The interest in undergraduate research as a “touchstone” for the integration of research and education (Bauer & Bennett, 2003, p. 212) has led to a large number of programs and models supported by a variety of public and private sources (Seymour, Hunter, Laursen, & DeAntoni, 2004). Assessments have examined students’ progress toward advanced degrees, clarification of career path decisions, understanding of research-associated skills or attitudes, and access to research (Denofrio, Russell, Lopato, & Lu, 2007; Frantz, De Haan, Demetrikopoulos, & Carruth, 2006; Hunter, Laursen, & Seymour, 2006; Hurtado, Eagan, Cabrera, Lin, Park, & Lopez, 2008; Ishiyama, 2002; Lopatto, 2004; Russell, …

The "Teachers plus Occidental equals Partnership in Science" van program in Los Angeles CA was launched in June 1992. The program's goal is to improve high school biology and chemistry students' laboratory instruction by enhancing their teachers' knowledge and classroom application of modern instruments, techniques and experiments.

A High Yield Microscale Enzymatic Synthesis And Purification Of 14c‐Labeled Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate (Nadp+), Andre Ronneberg, Gordon Metz, Richard Weld, Peter Roffey, Chris Craney

Uniformly labeled (U) 14C nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+) was synthesized by phosphorylating [U-14C]nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) in the presence of immobilized NAD+ kinase. The 15 μCi (600 μL) synthesis consistently achieved yields between 80% and radiochemical purities greater than 95%. The [U-14C]NADP+ was purified by high performance anion-exchange chromatography using a gradient elution of ammonium bicarbonate. This procedure may be applicable to the synthesis of other charged, UV-absorbing products of enzyme-catalyzed reactions.

While the benefits of undergraduate research are well established, little attention has been paid toward involving community college students in such research. This paper describes a five-year-experience with a summer research program that includes Los Angeles area community college students working side-by-side with Occidental College students and faculty.

A Rapid Affinity Chromatography Procedure For The Isolation Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase From Human Erythrocytes, Chris Craney, M. Goffredo
A Rapid Affinity Chromatography Procedure For The Isolation Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase From Human Erythrocytes, Chris Craney, M. Goffredo
Chris L. Craney
The isolation of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase from outdated human erythrocytes (type AB+) utilizing NADP+ affinity chromatography and gel-permeation chromatography (Bio-Gel P-150) yields a fully active, homogeneous preparation. The procedure is faster and gives a higher yield than previous reports.
