Computational Study About Noncovalent Bonding Systems Involving Halogen, Chalcogen And Pnicogen Bonds, Jia Lu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

First terms used in this thesis are introduced and defined as follows. In the periodic table, the elements in the 17th column are named halogen including fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) and iodine (I). The elements in the 16th column are named chalcogen including oxygen (O), sulfur (S), selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te). The elements in the 15th column are named pnicogen including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb).

After hydrogen bonds (B-H⋅⋅⋅B) are well studied and understood by scientists and researchers, halogen bonds (R-X⋅⋅⋅B) have drawn attention due to the similarities in …

A Synthetic Biological Engineering Approach To Secretion- Based Recovery Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates And Other Cellular Products, Elisabeth Linton May 2010

A Synthetic Biological Engineering Approach To Secretion- Based Recovery Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates And Other Cellular Products, Elisabeth Linton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The costs associated with cellular product recovery commonly account for as much as 80% of the total production expense. As a specific example, significant recovery costs limit commercial use of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), which comprise a class of microbially-accumulated polyesters. PHAs are biodegradable compounds that are of interest as a sustainable alternative to petrochemically-derived plastics. Secretion-based recovery of PHAs was studied to decrease PHA production costs. Type I and II secretory pathways are commonly used for the translocation of recombinant proteins out of the cytoplasm of E. coli. Proteins were targeted for translocation using four signal peptides (HlyA, TorA, GeneIII, …

I. Studies Toward The Synthesis Of Echinodithianic Acid And Ii. The Temperature Dependent Nmr Spectrum Of Methyl N-Acetylsarcosinate, Alan Leroy Love

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Approaches to the preparation of echinodithianic acid (5) from 2,5-dicarbomethoxy-1,4-dithiane (1) were not successful, due to the inability to carboxylate or carboalkoxylate 1 at carbons 2 and 5. Studies toward the synthesis of 5 utilizing methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (8) have been investigated. The electrophilic addition of sulfur dichloride to 8 yielded bis-(2-acetamido-2-carbo-methoxyvin-1-yl) sulfide, while the addition of thiocyanogen chloride to 8 produced methyl 2-acetamido-3-thiocyanato-acrylate.

As electrophilic additions of unsymmetrical dipolar reagents to methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (8) are not reported in the literature, the addition of hydrogen bromide to 8 was studied to determine the orientation effect of the acetamido group.
