Infectious endocarditis (IE) is a heart valve or endocardial disease. Bartonella spp. are considered one of the causes of IE. The objective was to study the prevalence of canine IE in Bangkok, Thailand with an emphasis on Bartonella spp. infections. A review of the reports between January 1999 to December 2009 of 3,545 necropsied dogs was performed. Cardiac tissue blocks from 11 dogs were studied for the presence of eubacterial DNA and Bartonella spp. DNA by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and for Bartonella spp. DNA by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR).The prevalence of canine IE was 0.65%. The cardiac …

Cardiac tumors account for a small proportion of all canine tumors, but hemangiosarcoma represents the most frequent cardiac tumor in many species. Hemangiosarcoma occur intrapericardially with pericardial effusion. In this case report, a retrospective study was conducted on 9 cases of canine hemangiosarcoma. In all the dogs the presence of a pericardial exudate was noted and in 5 cases it was the only lesion detected during the examination. All animals were subjected to necropsy and histopathology was performed in the heart, spleen, liver, kidney, and lung. In 5 cases the tumor was present exclusively in the atrial wall. In 4 …

Clinical Presentation And Ultrasonographic Findings In Buffaloes With Congestive Heart Failure, Hussein Awad Hussein, Rudolf Staufenbiel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this retrospective study was to describe the clinical presentation and ultrasonographic findings in water buffaloes suffering from congestive heart failure. Fifty-three buffaloes with congestive heart failure, which was confirmed postmortem, were included. The final diagnoses were traumatic pericarditis (n = 38) and vegetative endocarditis (n = 15). Ten healthy buffaloes were enrolled in this study as controls. The main clinical presentations were those related to right-sided congestive heart failure including peripheral edema, venous distension and jugular pulsation, and a sharp drop in milk yield. Only 5 buffaloes exhibited signs of left-sided heart failure. Ultrasonographic examinations showed cardiac …
