Employee Attrition: Analyzing Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction Of Ibm Data Scientists, Graham Nash Apr 2023

Employee Attrition: Analyzing Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction Of Ibm Data Scientists, Graham Nash

Symposium of Student Scholars

Employee attrition is a relevant issue that every business employer must consider when gauging the effectiveness of their employees. Whether or not an employee chooses to leave their job can come from a multitude of factors. As a result, employers need to develop methods in which they can measure attrition by calculating the several qualities of their employees. Factors like their age, years with the company, which department they work in, their level of education, their job role, and even their marital status are all considered by employers to assist in predicting employee attrition. This project will be analyzing a …

Statistical Analysis Of The Relationship Between Protected Bird Species And National Parks, Katherine Harmon Apr 2023

Statistical Analysis Of The Relationship Between Protected Bird Species And National Parks, Katherine Harmon

Symposium of Student Scholars

The ecological diversity of Earth is majorly threatened by habitat loss due to the destruction by human intervention. The conservation status of all identified species are classified into nine categories of varying vulnerability as described by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. By understanding the vulnerability of specific species, scientists can work to maintain a viable and healthy ecosystem globally by instilling rules and regulations of observed habitats for threatened species. These habitats are identified by surveying potential locations for threatened species and determining the population size at each site. An example of one of these surveys …

The Effects Of Demographics And Risk Factors On The Morphological Characteristics Of Human Femoropopliteal Arteries, Sayed Ahmadreza Razian, Majid Jadidi, Alexey Kamenskiy

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Background: Disease of the lower extremity arteries (Peripheral Arterial Disease, PAD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. During disease development, the arteries adapt by changing their diameter, wall thickness, and residual deformations, but the effects of demographics and risk factors on this process are not clear.

Methods: Superficial femoral arteries from 736 subjects (505 male, 231 female, 12 to 99 years old, average age 51±17.8 years) and the associated demographic and risk factor variables were used to construct machine learning (ML) regression models that predicted morphological characteristics (diameter, wall thickness, and longitudinal opening angle resulting from the …

Team Coordination Dynamics Of Winning Nba Teams, Alli Grunkemeyer, Joel H. Sommerfeld

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Predicting sports games outcomes is an endless pursuit shared by stakeholders ranging from fans to coaches to data scientists. We have begun investigating the value of positional data recorded during basketball gameplay with the goal of predicting outcomes from team dynamics as they emerge. We approached this problem by analyzing the “shape” of team movements on the court and investigated whether team dynamics in NBA games mimicked long-range correlated patterns observed in other team contexts. We analyzed 622 NBA games from an archival data set, including all area time series obtained for each of the four quarters. We fit a …

The Relationship Of Delivery Method, Birth Weight And Race On Infant Mortality, Anjie Adeyemo Aug 2021

The Relationship Of Delivery Method, Birth Weight And Race On Infant Mortality, Anjie Adeyemo

Symposium of Student Scholars

Infant mortality is defined as the number of deaths per 1000 births. The U.S. infant mortality rate in 2014 was reported as 5.8 deaths per 1000 births which is very high compared to other countries such as Japan where the rate 2.1 deaths per 1000 births. The leading causes of infant death are congenital malformations, SIDS, low birthweight, pre-term births and maternal complications. For this project, I will analyze birthweight in addition to other factors related to infant death. My research aims to see how the factors of delivery method, birthweight, and race influence infant mortality to see how it …

Anti-Vaxxers: Parents Fighting Science, Katie West Aug 2021

Anti-Vaxxers: Parents Fighting Science, Katie West

Symposium of Student Scholars

Immunizing children helps protect the health of our community, especially those people who cannot be immunized. Yet, since 1996 after a study was released that linked autism to vaccinations, there has been a trend of parents refusing to vaccinate their children. What are the demographics of the parents who believe their children are better off without vaccines? By knowing where these parents live and what decisions they make for their children’s education, counties and medical professionals can provide education and address their concerns.

My research involves data on 116,141 kindergarten classes from 2000-2015 in California. The two vaccine exemption options …

Determining Malignancy: Can Mammogram Results Help Predict The Diagnosis Of Breast Tumors?, Taylor Behrens

Symposium of Student Scholars

Even with advancements in treatment and preventative care, breast cancer remains an epidemic claiming more than 40,000 American male and female lives each year. The mammogram dataset that I am analyzing was initially complied in the early 1990s by a team from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Past research diagnoses breast cancer from fine-needle aspirates. My research focuses on predicting whether we can determine breast cancer diagnoses without the use of invasive procedures and, in particular, whether we can predict breast cancer based on mammogram data. Do measures of gray-scale texture, radius, concavity, perimeter, compactness, area, and smoothness of …

Accidental Overdoses: Insights To Aid In Prevention, Annabel Nganga

Symposium of Student Scholars

Having lost a friend six years ago to an accidental cocaine overdose, I am very passionate about spreading awareness of accidental drug overdoses that have affected thousands of families countrywide. According to past research, deaths resulting from opiates specifically have been on the rise, and a significant number of deaths in the United States for those below fifty years are caused by drug overdoses. Data exists indicating which states have more overdoses. The data set I will be using includes variables on race, sex, age, drug with which person overdosed, location of the overdose, ultimate cause of death and year …

Community Level Physiological Profiling Of The Longleaf Pine Savannah Microbiome, Gavin Treadaway Aug 2021

Community Level Physiological Profiling Of The Longleaf Pine Savannah Microbiome, Gavin Treadaway

Symposium of Student Scholars

Soil microorganisms secrete chemicals into their surroundings, which the root system will uptake and in return release root exudates, which usually consist of low-molecular-weight organic compounds. These root exudates behave as signaling molecules and substrates for microorganisms to recruit beneficial soil bacteria to the plant root system, which will provide the plants with immunity to foliar diseases and pathogen infection. Studies have shown that bacteria on the root surface can protect aerial sections of the plant by promoting induced systemic resistance, a mechanism of increasing physical or chemical barriers of the plant.

The longleaf pine is an endangered species of …

Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook Apr 2021

Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are variations in the genome where one base pair can differ between individuals.1 SNPs occur throughout the genome and can correlate to a disease-state if they occur in a functional region of DNA.1According to the central dogma of molecular biology, any variation in the DNA sequence will have a direct effect on the RNA sequence and will potentially alter the identity or conformation of a protein product. A single RNA molecule, due to intramolecular base pairing, can acquire a plethora of 3-D conformations that are described by its structural ensemble. One SNP, rs12477830, which …

Asymptotic Simultaneous Estimations For Contrasts Of Quantiles, Lawrence Sethor Segbehoe, Frank Schaarschmidt, Gemechis Dilba Djira

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Although the expected value is popular, many researches in the health and social sciences involve skewed distributions and inferences concerning quantiles. Most standard multiple comparison procedures require the normality assumption. For example, few methods exist for comparing the medians of independent samples or quantiles of several distributions in general. To our knowledge, there is no general-purpose method for constructing simultaneous confidence intervals for multiple contrasts of quantiles. In this paper, we develop an asymptotic method for constructing such intervals and extend the idea to that of time-to-event data in survival analysis. Small-sample performance of the proposed method is assessed in …

A Novel Pathway-Based Distance Score Enhances Assessment Of Disease Heterogeneity In Gene Expression, Yunqing Liu, Xiting Yan Jan 2019

A Novel Pathway-Based Distance Score Enhances Assessment Of Disease Heterogeneity In Gene Expression, Yunqing Liu, Xiting Yan

Yale Day of Data

Distance-based unsupervised clustering of gene expression data is commonly used to identify heterogeneity in biologic samples. However, high noise levels in gene expression data and the relatively high correlation between genes are often encountered, so traditional distances such as Euclidean distance may not be effective at discriminating the biological differences between samples. In this study, we developed a novel computational method to assess the biological differences based on pathways by assuming that ontologically defined biological pathways in biologically similar samples have similar behavior. Application of this distance score results in more accurate, robust, and biologically meaningful clustering results in both …

Genome-Wide Analysis Of Alternative Rna Splicing In Children With Acute Myeloid Leukemia (Aml), Xichen Li Nov 2018

Genome-Wide Analysis Of Alternative Rna Splicing In Children With Acute Myeloid Leukemia (Aml), Xichen Li

Shared Knowledge Conference

The pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a high-risk and hard-to-treat childhood cancer that originates in the bone marrow from immature white blood cells. Recently, more and more evidence indicates that aberrant splicing of genes is a common characteristic for AML. Gene expression profiles have proved extremely useful for identifying genes that are associated with clinical characteristics and survival outcome of cancer patients. However, conventional gene expression profiles do not account for the differences observed in expressed isoforms when alternative RNA splicing is analyzed. Alternative RNA splicing can generate dozens of distinct transcripts from individual genes and the expressions of …

Analysis Of Ranked Gene Tree Probability Distributions Under The Coalescent Process For Detecting Anomaly Zones, Anastasiia Kim Nov 2018

Analysis Of Ranked Gene Tree Probability Distributions Under The Coalescent Process For Detecting Anomaly Zones, Anastasiia Kim

Shared Knowledge Conference

In phylogenetic studies, gene trees are used to reconstruct species tree. Under the multispecies coalescent model, gene trees topologies may differ from that of species trees. The incorrect gene tree topology (one that does not match the species tree) that is more probable than the correct one is termed anomalous gene tree (AGT). Species trees that can generate such AGTs are said to be in the anomaly zone (AZ). In this region, the method of choosing the most common gene tree as the estimate of the species tree will be inconsistent and will converge to an incorrect species tree when …

Mapping Morels: Predicting The Locations Of Morchella Species Through Environmental Factors Using The Gis System, Emily M. Stanevicius

Celebration of Learning

Morel mushrooms, Morechella esculenta and M. deliciosa, are known delicacies across the globe, ranging from exquisite dishes in French cuisine to Eastern palates such as Japanese Matsutake. According to literature, true morels diverged as their own genus about 129 million years, again which has led to the development of more than 177 species and have been part of the human diet since their beginning. However, the elusiveness of morels has contributed to the mushrooms infamy for rarity, and has even been known to sell for more than $40 per pound. This project seeks to aid in the search for morels …

Best Linear Unbiased Prediction: An Illustration Based On, But Not Limited To, Shelf Life Estimation, Maryna Ptukhina, Walter Stroup

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

Shelf life estimation procedures, following ICH guidelines, use multiple batch regression with fixed batch effects. This guidance specifically mandates estimates based on at least 3 batches. Technically, the fixed-batch model limits inference to the batches actually observed, whereas ICH requires resulting estimates to apply to all future batches stored under similar conditions. This creates a conflict between the model used and the inference space the model is intended to address. Quinlan, et al. (2013) and Schwenke (2010) studied the small sample behavior of this procedure. Both studies revealed large sampling variation associated with the ICH procedure, producing a substantial proportion …
