Proposing A Measure Of Ethicality For Humans And Ai, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum Aug 2023

Proposing A Measure Of Ethicality For Humans And Ai, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Smarter people or intelligent machines are able to make more accurate inferences about their environment and other agents more efficiently than less intelligent agents. Formally: ‘Intelligence measures an agent’s ability to achieve goals in a wide range of environments.’ (Legg, 2008)

In this dissertation we extend this definition to include ethical behaviour and we will offer a mathematical formalism and a way to estimate how ethical an action is or will be, both for a human and for a computer, by calculating the expected values of random variables. Formally, we propose the following measure of ethicality, which is computable, or …

Mathematical Models Yield Insights Into Cnns: Applications In Natural Image Restoration And Population Genetics, Ryan Cecil Aug 2022

Mathematical Models Yield Insights Into Cnns: Applications In Natural Image Restoration And Population Genetics, Ryan Cecil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to a rise in computational power, machine learning (ML) methods have become the state-of-the-art in a variety of fields. Known to be black-box approaches, however, these methods are oftentimes not well understood. In this work, we utilize our understanding of model-based approaches to derive insights into Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In the field of Natural Image Restoration, we focus on the image denoising problem. Recent work have demonstrated the potential of mathematically motivated CNN architectures that learn both `geometric' and nonlinear higher order features and corresponding regularizers. We extend this work by showing that not only can geometric features …

A Computational Model Of Team-Based Dynamics In The Workplace: Assessing The Impact Of Incentive-Based Motivation On Productivity, Josef Di Pietrantonio May 2018

A Computational Model Of Team-Based Dynamics In The Workplace: Assessing The Impact Of Incentive-Based Motivation On Productivity, Josef Di Pietrantonio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Large organizations often divide workers into small teams for the completion of essential tasks. In an effort to maximize the number of tasks completed over time, it is common practice for organizations to hire workers with the highest level of education and experience. However, despite capable workers being hired, the ability of teams to complete tasks may suffer if the workers' individual motivational needs are not satisfied.

To explore the impact of incentive-based motivation on the success of team-based organizations, we developed an agent-based model that stochastically simulates the proficiency of 100 workers with varying abilities and motive profiles to …
