The present study compared superovulation and embryo recovery rates applied repeatedly during breeding and nonbreeding seasons in the same 20 Kivircik sheep. Trials 1 and 3 were performed during the breeding season and the trial 2 was performed in the nonbreeding season. We synchronized the sheep's estrus cycles and induced a superovulatory response with porcine follicle stimulating hormone (pFSH) injections. Natural mating took place 12 h after the last FSH injection. The embryos were collected by laparotomy 7 days after natural mating. There was no significant difference between the number of corpora lutea (CL) counted following the 1st (breeding) and …

The Influence Of Pomegranate-Peel Extracts On In Vitro Gas Production Kinetics Of Rumen Inoculum Of Sheep, Mohammad Javad Abarghuei, Yousef Rouzbehan, Abdel-Fattah Salem

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Different levels of pomegranate peel extracted by either water (PEH) or solvent mixture (PEM) were evaluated for their effect on in vitro gas production and ruminal fermentation patterns. Two levels of PEH or PEM (15 and 30 mg total phenolics (TP)/g DM of basal diet) were compared to a control (0) level. Ruminal fermentation parameters such as 24-h partitioning factor (PF_{24}), gas yield (GY_{24}), in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD), metabolizable energy (ME), and microbial protein (MP) were calculated. The addition of PEH or PEM had no effect (P > 0.05) on asymptotic gas production, apparent degraded substrate (ADS), IVOMD, ME, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The calpastatin (CAST) gene has a major effect on muscle growth and meat tenderness after slaughter; it is located on the fifth chromosome in sheep. Blood samples were collected from 720 animals in total from Kıvırcık (KIV), Sakız (SZ), Karacabey Merino (KM), and Gökçeada (GA) sheep populations raised in West Anatolia. The PCR products were digested by the restriction endonuclease MspI. Allele frequencies for M and N alleles of the gene were found to be 0.85 and 0.15 in KIV, 0.80 and 0.20 in KM, 0.99 and 0.01 in GA, and 0.34 and 0.66 in SZ sheep, respectively. It was …

Skeletal muscles (tongue, masseter, leg, intercostal, and diaphragmatic muscles) and brain samples of 100 sheep at slaughter were analysed for the presence of T. gondii tissue cysts along with serum IgG titres. Two methods of isolation by percoll gradient centrifugation and tissue microarray (TMA) technique with immunoperoxidase staining were used. Seropositivity was detected in 88% (88/100) of sheep sera analysed by indirect fluorescent antibody test. Tissue cysts were observed in 46 (52.3%, 46/88) and 15 (17%, 15/88) of the seropositive sheep with the isolation technique and TMA and immunoperoxidase staining, respectively. The diameters of the tissue cysts were 25–58 × …

The Effects Of Supplementing Diets Fed To Pregnant And Lactating Ewes With Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Dried Yeast, Katarzyna Zabek, Stanislaw Milewski, Roman Wójcik, Andrzej Krzysztof Siwicki

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of supplementing diets fed to ewes (in late pregnancy and during lactation or only during lactation) with Saccharomyces cerevisiae dried brewer’s yeast on the yield and chemical composition of milk and on selected parameters of humoral and cellular immunity. The investigated indicators were analyzed on days 28 and 70 of lactation. The addition of dried yeast contributed to a significant increase in milk yield, and the obtained milk was characterized by a lower somatic cell count, suggesting improved mammary gland health. Diet supplementation had a beneficial influence on the health …

Evaluation Of Ultrasonography As A Diagnostic Tool For Hepatic Hydatid Cysts In Sheep, Hussein Awad Hussein, Mohammed Elrashidy Jan 2014

Evaluation Of Ultrasonography As A Diagnostic Tool For Hepatic Hydatid Cysts In Sheep, Hussein Awad Hussein, Mohammed Elrashidy

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the use of ultrasonography for the diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts. This study was conducted on 22 sheep, which were classified into 2 groups according to their liver health group (healthy liver = 13 and cystic liver = 9). Biochemically, serum concentrations of gamma-glutamyl transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and globulins were significantly increased (P < 0.01) while albumin was lowered (P < 0.01) in sheep with cystic livers. Ultrasonographically, rounded, anechoic, and unilocular hydatid cysts with elliptical circumferences ranging from 6 to 10 cm were seen. The interiors of cysts contained echogenic particulate materials, septations, or fine echoes. At the 10th intercostal space (ICS), ventral margin, size, thickness, and angle of livers increased in sheep with hepatic cysts, while the diameter of portal vein decreased in sheep with liver cysts. At the 9th ICS, the circumference of the gall bladder was lowered in sheep with hepatic cysts (P < 0.01). The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of ultrasonography for diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts were 80%, 100%, and 100% and 83%, respectively. In conclusion, ultrasonography alone or in combination with some biochemical parameters reflecting liver function could be helpful for the diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts in sheep.

New Understanding Of An Old Phenomenon: Uncontrolled Factors And Misconceptions That Cast A Shadow Over Studies Of The ‘Male Effect’ On Reproduction In Small Ruminants, Trina Jorre De St Jorre, Penny Alison Rhian Hawken, Graeme Bruce Martin Jan 2014

New Understanding Of An Old Phenomenon: Uncontrolled Factors And Misconceptions That Cast A Shadow Over Studies Of The ‘Male Effect’ On Reproduction In Small Ruminants, Trina Jorre De St Jorre, Penny Alison Rhian Hawken, Graeme Bruce Martin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In female sheep and goats, exposure to males can be used to induce ovulation and thus control and synchronise fertility. This 'male effect' offers simple, cost-effective, and hormone-free management of reproduction in flocks and herds but, despite decades of research, significant gaps in our knowledge impede commercial application. Many of these gaps can be traced back to misconceptions in the early documentation of the male effect, and others are the result of uncontrolled factors in experimental design. Consequently, it is often difficult to draw conclusions from past research, to further our understanding of the phenomenon, and to make recommendations for …

Comparison Of Immune Responses During Gastrointestinal Helminth Self-Cure Expulsion Between Resistant Gulf Coast Native And Susceptible Suffolk Sheep, Javier Jesus Garza

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The immune response to the self-cure phenomenon seen during gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasitism of small ruminants was compared between sheep breeds that are resistant or susceptible to Haemonchus contortus infection. Fifty-four Gulf Coast Native (resistant) and Suffolk (susceptible) lambs were allowed to acquire a natural GIN infection on pasture and were then randomly allocated into 4 groups. After being moved to parasite free housing for 2 months, lambs were given a challenge infection of 20,000 H. contortus L3. Fecal egg counts (FEC) were monitored throughout the study and animals were necropsied at 0, 1, 3, and 7 days post infection …
