The challenges faced with current fluorescence imaging agents have motivated us to study two nanostructures based on a hydrophobic dye, 6H-pyrrolo[3,2-b:4,5-b’]bis [1,4]benzothiazine (TRPZ). TRPZ is a heteroacene with a rigid, pi-conjugated structure, multiple reactive sites, and unique spectroscopic properties. Here we coupled TRPZ to a tert-butyl carbamate (BOC) protected 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propanoic acid (bisMPA) dendron via azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition. Deprotection of the protected amine groups on the dendron afforded a cationic terminated amphiphile, TRPZ-bisMPA. TRPZ-bisMPA was nanoprecipitated into water to obtain nanoparticles (NPs) with a hydrodynamic radius that was <150 nm. For comparison, TRPZ-PG was encapsulated in pluronic-F127 (Mw …150>

We report a simple, rapid, and scalable strategy to fabricate surfaces exhibiting in-air superoleophobic/superhydrophilic wetting via sequential spray deposition and photopolymerization of nanoparticle-laden thiol–acrylate resins comprising both hydrophilic and oleophobic chemical constituents. The combination of spray deposition with nanoparticles provides hierarchical surface morphologies with both micro- and nanoscale roughness. Mapping the wetting behavior as a function of resin composition using high- and low-surface-tension liquid probes enabled facile identification of coatings that exhibit a range of wetting behavior, including superhydrophilic/superoleophilic, superhydrophobic/superoleophobic, and in-air superhydrophilic/superoleophobic wetting. In-air superhydrophilic/superoleophobic wetting was realized by a dynamic rearrangement of the interface to expose a greater …

We report an experimental demonstration of a strategy for inducing two-dimensional (2D)crystallization of charged nanoparticles on oppositely charged fluid interfaces. This strategy aims to maximize the interfacial adsorption of nanoparticles, and hence their lateral packing density, by utilizing a combination of weakly charged particles and a high surface charge density on the planar interface. In order to test this approach, we investigated the assembly of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) on positively charged lipid monolayers at the aqueous solution surface, by means of in situX-ray scattering measurements at the liquid–vapor interface. Theassembly was studied as a function of the solution …

Mesoporous silicananostructures have been synthesized and loaded with Pd and Pt catalytic noble metals. It is found that Pd forms small nanoclusters (3–5 nm) on the surface of the mesoporous structure whereas Pt impregnation results in the inclusion of Pt nanostructures within the silica hexagonal pores (from nanoclusters to nanowires). It is observed that these materials have high catalyticproperties for CO–CH4CO–CH4CO–CH4 combustion, even in a thick film form. In particular, results indicate that the Pt and Pd dispersed in mesoporous silica are catalytically active as a selective filter for gas sensors.
