This thesis describes the studies performed on a number of natural uranium dioxide (UO2) specimens to determine a range of reactivities. This work will support the safety case for the long-term disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Canada. Under relevant long-term disposal conditions, water radiolysis could produce oxidizing conditions at the surface of the fuel, potentially leading to fuel corrosion and the release of radionuclides into the groundwater. Corrosion is a natural process affecting the longevity and integrity of metals. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are robust organic compounds that can form strong σ-bonds with metal atoms, allowing for the formation of monolayers on the metal surface. This property makes NHCs promising for coating metals. However, their long-term effects on the aquatic environment are not well understood. The present study investigated the ecotoxicity of 1,3-diisopropyl-1H-benzoimidazolium bicarbonate (iPrNHC NCO3-), a candidate for organic coating enhancements, on various species of aquatic organisms. As per international consensus on the best practice for managing used nuclear fuel (UNF), the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) plan to isolate and contain UNF within a multiple-barrier system, underground in a deep geological repository (DGR). In the proposed design, used fuel bundles will be sealed in copper-coated carbon steel used fuel containers (UFCs), encased in blocks of highly compacted bentonite clay, and emplaced ~500-800 m (depending on host rock geology) below ground. Any gaps between the rock walls and the compacted bentonite blocks will be filled with a bentonite gap fill material (GFM).

The study of low-coordinate species and the pursuit of interesting bonding motifs has revealed new reactivity modes for main-group compounds, akin to transition metals, in the past two decades. An underexplored class of two-coordinate phosphorus compound is a phosphinidene sulfide, which has yet to be isolated in the solid-state with an accompanying crystal structure. This dissertation explores strategies towards the synthesis and reactivity of low-coordinate phosphinidene chalcogenide species, and related compounds supported by strongly pi-donating or weakly pi-donating environments. N-Acyl ketenimines were attempted to be synthesized catalytically by [Ru(Cp)(PPh2NPh2)(NCMe)]PF6 with phenylacetylene and 3-phenethynyl-1,2,4-dioxazol-5-one. Trapping agents were employed to identify the major product of the reaction, as many products were formed. [Ru(Cp)(PPh2NPh2)(NCMe)]PF6 reacts with 3-phenethynyl-1,2,4-dioxazol-5-one generating an isocyanate via the Curtius rearrangement, confirmed by a forced Curtius rearrangement with 3-phenethynyl-1,2,4-dioxazol-5-one and 1,2,4-triazole. Donor acceptor cyclopropanes (DACs) are versatile organic building blocks used in the synthesis of many pharmaceutically relevant heterocycles. The combination of a high ring strain cyclopropane core and vicinal donor and acceptor substituents cause DACs to behave like 1,3-zwitterions. Recently, DACs have been activated by a hydrogen bond donor solvent in place of a Lewis acid catalyst, allowing the elimination of heavy metals commonly used in these transformations. Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a hydrogen bond donor cosolvent was found to cause a downfield shift of the DACs electrophilic carbon in the 13C NMR spectrum. The evaporation of particle-free silver ink droplets on heated substrates directly impacts the morphology of the resultant silver particles and films. In this thesis, COMSOL Multiphysics simulations of the solvent (water-ethylene glycol mixture) droplet evaporation process are used to explain the microflows, mass transfers, and heat distribution responsible for the experimental observations. The reactive ink incorporates fluoro-surfactant FS-31 and poly (acrylamide) (PAM) to suppress the coffee-ring effect that negatively impacts the electrical conductivity. Matrix-assisted laser/desorption ionization (MALDI) is the preferred method for mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) due to its high spatial resolution. Detecting small molecules like γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate, which are the main inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters respectively, proves challenging as their low masses conflict with background signals from most matrices.

This work optimizes zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NP) as a matrix, focusing on GABA and Glutamate detection. Its absence of background signal makes ZnO suitable for small molecule detection. The deposition of copper oxide films on copper substrates was investigated by the electrochemical, thermal, and hydrothermal oxidation of copper. The formed oxides were characterized using various surface analytical techniques to determine the film’s morphology, composition, and thickness. The results show that by growing oxides electrochemically, a duplex layer composing of CuO and Cu2O film was formed on the copper surface, having characteristics of being porous and possessing needle-like structures. Nickel is a widely abundant and inexpensive metal. Catalysts are substances that remain unconsumed and increase the rate of reactions by reducing the activation energy barrier, often by providing an alternative route. The main goal of this study is to prepare Ni(II) complexes that can promote a catalytic aerobic oxidation reaction by breaking allylic C-H bonds. Based on previous studies, allylnickel N-heterocyclic carbene complexes react with molecular oxygen to give useful carbonyl compounds with a Ni(II)-OH by-product, which undergoes dimerization. As nuclear power plants age and retire from service, many countries face significant challenges concerning the safe long-term storage and disposal of large volumes of low and intermediate level radioactive wastes (L&ILW). The volumes of metallic waste are of particular concern, as when metal corrodes it produces hydrogen that could lead to pressure build-up in interim storage and disposal.
