Investigating Anions And Hydrophobicity Of Deep Eutectic Solvents By Experiment And Computational Simulation, Amos Kwabena Dwamena

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Deep eutectic solvents are a new generation of ionic liquid-like solvents formed by combining hydrogen bond acceptor with hydrogen bond donor which result in the depression of the melting point of the solvent. Like ionic liquids, anions play a critical role in tuning the polarity, physicochemical properties, and thermodynamic behavior of deep eutectic solvent (DES). Choline chloride is the most widely used quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) in the literature and has remarkable advantages from reduced cost to low toxicity and volatility. Choline bromide and choline iodide are other QAS that have not been used often for DES synthesis and applications, …

Synthesis, Characterization And Molecular Dynamic Simulations Of Aqueous Choline Chloride Deep Eutectic Solvents, Sampson Asare

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various forms of deep eutectic solvents have been synthesized with advantages of 100% atom economy, low vapor pressure, ease of preparation, cost efficiency, low toxicity, and tunability. Though several DESs have been synthesized and characterized, including binary and ternary solvents, none of the binary DESs have been formulated with water as the sole hydrogen bond donor(HBD). This is due to a couple of opinions. First, water is disruptive to the eutectic bond in tertiary DES. Secondly, the ubiquity and concentration of water even in natural systems have led to the assertion that a solution rather than a eutectic solvent will …

Choline Chloride Eutectics: Low Temperature Applications, Kaila M. Kuehn, Camille M. Massmann, Natalie R. Sovell Jan 2017

Choline Chloride Eutectics: Low Temperature Applications, Kaila M. Kuehn, Camille M. Massmann, Natalie R. Sovell

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have a lower melting point than each of their individual components due to ion dipole interactions or hydrogen bonding. Traditionally, DES are used for processing metals through plating and have many synthesis applications. DES are able to be substituted for hazardous solvents that are traditionally used for metal plating and synthesis. This, along with many other advantageous properties, appear promising for the use of DESs as solvents or for use in electrochemical systems, particularly at low temperatures. Choline chloride:propylene glycol was a novel DES synthesized and analyzed for its properties, including melting point, viscosity, conductivity, heat …
