Myostatin, along with its binding protein follistatin, have been demonstrated to inhibit skeletal muscle development during embryonic and postnatal development, whereas IGF-1 has been reported to stimulate skeletal muscle development and overall growth. The objectives of the current study were to determine the expression profiles of myostatin and follistatin genes, and to evaluate the impact of in ovo administration of recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-1 (rhIGF-1) on these gene expression patterns during quail embryogenesis, with an emphasis on skeletal muscle development. Quail eggs were injected once with 100 ng rhIGF-1 in 10 mM acetic acid, 0.1% BSA per embryo on …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of stuffed mussel as a source of Listeria monocytogenes. Polymerase chain reaction is a rapid procedure with both sensitivity and specificity for quick detection and identification of L. monocytogenes. A total of 50 mussel samples were investigated for L. monocytogenes. L. monocytogenes was not identified by the conventional method. However, PCR amplification products demonstrated that 5 out of 50 samples showed positive reactions with L. monocytogenes. The PCR positive samples showed specific amplification at approximately 343 bp for L. monocytogenes.

Identification Of Vibrio Anguillarum By Pcr (Rpon Gene) Associated With Vibriosis In Marine Fish In Turkey, Di̇dem Demi̇rcan, Akin Candan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The main causative agent of vibriosis is Vibrio anguillarum. In this study, 33 V. anguillarum strains were isolated from the internal organs of marine fish showing typical clinical signs of vibriosis, and these strains were identified by biochemical tests. For comparison of these results, API 20E and BIONOR Mono-Va agglutination kits were used. Finally strains were amplified by PCR using the rpoN gene. Although the phenotypic properties of V. anguillarum strains varied, the rpoN gene from chromosomal DNA was amplified in all strains. In conclusion, this gene could be used in the diagnosis of V. anguillarum strains isolated in Turkey.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Shrimps with an initial weight of 11.10 ± 0.26 g were fed diets supplemented with 6.6% red pepper (RP), 2.4% marigold flower (MF), and 100 mg/kg synthetic astaxanthin (SA), each of which contained 100 mg/kg total carotenoid, and a control diet (BD), without carotenoid supplement for 60 days. Dietary carotenoid sources did not significantly affect the growth of the shrimps (P > 0.05). SA supplementation yielded the highest survival rate (92%), followed by RP (82%) and the other diets (75%) (P < 0.05). All dietary carotenoid sources provided higher carotenoid accumulation compared to the control group (P < 0.05), but the difference between them was not significant (P > 0.05). RP and SA resulted in a greater protein increase in shrimp muscle than MF (P < 0.05); however, lipid, ash, and water content were similar in all diet groups (P > 0.05).

We investigated the effect of ATP-MgCl_2 on myocardial hemodynamics and metabolism. The study included 12 mongrel dogs that were randomly divided into 2 groups: the control and the ATP-MgCl_2 (study) groups. Following a right thoracotomy, the left anterior descending artery was ligated for 15 min and then reperfusion was performed. After the ischemic period, cardiopulmonary bypass was initiated and the aorta was cross-clamped. ATP-MgCl_2 (70+70 mmol/l) 0.25 ml/kg per h was given to the study group at the start of the ischemic period. Hemodynamic and metabolic measurements were obtained at basal, and then after 60, 120, and 180 min of …

The aim of the present study was to perform a controlled experiment in order to evaluate the predisposing role of Eimeria adenoeides invasion on the appearance, development and severity of a Salmonella Enteritidis infection, with both infectious agents being field isolates obtained from spontaneous cases of the disease. Furthermore, we aimed to examine the principal epidemiological parameters of the mixed infection. The effect of an experimental Eimeria adenoeides invasion upon an artificial S. Enteritidis infection was studied in 160 turkey poults. The birds were divided into 4 experimental groups. Group 1 was infected with Eimeria adenoeides. Group 2 was infected …
