Exploring The Multiplex Detection Capabilities Of Raman Spectroscopy On Mock Street Samples Containing Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyls, Mia Laverne Williams Burnett Jan 2020

Exploring The Multiplex Detection Capabilities Of Raman Spectroscopy On Mock Street Samples Containing Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyls, Mia Laverne Williams Burnett

Illicitly manufactured fentanyls (IMFs) have become a global and local epidemic and have recently caused an increase in the number of accidental exposures and overdoses in first responders and the community. The aim of the research is to explore a method to discriminate between IMFs and cutting agents in mock street samples using Raman Spectroscopy. Predominant Raman bands corresponding to the structural moieties of each individual illicit, licit drugs, and cutting agents were tracked, then used to discriminate between varying components in a mock street sample. In conclusion, discrimination between the components in the mixture was obtained using Raman Spectroscopy. …

Vespucci: A Free, Cross-Platform Software Tool For Spectroscopic Data Analysis And Imaging, Daniel Patrick Foose Jan 2016

Vespucci: A Free, Cross-Platform Software Tool For Spectroscopic Data Analysis And Imaging, Daniel Patrick Foose

Vespucci is a software application developed for imaging and analysis of hyperspectral datasets. Vespucci offers several advantages over other software packages, including a simple user interface, no cost, and less restrictive licensing. Vespucci incorporates several analysis techniques including univariate imaging, principal components analysis, partial-least-squares regression, vertex components analysis and k- means clustering. Additionally, Vespucci can perform a number of useful data-processing operations, including filtering, normalization, baseline correction, and background subtraction. Datasets that consist of spatial or temporal data with a corresponding digital signal, including spectroscopic images, mass spectrometric images, and X-ray diffraction data can be processed in this software. The …

A Chemical Free Approach For Increasing The Biochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (Sers)-Based Sensing Capabilities Of Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles, Kevin Michael Dorney Jan 2014

A Chemical Free Approach For Increasing The Biochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (Sers)-Based Sensing Capabilities Of Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles, Kevin Michael Dorney

The unique optoelectronic properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have led to their explosive use in a multitude of both research and industrial settings in recent years. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) exhibited by AgNPs has been exploited extensively as a nano-scale probe in a variety of spectroscopic detection modalities, particularly in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The SERS effect is highly dependent upon the LSPR interaction with optical laser frequencies, thus optimization of LSPR via specific control of AgNP dimensionality and composition of the surrounding medium is vital for increasing the efficacy of SERS-based nano-sensing. This work aimed to augment LSPR …

Near Single-Molecule Sers-Based Detection Using Ultrafiltered, Unfunctionalized Silver Nanoparticles, Joshua Dale Baker Jan 2012

Near Single-Molecule Sers-Based Detection Using Ultrafiltered, Unfunctionalized Silver Nanoparticles, Joshua Dale Baker

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are currently widely-used in consumer products, therapeutics, biomedical devices, and electronics. Yet, one application for which AgNPs have been used extensively is surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensing. However, AgNP size and aggregation state are known to greatly influence these applications. This works aimed 1) to synthesize a large volume of unfunctionalized, Creighton AgNPs, to characterize their chemical and physical properties, 2) then to size-select AgNPs of 1-50 nm and 50-100 nm in diameter and to concentrate them using a three-step, "green" tangential flow ultrafiltration (TFU) process. 3) Finally, to determine and compare the SERS-based sensing capabilities of …

Skeletal Pathology Of Tibiotarsi In Chick Embryos Exposed To Platinum Group Metals By Micro-Raman Spectroscopy, Jennifer L. Monahan Jan 2010

Skeletal Pathology Of Tibiotarsi In Chick Embryos Exposed To Platinum Group Metals By Micro-Raman Spectroscopy, Jennifer L. Monahan

Platinum group metals (PGMs) have been shown to accumulate in various tissues of organisms but their toxicity is not well-known. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique that enables direct and non-destructive chemical characterization of bone tissues. PGMs were injected into chick embryos in the following concentrations: 0.1, 1.0, 5.0, or 10.0 ppm solutions of Pt(IV), Rh(III), Pd(II) or PGMs mixtures (0.1 ppm or 1.0 ppm of each metal). The micro-Raman maps recorded on the paraffin embedded tibiotarsus cross-sections showed significant changes in the chemical composition and structure of the bone tissue as a result …
