Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3- to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from 2005 to 2007. The reduction of brucellosis prevalence was statistically significant (P < 0.001) according to flock size. By species, brucellosis prevalence decreased 14.5-fold in sheep and 5.5-fold in goats in 2004. Regarding flock constitution, it decreased by 77% for pure flocks and 73% in mixed flocks in 2004. Regarding the animals involved in production, brucellosis prevalence decreased during the 7-year period. It was concluded that Rev-1 vaccination of the whole population was effective in decreasing brucellosis prevalence. These results contribute to the scarce information available regarding the effect of Rev-1 vaccination on different characteristics of flocks. They may be used to improve the efficiency of brucellosis eradication programs within livestock management.

The objective of this study was to investigate the complementary effects of luteinizing hormone (LH) on cell subpopulations. Corpora lutea were collected on days 5 and 15 of the cycle. The luteal tissues were treated with collagenase for cell dissociation. Percoll density-gradient centrifugation was performed to separate cells into 2 distinct subpopulations. Luteal cells (5 × 104 cells/well) were cultured with and without 22(R)-hydroxycholesterol (22R-HC, 10 µg/mL) and LH (10 and 100 ng/mL) alone, and also with 22R-HC (10 µg/mL) plus LH (10 and 100 ng/mL), in a serum-free culture medium for 6 days of incubation. Untreated cells isolated from …

Screening For S32g Mutation Of Bmp15 Gene In 18 Goat Breeds, Tao Feng, Ming-Xing Chu, Gui-Ling Cao, Dong-Wei Huang, Ran Di, Qiu-Yue Liu, Zhang-Yuan Pan, Mei Jin, Ying-Jie Zhang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In our early work, one mutation (A898G, which caused Ser32Gly (S32G) change of mature peptide) was identified in the goat BMP15 gene and the allele G was associated with high litter size in Jining Grey goats (the goat breed with the highest fecundity in China). The aim of this research was to investigate the genetic structure of the prolific BMP15 gene in 18 goat breeds reared in China, including 12 native breeds, 3 introduced breeds, and 2 cultivated breeds. Genomic DNA of 1011 goats was screened for the S32G mutation. The results showed that this mutation existed in all 3 …

Polledness intersex syndrome (PIS) is a phenomenon associated with 2 distinct conditions occurring in goats, namely polledness and intersexuality. The first is a trait exhibiting complete dominance, whereas the latter is recessive. The extreme case of intersexualism is complete sex reversal, which is observed only in females (60,XX). The trait PIS is inherited in a recessive manner and caused by deletion of 11.7 kbp DNA on chromosome 1q43. Female goats with PIS exhibit a broad range of developmental abnormalities of the sexual system, from only subtle changes to complete sex reversal. The phenotypic diversity in goats with PIS is most …

New Understanding Of An Old Phenomenon: Uncontrolled Factors And Misconceptions That Cast A Shadow Over Studies Of The ‘Male Effect’ On Reproduction In Small Ruminants, Trina Jorre De St Jorre, Penny Alison Rhian Hawken, Graeme Bruce Martin

In female sheep and goats, exposure to males can be used to induce ovulation and thus control and synchronise fertility. This 'male effect' offers simple, cost-effective, and hormone-free management of reproduction in flocks and herds but, despite decades of research, significant gaps in our knowledge impede commercial application. Many of these gaps can be traced back to misconceptions in the early documentation of the male effect, and others are the result of uncontrolled factors in experimental design. Consequently, it is often difficult to draw conclusions from past research, to further our understanding of the phenomenon, and to make recommendations for …
