Optimization Of Feline Adipose-Derived Multipotent Stromal Cell Isolation And Canine Cranial Cruciate Ligament Regeneration With Intra-Articular Adipose-Derived Multipotent Stromal Cells, Nan Zhang Jan 2013

Optimization Of Feline Adipose-Derived Multipotent Stromal Cell Isolation And Canine Cranial Cruciate Ligament Regeneration With Intra-Articular Adipose-Derived Multipotent Stromal Cells, Nan Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Adult multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) have become popular within veterinary sciences for direct administration and tissue regeneration due to their differentiation, trophic and immunosuppressive properties. However, current isolation and expansion techniques provide a heterogeneous population with other types of cells, which may affect the efficiency and efficacy of treatments. The progenitor properties and function need to be further evaluated in vitro prior to in vivo application. The first part of this dissertation was to identify the optimal MSC source for general canine orthopedic applications such as intra-articular injection and joint tissue regeneration. Based on side-by-side comparisons of cell doublings, colony …

Role Of Nod2/Rip2 Signaling In Acute Bacterial Pneumonia And Sepsis, Balamayooran Theivanthiran Jan 2013

Role Of Nod2/Rip2 Signaling In Acute Bacterial Pneumonia And Sepsis, Balamayooran Theivanthiran

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bacterial pneumonia and sepsis are two important causes of mortality in the world. Emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria has necessitated the development of new treatment and/or prevention strategies to augment host immune defense. In this context, the innate host defense is critical in clearing pathogenic bacteria from the host. Early neutrophil recruitment is a critical step in a multistep requence leading to bacterial clearance. Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) play a critical role in the innate immune system. Receptor interacting protein 2 (RIP-2) is an adaptor for the nod-like receptors (NLR) NOD1 and NOD2. Nucleotide oligomerisation domain 2 (NOD2) is an …

Copper Oxide Wire Particles Used To Control Haemonchus Infections : Efficacy In Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis) At Busch Gardens Tampa And Potential Mechanism Of Action, Allyson Kinney Moscona Jan 2013

Copper Oxide Wire Particles Used To Control Haemonchus Infections : Efficacy In Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis) At Busch Gardens Tampa And Potential Mechanism Of Action, Allyson Kinney Moscona

LSU Master's Theses

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections affect production systems and exotic hoofstock in zoos, particularly giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis). Anthelmintic resistance (AR) prevalence is increasing in production systems and zoos. To combat the AR that compounds GIN problems, alternative control methods are used. One such alternative is copper oxide wire particles (COWP), which control the abomasal nematode Haemonchus contortus. COWP was given to seven adult giraffe at Busch Gardens Tampa, at descending dosages: 25 g, 12.5 g, 6.3 g. Treatment administration time was determined by fecal egg count (FEC) being above 600 eggs per gram (EPG), and therefore varied with each animal. FEC …

Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai Jan 2013

Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are obligate intracellular bacteria that are carried by ticks. One such tick, Dermacentor variabilis is a vector for the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, R. rickettsii. These ticks also carry a non-pathogenic R. montanensis, the agent used in this study. Interestingly, field data collected from infected D. variabilis throughout the United States revealed that the majority of Rickettsia in ticks are non-pathogenic species such as R. montanensis. Although ticks serve as both vector and reservoir hosts for SFG Rickettsia, many questions regarding tick-Rickettsia interaction remain unresolved. Therefore, the overall goal of this research …

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein Gm And The Membrane Associated Protein Ul11 Are Required For Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Efficient Virus Entry, In Joong Kim Jan 2013

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein Gm And The Membrane Associated Protein Ul11 Are Required For Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Efficient Virus Entry, In Joong Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

HSV-1 facilitates virus entry into cells and cell-to-cell spread by mediating fusion of the viral envelope with cellular membranes and fusion of adjacent cellular membranes. Although virus strains isolated from herpetic lesions cause limited cell fusion in cell culture, clinical herpetic lesions typically contain large syncytia, underscoring the importance of cell-to-cell fusion in virus spread in infected tissues. Certain mutations in gB, gK, UL20 and other viral genes, drastically enhance virus-induced cell fusion in vitro and in vivo. Recent work has suggested that gB is the sole fusogenic glycoprotein, which is regulated by interactions with viral glycoproteins gD, gH/gL, gK, …

Characterization, Prevalence, And Risk Factors Of Spontaneous And Experimental Atherosclerosis And Vascular Imaging In Psittaciformes, Hugues Beaufrère Jan 2013

Characterization, Prevalence, And Risk Factors Of Spontaneous And Experimental Atherosclerosis And Vascular Imaging In Psittaciformes, Hugues Beaufrère

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative and inflammatory vascular disease characterized by the accumulation of inflammatory cells, lipids, calcium, and formation of large fibrofatty lesions within the intima of arteries resulting in the disorganization of the arterial wall and stenosis of the lumen. Despite the importance of atherosclerosis in psittacine cardiology, there are few pathologic, clinical, and experimental investigations in psittaciformes. In order to expand the knowledge on psittacine atherosclerosis and provide fundamental observational information for future research, a series of studies was conducted on psittaciformes: 1) psittacine atherosclerotic lesions were characterized and categorized based on histopathology, histochemistry, transmission (TEM), and scanning …

Epidemiology And Molecular Characterization Of Human And Canine Hookworm, Ntombi B. Mudenda Jan 2013

Epidemiology And Molecular Characterization Of Human And Canine Hookworm, Ntombi B. Mudenda

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Among the soil-transmitted helminths (STH), hookworms are a worldwide problem in both humans and animals. They cause non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms, and in young children and animals, they can cause stunting, malnutrition and anemia. Canine hookworms have significant zoonotic potential as a cause of cutaneous larvae migrans and eosinophilic enteritis in humans. To determine the ecological niche of human hookworm in Brazil, two risk models were developed based on the Growing Degree Day-Water Budget (GDD-WB) concept, one based on accumulation of monthly temperatures above a base temperature of 15oC and threshold WB value >0.4. The second was based on a ‘gradient …

Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall Jan 2013

Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall

LSU Master's Theses

Unilateral arytenoid lateralization is a commonly performed surgical treatment for laryngeal paralysis in dogs. It involves fixing the moveable arytenoid cartilage to the thyroid (TAL) or cricoid (CAL) cartilage or both (CTAL). This increases the area of the rima glottidis (RGA), to allow reduced airway pressure and laryngeal resistance in vitro and ameliorates clinical signs in vivo. It may also increase the patient’s predisposition for aspiration pneumonia, which occurs in around 20% of clinical patients. No surgical technique has been correlated with clinical outcome or risk of aspiration pneumonia. Objective analysis of the effects of surgery on the three dimensional …
