First-Order Algorithms For Nonlinear Structured Optimization, Miao Zhang Apr 2023

First-Order Algorithms For Nonlinear Structured Optimization, Miao Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nonlinear optimization is a critical branch in applied mathematics and has attracted wide attention due to its popularity in practical applications. In this work, we present two methods which use first-order information to solve two typical classes of nonlinear structured optimization problems.

For a class of unconstrained nonconvex composite optimization problems where the objective is the sum of a smooth but possibly nonconvex function and a convex but possibly nonsmooth function, we propose a unified proximal gradient method with extrapolation, which provides unified treatment to convex and nonconvex problems. The method achieves the best-known convergence rate for first-order methods when …

Inexact Fixed-Point Proximity Algorithms For Nonsmooth Convex Optimization, Jin Ren Aug 2022

Inexact Fixed-Point Proximity Algorithms For Nonsmooth Convex Optimization, Jin Ren

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is to develop efficient inexact fixed-point proximity algorithms with convergence guaranteed for nonsmooth convex optimization problems encountered in data science. Nonsmooth convex optimization is one of the core methodologies in data science to acquire knowledge from real-world data and has wide applications in various fields, including signal/image processing, machine learning and distributed computing. In particular, in the context of image reconstruction, compressed sensing and sparse machine learning, either the objective functions or the constraints of the modeling optimization problems are nondifferentiable. Hence, traditional methods such as the gradient descent method and the Newton method are …

Directional Subdifferentials And Optimality Conditions, Ivan Ginchev, Boris S. Mordukhovich Aug 2011

Directional Subdifferentials And Optimality Conditions, Ivan Ginchev, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

This paper is devoted to the introduction and development of new dual-space constructions of generalized differentiation in variational analysis, which combine certain features of subdifferentials for nonsmooth functions (resp. normal cones to sets) and directional derivatives (resp. tangents). We derive some basic properties of these constructions and apply them to optimality conditions in problems of unconstrained and constrained optimization.

Suboptimality Conditions For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Truong Q. Bao, Panjak Gupta, Boris S. Mordukhovich Jul 2007

Suboptimality Conditions For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Truong Q. Bao, Panjak Gupta, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

In this paper we study mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPECs) described by generalized equations in the extended form 0 is an element of the set G(x,y) + Q(x,y), where both mappings G and Q are set-valued. Such models arise, in particular, from certain optimization-related problems governed by variational inequalities and first-order optimality conditions in nondifferentiable programming. We establish new weak and strong suboptimality conditions for the general MPEC problems under consideration in finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces that do not assume the existence of optimal solutions. This issue is particularly important for infinite-dimensional optimization problems, where the existence of optimal …

Charactarizations Of Linear Suboptimality For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich Jul 2006

Charactarizations Of Linear Suboptimality For Mathematical Programs With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to the study of a new notion of linear suboptimality in constrained mathematical programming. This concept is different from conventional notions of solutions to optimization-related problems, while seems to be natural and significant from the viewpoint of modern variational analysis and applications. In contrast to standard notions, it admits complete characterizations via appropriate constructions of generalized differentiation in nonconvex settings. In this paper we mainly focus on various classes of mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPECs), whose principal role has been well recognized in optimization theory and its applications. Based on robust generalized differential calculus, we …

Necessary Conditions In Nonsmooth Minimization Via Lower And Upper Subgradients, Boris S. Mordukhovich Dec 2003

Necessary Conditions In Nonsmooth Minimization Via Lower And Upper Subgradients, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns first-order necessary optimality conditions for problems of minimizing nonsmooth functions under various constraints in infinite-dimensional spaces. Based on advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differential calculus, we derive general results of two independent types called lower subdifferential and upper subdifferential optimality conditions. The former ones involve basic/limiting subgradients of cost functions, while the latter conditions are expressed via Frechetjregular upper subgradients in fairly general settings. All the upper subdifferential and major lower subdifferential optimality conditions obtained in the paper are new even in finite dimensions. We give applications of general optimality conditions to mathematical programs with …

Subdifferential And Superdifferential Optimality Conditions In Nonsmooth Minimization, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns first-order necessary optimality conditions for problems of minimizing nonsmooth functions under various constraints in infinite-dimensional spaces. Based on advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differential calculus, we derive general results of two independent types called subdifferential and superdifferential optimality conditions. The former ones involve basic/limiting subgradients of cost functions, while the latter conditions are expressed via Frechet superdifferentials provided that they are not empty. All the superdifferential and major subdifferential optimality conditions obtained in the paper are new even in finite dimensions. We give applications of general optimality conditions to mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints.
