catalysts: Synthesis, Physical Properties, And Catalytic Performance, Yunyun Zhou Aug 2015

Nanostructured Cerium Oxide Based Catalysts: Synthesis, Physical Properties, And Catalytic Performance, Yunyun Zhou

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Cerium oxide is an extensively used industrial catalyst with applications as diverse as catalysts for automobile exhaust, petroleum cracking and organic chemicals synthesis. The catalytic activity of cerium oxide is dependent upon its structural properties, especially the oxygen vacancy defects. While recent advances in characterization techniques have dramatically improved our understanding of cerium oxide functionality, many atomic features in cerium oxide contributing to the overall catalytic reactivity are not yet well-understood. This dissertation focuses on the structural studies of catalytically active cerium oxides with different compositions, phases and morphologies, and their utilizations to establish fundamental understandings of cerium oxide based …

Synthesis Of Pyridone Ligands And Iron Precursors For The Development Of Iron-Based Hydrogenation Catalysts, Becky Hanscam Jan 2015

Synthesis Of Pyridone Ligands And Iron Precursors For The Development Of Iron-Based Hydrogenation Catalysts, Becky Hanscam

Summer Research

Green chemistry is concerned with the development of safer, more efficient, and more environmentally acceptable chemical products and processes. An important aspect of green chemistry is the reduction of chemical waste. Catalysis is essential to achieving such a transformation. Hydrogenation is an example of an industrially important catalytic process. Hydrogenation reactions are common in the pharmaceutical industry as they provide a cost-effective and reliable approach to a wide range of compounds. However common hydrogenation catalysts are composed of expensive and toxic metals. The goal this research is to develop hydrogenation catalysts, based on iron, that will be less expensive and …

Developing Catalysts For Improving Direct Amide Formation, Courtney Carley Jan 2015

Developing Catalysts For Improving Direct Amide Formation, Courtney Carley

Summer Research

The widespread occurrence of the amide functional group in the pharmaceutical industry and its prevalence in biological structures such as proteins illustrate the huge impact that amides have on our daily lives. Current methods of forming amides are expensive and harmful to the environment, so there is a need for the development of greener processes for the formation of amides. The first objective of this research is to synthesize catalysts for the direct formation of amides from carboxylic acids and amines. Previously developed catalysts for this transformation are not active enough, and are thus rarely used. The new catalysts to …

Traits And Roles Of Jonas Kamlet, Pioneering Chemistry Consultant, As A Guide To Contemporary Inventors, Dean F. Martin, Autumn S. Thompson

As state universities feel economic pinches of reduced support from state legislatures, and as sources of federal funding for supported research projects face additional challenges, other sources of support need to be found. Two sources under consideration are royalties and licensing fees for successful patents. A good example of a successful developer of patents was Jonas Kamlet, Ph.D. (1914‐1960), who was an early consultant in chemical and other matters and was the successful co-owner, with his wife Edna, of the Kamlet Laboratories. The roles that he played in his career can, we believe, provide good examples for contemporary researchers in …
