Seroprevalence Of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis In Kuşadası, Turkey, Seray Özensoy Töz, Hati̇ce Ertabaklar, Yusuf Özbel, İ. Cüneyt Balcioğlu, Nevzat Yildizli, M. Zi̇ya Alkan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Human and canine visceral leishmaniasis cases have been reported from Kuşadası, a town in western Turkey, since 1993. In order to better understand the epidemiology of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CanVL) in the region, we aimed: (i) to determine the prevalence of CanVL in Kuşadası using a randomly selected dog population and (ii) to measure the effect of case control on the prevalence of the disease. In this study, all 109 dogs kept at the dog shelter of Kuşadası Municipality (reflecting random selectivity) were screened serologically using IFAT and rK39 ELISA in 1999. Ten dogs (9.1%) were seropositive or borderline in …

Determination Of Entrance Seasons Of Elvers (Anguilla Anguilla L.,1766) In Gözlen Creek And Assessment Of Different Catching Methods, Fahretti̇n Küçük, Erkan Gümüş, İskender Gülle Jan 2005

Determination Of Entrance Seasons Of Elvers (Anguilla Anguilla L.,1766) In Gözlen Creek And Assessment Of Different Catching Methods, Fahretti̇n Küçük, Erkan Gümüş, İskender Gülle

This study was carried out in Gözlen Creek, located on the Fethiye-Muğla boundary Turkey, between March to July, 1998, and January to July, 1999. Elvers were collected using trap-nets, drift nets, hand scoop nets and electrofishing equipment. Examination indicated that the highest yield was obtained using hand scoop nets (P < 0.05) and electrofishing equipment. Elvers entered Gözlen Creek between February and July. A total of 214 specimens entering the creek were examined and 3 different groups were established according to their morphological characteristics: average weight (W) group I; 0.166 ± 0.007 g, group II; 0.392 ± 0.02 g, group III; 0.800 ± 0.06 g and average total length (L) group I; 56.16 ± 0.06 mm; group II; 64.39 ± 0.11 mm and group III; 82.02 ± 0.18 mm. The length-weight relation of elvers was calculated using regression analysis and was determined as follows: group I; W = 0.0020*L^{2.5327}, group II; W = 0.0015*L^{2.9516}, and group III; W = 0.0023*L^{2.7090}. The condition factor (C) was determined as 0.209 ± 0.009 for group I; 0.154 ± 0.004 for group II and 0.251 ± 0.009 for group III.

This study aimed to evaluate clinical signs related with canine leishmaniosis (CanL) and to determine their relation with serological results in the differential diagnosis of this disease in dog populations. A total of 253 dogs from houses and a dog shelter in Kuşadası, an endemic region for leishmaniosis, were investigated for clinical signs related to CanL. Sera collected from the study group were examined by indirect fluorescence antibody (IFA), whole ELISA and rK39 ELISA tests for the serological diagnosis. Popliteal lymph node aspiration materials were examined for the parasitological diagnosis. Clinical signs were separated into two groups as cutaneous and …

Effects Of Deboning Methods On Chemical Composition And Some Properties Of Beef And Turkey Meat, Meltem Serdaroğlu, Gülen Turp Yildiz, Neri̇man Bağdatlioğlu Jan 2005

Effects Of Deboning Methods On Chemical Composition And Some Properties Of Beef And Turkey Meat, Meltem Serdaroğlu, Gülen Turp Yildiz, Neri̇man Bağdatlioğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this research was to compare some chemical and physical characteristics of mechanically deboned and hand deboned turkey meat and beef. Samples were analyzed for proximate composition, cholesterol, TBA, calcium and iron contents, hunter colour parameters and fatty acid composition. Deboning method affected chemical composition of beef and turkey meat. Mechanical deboning resulted higher cholesterol values and calcium and iron content. In hand deboned turkey meat the most abundant fatty acids were C16:0, C18:1 and C18:2. Mechanical deboning process was increased the percent of C18:1, C18:2 and C18:3 in turkey meat. C16:0, C18:0 and C18:1 were the major …

This study was performed to determine the presence of mite species on wild partridges in Elazığ district. For this purpose, a total of 68 partridges were caught in the 1996-2000 hunting seasons and inspected for the presence of mite species. At the end of the examinations 8 partridges were found to be infested by mites. Two different mite species were found on the infested partridges. These species were identified as Pseudolichus solutocurtus (Dubinin, 1956) and Harpyrhynchus sp. (Harpyrhynchidae Dubinin, 1957). In conclusion, 2 species of mites not reported before in the mite fauna of Turkey were found.
