Creative Ecology: Art’S Role In Addressing Environmental And Sustainability Issues In Australia, Michael Meade
Creative Ecology: Art’S Role In Addressing Environmental And Sustainability Issues In Australia, Michael Meade
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Art has embodied the relationship between humans and the natural environment throughout the ages. As this relationship changed, many artists began to address concerns about the ways humans interact with nature. Today, more than ever, there is a need for channels of communication to address the major environmental and sustainability problems of our time. This study examines how art is influenced by environmental and sustainability concerns and the ways in which it responds to such concerns. By investigating how artists, community organizations, festivals and other initiatives encourage public awareness about environmental and sustainability issues, the study explores art’s role in …

Articles
This Inaugural Lecture consists of some of my rather mechanical, being an engineer, reflections on symmetry in diverse areas such as art, science, engineering, mathematics, etc. I explain what symmetry is to me, giving examples with lots of images and mentioning or at least barely referencing art, science, architecture, engineering, heritage, cosmology, bicycles, flight, invention, ingenuity, history, wallpaper, mathematics, typography, structures, regular shapes, coordinate systems, spacetime, thermodynamics and suchlike.

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss
Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss
Conference Papers
The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which detailed empirical analysis of the metrology and proportional systems used in the design of Irish ecclesiastical architecture can be analysed to provide historical information not otherwise available. Focussing on a relatively limited sample of window tracery designs as a case study, it will first set out to establish what, if any, systems were in use, and then what light these might shed on the background, training and work practices of the masons, and, by association, the patrons responsible for employing them.

Software Tools For Electronic Wind Instrument Performance, Bruno Degazio
Software Tools For Electronic Wind Instrument Performance, Bruno Degazio
Publications and Scholarship
Even though alternate musical controllers such as the Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI) significantly extend the expressive range of MIDI synthesizers and software virtual instruments, the computer-based editing and manipulation of data produced by these controllers has remained in an undeveloped state. A primary problem has to do with the binding of note data to expressive information such as breath controller and pitch bend data. MIDI, originally designed as a real-time performance protocol, has very weak binding of such data into higher-level musical structures; so weak in fact that even note endings are unconnected to their beginnings. The author describes a …

Searching For Binding Partners For The Novel Phkg1 Variant, Phkγ 181, Kishore Polireddy
Student Research Conference Select Presentations
Phopshorylase kinase (PhK) is a hexadecameric holoenzyme made up of four different subunits in the arrangement (αβγδ)4 and has total molecular mass of 1.3MDa. Alpha and β are regulatory subunits, γ is catalytic, and δ is an intrinsic molecule of calmodulin. PhK is a serine threonine kinase with glycogenolytic regulatory functions. Our lab has recently discovered that the γ subunit can be alternatively processed to produce a truncated form of 181 residues (γ-181). This variant of γ contains a phosphorylation site for PK-C, and its activity is influenced by this phosphorylation. We are using a LexA based yeast two hybrid …

Knowledge Management For Disparate Etruscan Cultural Heritage, John Mcauley, James Carswell
Knowledge Management For Disparate Etruscan Cultural Heritage, John Mcauley, James Carswell
Conference papers
This paper introduces the TARCHNA approach to managing and presenting contextualised heritage content. The system uses the CIDOC CRM ontology to consolidate a virtual repository of geographically disparate heritage databases and present a holistic view of a fragmented heritage. While previous approaches to presenting heritage collections have focused on the browse and search paradigm, the TARCHNA system uses narrative concepts as a means of presenting and re-using contextualised heritage artefacts within a broader cultural setting.
Anatomy Of An Arabetic Type Design, Saad D. Abulhab
Anatomy Of An Arabetic Type Design, Saad D. Abulhab
Publications and Research
Arabetic type design, like type design in general, should not be limited by rigid rules, other than those advocating open choice and user options. But as with all design fields, highlighting certain principles and guidelines is crucial to realizing a successful project. In an Arabetic font design environment, such guidelines and principles should reveal deeper understanding of various scripts visual and behavioral defining characteristics rather than mere traditional calligraphic and handwriting norms. A main goal of this study is to emphasize that designing Arabetic fonts is much easier than it is portrayed, and designers of all backgrounds should be more …
Historic Resource Study: Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Gail Evans-Hatch
Historic Resource Study: Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Gail Evans-Hatch
United States National Park Service: Publications
As steward of many of the United States' most important cultural and natural resources, the National Park Service (NPS) is required to create background documents along with specific plans aimed at managing and protecting these resources for the enjoyment of present and future generations. An important aspect of managing cultural landscapes requires knowing the past of those landscapes. A historic resource study (HRS) project involves researching and presenting the history of a park. A HRS also attempts to identify and evaluate the importance of all cultural resources within that park. Researching and presenting the broader historical context of a park …
The Philosophy Of Mathematics, Erin Wilding-Martin
The Philosophy Of Mathematics, Erin Wilding-Martin
Sabbaticals
The philosophy of mathematics considers what is behind the math that we do. What is mathematics? Is it some cosmic truth we discover, or is it created by humans? Do mathematical objects such as numbers and functions really exist, or are they just symbols we have invented? Two of the great debates in the history of mathematical philosophy center around ontology and epistemology. Where did mathematics come from? How do we know that it is true?
Where did mathematics come from? Is it discovered or created? Ontological questions are concerned with the nature and status of mathematical objects. Some people …
