Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Lectins are substances composed of proteins or glycoproteins that specifically bond to carbohydrates on the cell surfaces or inside the cell. Lectins are used to identify the carbohydrate types in the cellular membrane or cytoplasm. The aim of the study was to identify the location and distribution of the four types of lectins PNA (Peanut agglutinin- Arachis hypogea), WGA (Wheatgerm Agglutinin- Triticum vulgaris), Con A (Conconavalin A-Canavalia ensiformis), and SBA (Soybean Agglutinin-Glycine max) in dog testes and epididymites. The testes and the body of 10 adult dogs were collected from an animal shelter after castration. Following the standard histological procedures, …

Determination Of Acrylamide Using The Immuno-Enzymatic Method In Commercial Dog And Cat Foods, Ni̇met Kiliç, Bi̇lal Cem Li̇man

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pet animals raised by humans do not have the chance to choose their own food. Therefore, mistakes made by humans in feeding dogs and cats will adversely affect the health of the animal. There are applications at high temperatures at various stages during the production of dog and cat foods. It is predicted that acrylamide (AA) can be formed as a result of a possible Maillard reaction since the cat and dog foods contain starch in its structure. The aim of this study is to determine the AA residue immuno-enzymatically in dry cat and dog feeds from different companies available …

Canine cranial cruciate ligament ruptures have become common with improved nutrition and nonselective breeding strategies. This study assessed 7 dogs of various breeds and ages with the diagnosis of cranial cruciate ligament ruptures. The triple tibial osteotomy (TTO) method was used to treat the rupture. All of the dogs were admitted to the clinic for varying degrees of lameness. Diagnosis was confirmed using both clinical and radiologic examinations. Body weights of the dogs were between 12 and 65 kg. Informed consent was given by the owners prior to surgery. Postoperatively, early evaluations were made using periodic radiographs and clinical examinations, …

An 11-year-old intact female chow chow dog was presented for evaluation of intermittent vomiting and anorexia for a month. On ultrasonographic examination, gastric pylorus hypertrophy which compressed common bile duct was identified. The gallbladder was significantly enlarged and mucocele was suspected. Cholecystectomy and gastric full thickness biopsy were performed and gastric adenocarcinoma was diagnosed by histopathological examination. Billroth II gastrojejunostomy using thoracoabdominal-stapler (TAstapler) was performed. On surgery, hypertrophied tissue suspected of tumour was also found adjacent to the major duodenal papilla. After surgery, vomiting disappeared, and the patient regained appetite. On postoperative day 90, the patient was presented vomiting and …

A male mixed breed street dog (age unknown) presented with an ocular mass and multiple ulcerated subcutaneous nodules on both hind limbs which bled easily when touched. Inspection of the genital organs revealed that no masses were present. The ocular mass and nodules were diagnosed as a transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) by fine-needle aspiration cytology. The total remission of the tumor was achieved after 5 applications of vincristine sulfate. The dog was adopted during the remission period, but 5 months after adoption he developed neurological signs and died. The necropsy revealed a mass located in the trunk of the corpus …

This study investigated whether abdominal ultrasonography, a frequently used examination method in clinics and hospitals, causes stress in dogs. For the study, 10 healthy dogs were used. Following general examination, intravenous catheters were placed in the V. cephalica accecorius of the dogs and blood specimens were collected to obtain serum and plasma samples (minute 0). After a 30- min break, ultrasonography was applied following shaving of the abdominal region. Serum and plasma samples were collected from the intravenous catheters at the 5th, 15th, and 20th minutes of the ultrasonographic examination during which the urinary bladder, left kidney, spleen, stomach, liver, …

In Vitro Investigation Of Netosis Reaction Developing From Dog Polymorphonuclearneutrophils To Toxoplasma Gondii, Güneş Karakurt, Kader Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Toxoplasma gondii is known to develop extracellular traps from neutrophils in some animal species such as mice, cattle, sheep, cats, and donkeys. This study aimed to investigate the extracellular trap structures formed in dog polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) to T. gondii tachyzoites in vitro. Dog PMN was isolated using Percoll dilutions (45%, 54%, 63%, and 72%). After incubation with tachyzoites, the extracellular traps originating from the dog PMNs were observed in the extracellular areas. Histones (H3), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and neutrophil elastase (NE), the characteristic features of NETosis reaction, were detected in extracellular areas. The tachyzoites were observed between the extracellular trap …

Cyanoacrylate Tissue Adhesive For The Management Of Corneal Perforation In Dogs:A Report Of Three Cases, Je-Hwan Jang, Joon Young Kim

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Corneal perforation can cause profound vision loss and requires immediate treatment. Bandage contact lens insertion and gluing are temporary treatment methods. However, if the patient cannot undergo surgery for a variety of reasons, these methods are inevitably used as permanent treatment methods. The use of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (CTA) for the management of corneal perforation in humans has been reported for several decades. Here we describe, for the first time as per our knowledge, the use of CTA (Vetbond) for the management of corneal perforation with a diameter of

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of autologous neurogenically induced bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (NIBM-MSCs) in two dogs suspected to have fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy (FCEM). Both dogs were paraplegic without deep pain perception (DPP) and tentatively diagnosed by MRI. Autologous NIBM-MSCs (5 × 106) were transplanted into the lumbar subarachnoid space two times with a 21-day interval for each patient. Based on a 21-month follow-up of the treated animals, the transplantation of NIBM-MSCs seems to be promising in subjects with FCEM lacking DPP.
