A thermosonde, an instrument that measures very high resolution temperature difference between two fine-wire platinum thermocouples, was attached to a weather balloon and lifted through the atmosphere, collecting observations of optical turbulence, in the spring of 2018 and 2019. The thermosonde collected raw temperature difference measurements, while an onboard Graw DFM-09 radiosonde observed standard meteorological parameters (temperature, air pressure, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, and altitude). The Graw meteorological observations are housed in the .txt files, while the raw radiosonde data (containing the raw, encoded thermosonde measurements) are housed in the .gsf files. The decoded voltage and temperature difference …

Blowing Snow At Mcmurdo Station, Antarctica During The Aware Field Campaign: Surface And Ceilometer Observations, Nicole A. Loeb, Aaron Kennedy Mar 2021

Blowing Snow At Mcmurdo Station, Antarctica During The Aware Field Campaign: Surface And Ceilometer Observations, Nicole A. Loeb, Aaron Kennedy

Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Blowing snow (BLSN) is an impactful process in cold climates, affecting regional thermodynamics, radiation properties, and the surface mass balance of snow. Though it has significant climatic impacts, the process is still poorly understood and not widely included in weather and climate models. In 2016, the AWARE Field Campaign saw the deployment of a large suite of in situ and remote sensing instruments to McMurdo Station, Antarctica allowing for investigation of BLSN. A ceilometer-based BLSN detection algorithm used elsewhere in Antarctica is applied to data from AWARE, yielding a BLSN frequency of 14.1% compared to 8.2% as detected by human …

Analysis Of Concurrent Backscatter Coefficients From In-Situ Cloud Probes And Airborne Lidar, Shawn Wagner, David J. Delene Jan 2020

Analysis Of Concurrent Backscatter Coefficients From In-Situ Cloud Probes And Airborne Lidar, Shawn Wagner, David J. Delene

Datasets

The North Dakota Citation Research Aircraft obtained measurements of anvil cirrus clouds over Florida during the summer of 2015 (CAPE2015). The Citation is fitted to take measurements of atmospheric variables (pressure, temperature, dew point, wind velocity, etc...) as well as cloud particle properties (concentration, size-distribution, water content, etc...). Data (at 1 Hz) is included from four flights occuring on 31 July 2015, 1 August 2015, and 2 August 2015. Cloud properties were measured by the Two-Dimensional Stereo probe (2D-S), the High-Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS3) probe and the Nevzorov probe. Additionally, particle data from the 2D-S and HVPS3 are combined to …

A Multi-Platform, In-Situ Kinematic And Microphysical Analysis Of A Parallel Stratiform-Mesoscale-Convective System, Andrea Neumann, Michael Poellet, David J. Delene, Mark Askelson, Kirk North, Mariko Oue Jan 2020

A Multi-Platform, In-Situ Kinematic And Microphysical Analysis Of A Parallel Stratiform-Mesoscale-Convective System, Andrea Neumann, Michael Poellet, David J. Delene, Mark Askelson, Kirk North, Mariko Oue

Datasets

The North Dakota Citation Research Aircraft obtained measurements of stratiform precipitation clouds within mesoscale convective systems over Oklahoma during the spring of 2011 (MC3E) in conjunction with a multitude of ground- and airborne-based remote sensing instruments. The Citation was used to take measurements of base atmospheric variables as well as cloud and precipitation properties. Cloud droplet properties were measured by the Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), Two-Dimensional Cloud probe (2D-C), the High-Volume Precipitation Spectrometer Version 3 (HVPS3) probe, with the spectra from these probes combined to create a single drop size distribution. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program ran three X-Band …

A Bulk-Mass-Modeling-Based Method For Retrieving Particulate Matter Pollution Using Caliop Observations, Travis D. Toth, Jianglong Zhang, Jeffrey S. Reid, Mark A. Vaughan Mar 2019

A Bulk-Mass-Modeling-Based Method For Retrieving Particulate Matter Pollution Using Caliop Observations, Travis D. Toth, Jianglong Zhang, Jeffrey S. Reid, Mark A. Vaughan

Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

In this proof-of-concept paper, we apply a bulk-mass-modeling method using observations from the NASA Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) instrument for retrieving particulate matter (PM) concentration over the contiguous United States (CONUS) over a 2-year period (2008–2009). Different from previous approaches that rely on empirical relationships between aerosol optical depth (AOD) and PM2.5 (PM with particle diameters less than 2.5 µm), for the first time, we derive PM2.5 concentrations, during both daytime and nighttime, from near-surface CALIOP aerosol extinction retrievals using bulk mass extinction coefficients and model-based hygroscopicity. Preliminary results from this 2-year study conducted over the CONUS show …

Characterizing The 2015 Indonesia Fire Event Using Modified Modis Aerosol Retrievals, Yingxi R. Shi, Robert C. Levy, Thomas F. Eck, Brad Fisher, Shana Mattoo, Lorraine A. Remer, Ilya Slutsker, Jianglong Zhang

Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

The Indonesian fire and smoke event of 2015 was an extreme episode that affected public health and caused severe economic and environmental damage. The MODIS Dark Target (DT) aerosol algorithm, developed for global applications, significantly underestimated regional aerosol optical depth (AOD) during this episode. The larger-than-global-averaged uncertainties in the DT product over this event were due to both an overly zealous set of masks that mistook heavy smoke plumes for clouds and/or inland water, and also an aerosol model developed for generic global aerosol conditions. Using Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Version 3 sky inversions of local AERONET stations, we created …

Bio-Fuel Alternatives In South African Airways (Saa) Operations - Is It An Effective Response To Vulnerability Over Carbon Taxes And Penalty?, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum

Aviation Faculty Publications

The paper did a comparative analysis of the carbon emission and European Union Emission Trading Surcharges (EU ETS) of South African Airways (SAA) current fleet that used aviation jet A1 fuel and the same fleet if it had used a 25% bio-fuel ‘drop in’ for the European routes within the first quarter of the 2014 flying year (FY 14). Operational data in terms of the flight scheduled, aircraft type, total time enroute, route stage length, passenger estimates were obtained through SAA’s flight operations website. An independent t–test was conducted to compare means of the emissions. The mean carbon dioxide …
