Extreme Hbl Behavior Of Markarian 501 During 2012, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Aims. We aim to characterize the multiwavelength emission from Markarian 501 (Mrk 501), quantify the energy-dependent variability, study the potential multiband correlations, and describe the temporal evolution of the broadband emission within leptonic theoretical scenarios.

Methods. We organized a multiwavelength campaign to take place between March and July of 2012. Excellent temporal coverage was obtained with more than 25 instruments, including the MAGIC, FACT and VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes, the instruments on board the Swift and Fermi spacecraft, and the telescopes operated by the GASP-WEBT collaboration.

Results. Mrk 501 showed a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray flux above 0.2 TeV of …

Gamma-Ray Observations Of Tycho's Supernova Remnant With Veritas And Fermi, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Feb 2017

Gamma-Ray Observations Of Tycho's Supernova Remnant With Veritas And Fermi, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

High-energy gamma-ray emission from supernova remnants (SNRs) has provided a unique perspective for studies of Galactic cosmic-ray acceleration. Tycho's SNR is a particularly good target because it is a young, type Ia SNR that has been well-studied over a wide range of energies and located in a relatively clean environment. Since the detection of gamma-ray emission from Tycho's SNR by VERITAS and Fermi-LAT, there have been several theoretical models proposed to explain its broadband emission and high-energy morphology. We report on an update to the gamma-ray measurements of Tycho's SNR with 147 hr of VERITAS and 84 months of Fermi-LAT …

Multiwavelength Study Of Quiescent States Of Mrk 421 With Unprecedented Hard X-Ray Coverage Provided By Nustar In 2013, P. T. Reynolds, Nustar, Veritas, Magic Mar 2016

Multiwavelength Study Of Quiescent States Of Mrk 421 With Unprecedented Hard X-Ray Coverage Provided By Nustar In 2013, P. T. Reynolds, Nustar, Veritas, Magic

Physical Sciences Publications

We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the bright, nearby BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 taken in 2013 January–March, involving GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, and other collaborations and instruments, providing data from radio to very high energy (VHE) γ-ray bands. NuSTAR yielded previously unattainable sensitivity in the 3–79 keV range, revealing that the spectrum softens when the source is dimmer until the X-ray spectral shape saturates into a steep ${\rm{\Gamma }}\approx 3$ power law, with no evidence for an exponential cutoff or additional hard components up to ~80 keV. For the first time, we observed both the synchrotron and …

Veritas Observations Of The Bl Lac Object Pg 1553+113, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We present results from VERITAS observations of the BL Lac object PG 1553+113 spanning the years 2010, 2011, and 2012. The time-averaged spectrum, measured between 160 and 560 GeV, is well described by a power law with a spectral index of 4.33 ± 0.09. The time-averaged integral flux above 200 GeV measured for this period was (1.69 ± 0.06) × 10–11 photons cm–2 s–1, corresponding to 6.9% of the Crab Nebula flux. We also present the combined γ-ray spectrum from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and VERITAS covering an energy range from 100 MeV to 560 …

Investigating Broadband Variability Of The Tev Blazar 1es 1959+650, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas

Physical Sciences Publications

We summarize broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar 1ES 1959+650, including optical R-band observations by the robotic telescopes Super-LOTIS and iTelescope, UV observations by Swift Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope, X-ray observations by the Swift X-ray Telescope, high-energy gamma-ray observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope, and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations by VERITAS above 315 GeV, all taken between 2012 April 17 and 2012 June 1 (MJD 56034 and 56079). The contemporaneous variability of the broadband spectral energy distribution is explored in the context of a simple synchrotron self Compton (SSC) model. In the SSC emission scenario, we find that the …

Observations Of The Unidentified Gamma-Ray Source Tev J2032+4130 By Veritas, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Mar 2014

Observations Of The Unidentified Gamma-Ray Source Tev J2032+4130 By Veritas, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

TeV J2032+4130 was the first unidentified source discovered at very high energies (VHEs; E > 100 GeV), with no obvious counterpart in any other wavelength. It is also the first extended source to be observed in VHE gamma rays. Following its discovery, intensive observational campaigns have been carried out in all wavelengths in order to understand the nature of the object, which have met with limited success. We report here on a deep observation of TeV J2032+4130 based on 48.2 hr of data taken from 2009 to 2012 by the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System experiment. The source is …

Discovery Of A New Tev Gamma-Ray Source: Ver J0521+211, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas

Physical Sciences Publications

We report the detection of a new TeV gamma-ray source, VER J0521+211, based on observations made with the VERITAS imaging atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope Array. These observations were motivated by the discovery of a cluster of >30 GeV photons in the first year of Fermi Large Area Telescope observations. VER J0521+211 is relatively bright at TeV energies, with a mean photon flux of (1.93 ± 0.13stat ± 0.78sys) × 10–11 cm–2 s–1 above 0.2 TeV during the period of the VERITAS observations. The source is strongly variable on a daily timescale across all wavebands, from optical to TeV, with a peak …

Rapid Tev Gamma-Ray Flaring Of Bl Lacertae, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas Jan 2013

Rapid Tev Gamma-Ray Flaring Of Bl Lacertae, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas

Physical Sciences Publications

We report on the detection of a very rapid TeV gamma-ray flare from BL Lacertae on 2011 June 28 with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). The flaring activity was observed during a 34.6 minute exposure, when the integral flux above 200 GeV reached (3.4 ± 0.6) × 10–6 photons m–2 s–1, roughly 125% of the Crab Nebula flux measured by VERITAS. The light curve indicates that the observations missed the rising phase of the flare but covered a significant portion of the decaying phase. The exponential decay time was determined to be 13 ± 4 minutes, …

Constraints On Cosmic Rays, Magnetic Fields, And Dark Matter From Gamma-Ray Observations Of The Coma Cluster Of Galaxies With Veritas And Fermi, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Oct 2012

Constraints On Cosmic Rays, Magnetic Fields, And Dark Matter From Gamma-Ray Observations Of The Coma Cluster Of Galaxies With Veritas And Fermi, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Observations of radio halos and relics in galaxy clusters indicate efficient electron acceleration. Protons should likewise be accelerated and, on account of weak energy losses, can accumulate, suggesting that clusters may also be sources of very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission. We report here on VHE gamma-ray observations of the Coma galaxy cluster with the VERITAS array of imaging Cerenkov telescopes, with complementing Fermi Large Area Telescope observations at GeV energies. No significant gamma-ray emission from the Coma Cluster was detected. Integral flux upper limits at the 99% confidence level were measured to be on the order …

Multiwavelength Observations Of The Agn 1es 0414+009 With Veritas, Fermi-Lat, Swift-Xrt, And Mdm, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We present observations of the BL Lac object 1ES 0414+009 in the >200 GeV gamma-ray band by the VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes. 1ES 0414+009 was observed by VERITAS between 2008 January and 2011 February, resulting in 56.2 hr of good quality pointed observations. These observations resulted in a detection of 822 events from the source corresponding to a statistical significance of 6.4 standard deviations (6.4σ) above the background. The source flux, showing no evidence for variability, is measured as (5.2 ± 1.1stat ± 2.6sys) × 10–12 photons cm–2 s–1 above 200 GeV, equivalent to approximately 2% of the Crab …

Discovery Of High-Energy And Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission From The Blazar Rbs 0413, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We report on the discovery of high-energy (HE; E > 0.1 GeV) and very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) γ-ray emission from the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object RBS 0413. VERITAS, a ground-based γ-ray observatory, detected VHE γ rays from RBS 0413 with a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations (σ) and a γ-ray flux of (1.5 ± 0.6stat ± 0.7syst) × 10–8 photons m–2 s–1 (~1% of the Crab Nebula flux) above 250 GeV. The observed spectrum can be described by a power law with a photon index of 3.18 ± 0.68stat ± 0.30syst. Contemporaneous observations with the Large Area …

Veritas Observations Of Gamma-Ray Bursts Detected By Swift, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Dec 2011

Veritas Observations Of Gamma-Ray Bursts Detected By Swift, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We present the results of 16 Swift-triggered Gamma-ray burst (GRB) follow-up observations taken with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) telescope array from 2007 January to 2009 June. The median energy threshold and response time of these observations were 260 GeV and 320 s, respectively. Observations had an average duration of 90 minutes. Each burst is analyzed independently in two modes: over the whole duration of the observations and again over a shorter timescale determined by the maximum VERITAS sensitivity to a burst with a t –1.5 time profile. This temporal model is characteristic of GRB afterglows …

Multiwavelength Observations Of The Very High Energy Blazar 1es 2344+514, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Sep 2011

Multiwavelength Observations Of The Very High Energy Blazar 1es 2344+514, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Multiwavelength observations of the high-frequency-peaked blazar 1ES 2344+514 were performed from 2007 October to 2008 January. The campaign represents the first contemporaneous data on the object at very high energy (VHE, E >100 GeV) γ-ray, X-ray, and UV energies. Observations with VERITAS in VHE γ-rays yield a strong detection of 20σ with 633 excess events in a total exposure of 18.1 hr live time. A strong VHE γ-ray flare on 2007 December 7 is measured at F(>300 GeV) = (6.76 ± 0.62) × 10–11 photons cm–2 s–1, corresponding to 48% of the Crab Nebula flux. Excluding this flaring episode, …

Spectral Energy Distribution Of Markarian 501: Quiescent State Versus Extreme Outburst, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas, Magic Mar 2011

Spectral Energy Distribution Of Markarian 501: Quiescent State Versus Extreme Outburst, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas, Magic

Physical Sciences Publications

The very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) has a well-studied history of extreme spectral variability and is an excellent laboratory for studying the physical processes within the jets of active galactic nuclei. However, there are few detailed multiwavelength studies of Mrk 501 during its quiescent state, due to its low luminosity. A short-term multiwavelength study of Mrk 501 was coordinated in 2009 March, focusing around a multi-day observation with the Suzaku X-ray satellite and including γ-ray data from VERITAS, MAGIC, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope with the goal of providing a well-sampled multiwavelength …

Multi-Wavelength Observations Of The Flaring Gamma-Ray Blazar 3c 66a In 2008 October, P. T. Reynolds, Fermi-Lat, Veritas, Gasp-Webt Jan 2011

Multi-Wavelength Observations Of The Flaring Gamma-Ray Blazar 3c 66a In 2008 October, P. T. Reynolds, Fermi-Lat, Veritas, Gasp-Webt

Physical Sciences Publications

The BL Lacertae object 3C 66A was detected in a flaring state by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and VERITAS in 2008 October. In addition to these gamma-ray observations, F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, PAIRITEL, MDM, ATOM, Swift, and Chandra provided radio to X-ray coverage. The available light curves show variability and, in particular, correlated flares are observed in the optical and Fermi-LAT gamma-ray band. The resulting spectral energy distribution can be well fitted using standard leptonic models with and without an external radiation field for inverse Compton scattering. It is found, however, that only the model with an external …

Veritas Search For Vhe Gamma-Ray Emission From Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Sep 2010

Veritas Search For Vhe Gamma-Ray Emission From Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Indirect dark matter searches with ground-based gamma-ray observatories provide an alternative for identifying the particle nature of dark matter that is complementary to that of direct search or accelerator production experiments. We present the results of observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Draco, Ursa Minor, Boötes 1, and Willman 1 conducted by the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). These galaxies are nearby dark matter dominated objects located at a typical distance of several tens of kiloparsecs for which there are good measurements of the dark matter density profile from stellar velocity measurements. Since the conventional astrophysical background …

Veritas 2008-2009 Monitoring Of The Variable Gamma-Ray Source M 87, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Jun 2010

Veritas 2008-2009 Monitoring Of The Variable Gamma-Ray Source M 87, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

M 87 is a nearby radio galaxy that is detected at energies ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma rays. Its proximity and its jet, misaligned from our line of sight, enable detailed morphological studies and extensive modeling at radio, optical, and X-ray energies. Flaring activity was observed at all energies, and multi-wavelength correlations would help clarify the origin of the VHE emission. In this paper, we describe a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the VERITAS VHE gamma-ray observations of M 87 in 2008 and 2009. In the 2008 observing season, VERITAS detected an excess with a …

Simultaneous Multiwavelength Observations Of Markarian 421 During Outburst, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas, Magic Sep 2009

Simultaneous Multiwavelength Observations Of Markarian 421 During Outburst, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas, Magic

Physical Sciences Publications

We report on the results of two coordinated multiwavelength campaigns that focused on the blazar Markarian 421 during its 2006 and 2008 outbursts. These campaigns obtained UV and X-ray data using the XMM-Newton satellite, while the gamma-ray data were obtained utilizing three imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes, the Whipple 10 m telescope and VERITAS, both based in Arizona, as well as the MAGIC telescope, based on La Palma in the Canary Islands. The coordinated effort between the gamma-ray groups allowed for truly simultaneous data in UV/X-ray/gamma-ray wavelengths during a significant portion of the XMM-Newton observations. This simultaneous coverage allowed for a …

Detection Of The Bl Lacertae Object H1426+428 At Tev Gamma-Ray Energies, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Jun 2009

Detection Of The Bl Lacertae Object H1426+428 At Tev Gamma-Ray Energies, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

A very high energy γ-ray signal has been detected at the 5.5 σ level from H1426+428, an X-ray-selected BL Lacertae object at a redshift of 0.129. The object was monitored from 1995 to 1998 with the Whipple 10 m imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescope as part of a general blazar survey; the results of these observations, although not statistically significant, were consistently positive. X-ray observations of H1426+428 during 1999 with the BeppoSAX instrument revealed that the peak of its synchrotron spectrum occurs at greater than 100 keV, leading to the prediction of observable TeV emission from this object. H1426+428 was monitored …

Veritas Observations Of The Bl Lac Object 1es 1218+304, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Apr 2009

Veritas Observations Of The Bl Lac Object 1es 1218+304, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

The VERITAS collaboration reports the detection of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object 1ES 1218+304 located at a redshift of z = 0.182. A gamma-ray signal was detected with a statistical significance of 10.4 standard deviations (10.4σ) for the observations taken during the first three months of 2007, confirming the discovery of this object made by the MAGIC collaboration. The photon spectrum between ~160 GeV and ~1.8 TeV is well described by a power law with an index of Γ = 3.08 ± 0.34stat ± 0.2sys. The integral flux is Φ(E>200GeV) = (12.2 ± 2.6) × …

Investigating The Tev Morphology Of Mgro J1908+06 With Veritas, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We report on deep observations of the extended TeV gamma-ray source MGRO J1908+06 made with the VERITAS very high energy gamma-ray observatory. Previously, the TeV emission has been attributed to the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) of the Fermi-LAT pulsar PSR J1907+0602. We detect MGRO J1908+06 at a significance level of 14 standard deviations (14σ) and measure a photon index of 2.20 ± 0.10stat ± 0.20sys. The TeV emission is extended, covering the region near PSR J1907+0602 and also extending toward SNR G40.5-0.5. When fitted with a two-dimensional Gaussian, the intrinsic extension has a standard deviation of σsrc = 0fdg44 ± …

Observation Of Gamma-Ray Emission From The Galaxy M87 Above 250 Gev With Veritas, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. May 2008

Observation Of Gamma-Ray Emission From The Galaxy M87 Above 250 Gev With Veritas, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

The multiwavelength observation of the nearby radio galaxy M87 provides a unique opportunity to study in detail processes occurring in active galactic nuclei from radio waves to TeV γ-rays. Here we report the detection of γ-ray emission above 250 GeV from M87 in spring 2007 with the VERITAS atmospheric Cerenkov telescope array and discuss its correlation with the X-ray emission. The γ-ray emission is measured to be pointlike with an intrinsic source radius less than 4.5'. The differential energy spectrum is fitted well by a power-law function: dΦ/dE = (7.4 ± 1.3stat ± 1.5sys)(E/TeV)(− 2.31 ± 0.17stat ± 0.2sys) 10−9 …

Very High Energy Observations Of Gamma-Ray Burst Locations With The Whipple Telescope, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Jan 2007

Very High Energy Observations Of Gamma-Ray Burst Locations With The Whipple Telescope, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE; E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope, and GRBs will continue to be high-priority targets as the next-generation observatory, VERITAS, comes online. Upper limits …

Multiwavelength Observations Of The Blazar Markarian 421 In 2002 December And 2003 January, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas Apr 2006

Multiwavelength Observations Of The Blazar Markarian 421 In 2002 December And 2003 January, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas

Physical Sciences Publications

We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV γ-ray blazar Mrk 421 performed during 2002 December and 2003 January. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV γ-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple γ-ray telescope. The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6 m; WIYN 0.9 m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV γ-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) bands. At TeV energies, the observations revealed several flares …

Constraints On The Very High Energy Emission From Bl Lacertae Objects, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Mar 2004

Constraints On The Very High Energy Emission From Bl Lacertae Objects, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We present results from observations of 29 BL Lacertae objects, taken with the Whipple Observatory 10 m gamma-ray telescope between 1995 and 2000. The observed objects are mostly at low redshift (z < 0.2), but observations of objects of up to z = 0.444 are also reported. Five of the objects are EGRET sources and two are unconfirmed TeV sources. Three of the confirmed sources of extragalactic TeV gamma rays were originally observed as part of this survey and have been reported elsewhere. No significant excesses are detected from any of the other objects observed, on timescales of days, months, or years. We report 99.9% confidence level flux upper limits for the objects for each observing season. The flux upper limits are typically 20% of the Crab flux, although for some sources, limits as sensitive as 6% of the Crab flux were derived. The results are consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton model predictions considered in this work.

Search For High-Energy Gamma Rays From An X-Ray-Selected Blazar Sample, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Dec 2003

Search For High-Energy Gamma Rays From An X-Ray-Selected Blazar Sample, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Our understanding of blazars has been greatly increased in recent years by extensive multiwavelength observations, particularly in the radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray regions. Over the past decade the Whipple 10 m telescope has contributed to this with the detection of five BL Lacertae objects at very high gamma-ray energies. The combination of multiwavelength data has shown that blazars follow a well-defined sequence in terms of their broadband spectral properties. Together with providing constraints on emission models, this information has yielded a means by which potential sources of TeV emission may be identified and predictions made as to their possible gamma-ray …

Search For Tev Emissions From Pulsars In Binary Systems, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Feb 2003

Search For Tev Emissions From Pulsars In Binary Systems, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

A survey of binary systems containing pulsars was conducted, with the intention of detecting Galactic sources of very high energy γ-ray emission. Observations were carried out with the Whipple 10 m imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescope. Standard analysis techniques were applied to these sources to search for steady, unpulsed emission. Periodic tests were also performed to search for emission correlated with both the orbital and spin phases, where appropriate. Analyses indicate that the binaries in this study do not emit detectable levels of very high energy photons within the sensitivity of our instrument. The flux upper limits presented here fail to …

The Tev Spectrum Of H1426+428, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

The BL Lac object H1426+428 was recently detected as a high-energy γ-ray source by the VERITAS collaboration (Horan et al.). We have reanalyzed the 2001 portion of the data used in the detection in order to examine the spectrum of H1426+428 above 250 GeV. We find that the time-averaged spectrum agrees with a power law of the shape

The statistical evidence from our data for emission above 2.5 TeV is 2.6 σ. At the 95% confidence level, the integral flux of H1426+428 above 2.5 TeV is larger than 3% of the corresponding flux from the Crab Nebula. The spectrum is …
