Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Water buffalo milk, compared to cow's milk, has a preferable composition in terms of health and nutritional value. Subclinical mastitis, one of the most important problems of the dairy industry, is as important of an issue in water buffaloes as in cows. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of subclinical mastitis in buffaloes by metaanalysis, and to calculate the pooled prevalence. For the metaanalysis of the prevalence of subclinical mastitis in buffaloes, a total of 382 publications 294 from Scopus, 31 from Medline Complete, and 57 from ScienceDirect were obtained as a result of the literature …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Amongst ruminant livestock diseases, the gastrointestinal (GIT) helminths and protozoan parasite infections result in a significant socio-economic concern worldwide. During the period between October 2017 and November 2018, a total of 788 fresh fecal specimens from cattle (n = 303) and sheep (n = 485) were screened for the presence of gastrointestinal helminths and protozoan parasites in two historical regions (Crisana and Banat) of western Romania. Laboratory processing of fecal samples with the simple salt flotation (Willis) and sedimentation techniques, followed by microscopic analysis revealed that 86.1% of cattle and 92.6% of sheep were found to be positive for at …

Stray cats survive on their own and scavenge the surrounding areas for food to survive. Their exploitation to investigate the prevalence of ectoparasites can be of great medical importance for humans as they harbour a variety of zoonotic pathogens. Therefore, a survey of ectoparasites on stray cats was carried out from November 2017 to March 2018 around the Town of Knowledge to determine the prevalence of ectoparasites in stray cats and their potential to threaten the public health by infesting stray cats around Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. A total of 150 individuals of stray cats have been examined for …

minant brucellosis. The stochastic scenario tree model was used to simulate vaccination and surveillance implementation during 8 years. Outputs were annual proportions of true positive, true negative, false positive, and false negative flocks. Vaccination coverage was described by the Pert distribution with average 70% and min and max 50% and 80%, respectively. Effects of risk factors (high prevalence-areas and transhumance) were considered. The model was separately simulated for three levels of initial average flock prevalence (2%, 5%, and 10%). In the following years, flock prevalence arising from the fitted distribution of the false negative flocks from the previous year increased …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This cross-sectional study was conducted in and around Addis-Zemen from November 2014 to April 2015 to determine the prevalence of ovine coccidiosis and to identify associated risk factors. Faecal samples were collected directly from the rectum of 384 randomly selected animals. A centrifugal faecal flotation technique using saturated salt solution was used to detect Eimeria oocysts. Out of 384 samples, only 88 were found to contain Eimeria oocysts. Eimeria infection was recorded in all age and sex groups of the study animals. A strong significant association was observed (P < 0.05) between Eimeria infection and the faecal consistency, production system, hygienic status, age, and body condition of the sampled animals. However, an insignificant (P > 0.05) association was recorded between Eimeria infection and the origins and …

Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3- to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from 2005 to 2007. The reduction of brucellosis prevalence was statistically significant (P < 0.001) according to flock size. By species, brucellosis prevalence decreased 14.5-fold in sheep and 5.5-fold in goats in 2004. Regarding flock constitution, it decreased by 77% for pure flocks and 73% in mixed flocks in 2004. Regarding the animals involved in production, brucellosis prevalence decreased during the 7-year period. It was concluded that Rev-1 vaccination of the whole population was effective in decreasing brucellosis prevalence. These results contribute to the scarce information available regarding the effect of Rev-1 vaccination on different characteristics of flocks. They may be used to improve the efficiency of brucellosis eradication programs within livestock management.

Seventy-four animals were found infested (mean intensity 13.97, sample mean abundance 10.3, range of infestation 1-45) with an ischnoceran louse, Brueelia plocea. The frequency distribution pattern of the louse on the aforesaid bird was aggregated but did not conform to the negative binomial model. The sex ratio was female biased while the nymphal population was dominant over adults.
